September 1 is the anniversary of Nazi Germany invading Poland in 1939 and the start of World War II. In the midst of this terrible war — the most deadly in history — the Nazis and their collaborators perpetrated the industrialized, mass murder of 6 million Jewish people. What we rarely consider is that a considerable number of Jews caught up in this genocide were Jews who believed that Jesus is the Messiah of Israel. Christ Church Jerusalem has commissioned a project to rediscover the names and stories of our brothers and sisters in Messiah who were murdered by the Nazis. CMJ historian Kelvin Crombie has been researching what the Nazis classified as “non-Aryan Christians” for two years.the Jewish Believers Holocaust Project. Concurrently, we have been digitizing glass slide photographs taken by the Jewish Christian community in Poland and Ukraine before and during the war. The slides are housed in the Conrad Schick Library on the Christ Church compound. Here is a peek into Poland and Ukraine just before the war. Photo 1: Congregational picnic somewhere in Poland Photo 2: Mr. and Mrs. Weisman and son, somewhere in Poland. Photo 3: Miss West’s Bible class in Lviv, Ukraine, c. 1938. Today we remember the wedding anniversary of Stanley Cliff and Helen Stewart, married on Jan. 6, 1944. We found this photo in the U.S. Library of Congress collection. CC volunteer Ruth L. connected with a granddaughter, Toni P., who sketched out her spunky grandparents, "both very strong individuals who knew what they wanted." Stanley and Helen met in England sometime near the beginning of World War II. Stanley, who served in the Royal Air Force as a navigator and musician, was stationed was stationed in the Middle East (including in Iraq in 1945) and traveled to Jerusalem on leave and with the RAF band. Helen was in the Women's Auxiliary Territorial Services. The family thinks Helen managed to get herself posted in the Middle East, as well. "She was a great one for sorting things out the way she wanted them!" explained Toni. The couple managed to coordinate time in Jerusalem to get married at Christ Church. Helen told her granddaughter once "that she went AWOL with a couple of her friends to get married" but Toni is not sure "if that is correct or an exciting tale for a granddaughter." Stan had been a teacher before the war. Afterward, the family moved to Rhodesia (present-day Zimbabwe) where Stan returned to teaching. After several years, the family moved back to England, where Stan rejoined the RAF as a civilian teacher. This new job with the Royal Air Force allowed the Cliff family to heed their "itchy feet." The family lived in Rhodesia, England, Cyprus, Singapore, and New Zealand, where they finally settled. Toni said Stan and Helen "made wonderful, interesting grandparents with so many stories to tell!" #jerusalem #mandatorypalestine #wedding #raf #royalairforce #britishhistory #WorldWarII #womensauxiliary https://www.instagram.com/p/BsTM0QEhZxR/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=16y8mv1ylpzpr
Post card showing the American Consulate when it was inside the Jaffa Gate (c. 1857) as well as the Tower of David and Christ Church on the left behind the U.S. flag. Ruth Kark's book American Consuls in the Holy Land, 1832-1914 states that this picture was drawn by an American traveler and cites a report in the U.S. National Archives by U.S. Consul Frank de Hass on April 28, 1877. Rev, Jacob Jocz was a Polish Jewish Christian. He was pastor to many other Jewish believers in Jesus before and after World War II. His story is one of thousands of Jewish followers of Jesus in 20th century Europe, some of which survived, but most of which were murdered by the Nazis without discrimination. We remember. We will never forget.

This is a photo of Rev. William Henry Hechler and his family. On 10 March 1896 Hechler met Theodore Herzl for the first time. From our friends at On this Day in On This Day In Messianic Jewish History: "Reverend William Henry Hechler (10 January 1845 – 31 January 1931) was a Restorationist Anglican clergyman, eschatological writer, crusader against anti-Semitism, promoter of Zionism, aide, counsellor, friend and advocate of Theodor Herzl as he developed his vision and plans for the return of the Jewish people to the Land. He was “not only the first, but the most constant and the most indefatigable of Herzl’s followers”, according to Paul Merkely. – The Politics of Christian Zionism 1891-1948. R. Steven Notley founded Shoresh Study Tours in 1986 on the Christ Church property. He's seen here leading a tour near what is now the Davidson Archaeological Park in Jerusalem. This month, Shoresh Study Tours celebrates 30 years of guiding Christians through the Holy Land with an emphasis on the Biblical Jewish roots of the faith and the historical Jewish context into which Jesus was born and ministered in. This image is an artist's rendering of the foundations of Christ Church Jerusalem, which were laid 10 February 1840 by Rev. John Nicholayson andarchitect William Curry Hillier. "On February 10th, 1840, the church was commenced on the old foundation of a high wall built on the solid rock of Zion, and by the end of March the building was raised to the first story. Shortly afterward, the work was interrupted by the death of Mr. Hillier, the surveyor and architect, who had recently been sent from London to conduct the building operations: whilst hostilities between the European Powers and the Viceroy of Egypt compelled the British Consul, and almost all the mission staff, to quit Jerusalem on September 8th, Nicolayson and his family only remaining." Three architects worked on the church, the first, William Curry Hillier, died in 1840 of typhus, while the second James Wood Johns, was dismissed and replaced by Matthew Habershon in 1843.
