You know that essay, "Everyone is Beautiful and No One is Horny"? Arcane is like the antidote to that.
If you are unfamiliar, the essay basically talks about how in superhero movies in particular, but also culture at large, actors are more sculpted and perfect than ever. But in a sanitized way. Everyone is the platonic ideal of hot, but no one is down bad for each other, no one gets dirty, it's all entirely sexless. (And the essay goes off in a few directions that I think are a bit of a stretch, but I agree with the overall point.)
The character design in Arcane is so effectively *hot* precisely because of the imperfections, the flaws. That's what ends up making them interesting to look at, it gives them some grit that's easy to latch onto.
Yes, a lot of the characters fit traditional beauty standards to some degree, but they also have asymmetries. They have harsh edges. They have little scars or tooth gaps. Caitlyn's hair is a little thin. Jayce’s mouth is a little small. Vi has a bump in her nose. Even Mel, her eyebrows are not on fleek, but it's that unusual little imperfection that's precisely one of the most beautiful things about her.
And then on top of that you just get the sense that Fortiche knows exactly how to animate and film the characters in a way that revels in their physicality.
Animation is all about capturing physicality, almost to the point of caricature. You have to exaggerate weight and movement in animation for it to be believable; rotoscoping feels floaty. And Fortiche does *something*, I can't put my finger on what, that highlights the hotness of their characters.
I think one other way that the medium lends itself to, "wow this show is full of hot characters," is the idea of recognizable silhouettes. It's a general principal in animation that you want all your characters to have distinct silhouettes from each other (Steven Universe is actually a really good example of this). The result of that in Arcane is that you have all these different body types represented, who are hot in different ways. It's not just cookiecutter hot people as you get in live action with actors trying to fit into narrow beauty standards. It's all those differences that add yet another layer of texture.
So I went on a bit of a ramble, but what I'm trying to explain here is: why this blog? There is not a shortage of shows starring hot people. What is it about Arcane that compelled me to make a blog all about acknowledging how hot the characters are? There's something kind of special about design on this show.

the amount of maintenance being alive requires.. i got nothing against eating but 3x a day, every day? couple hours max until you feel hunger coming back? the same teethbrushing routine every morning and night forever? showering doesn't last more than a day? give me a break
To kiss every line and scar etched on his face
To trace a finger down the recesses with light touches
To stare into his eyes and see the man, not the marks
I really hate to side with Gollum on this, but “what’s in my pocket” is not a riddle and should not have counted.
Yes, but you see, he should have disputed it as soon as it was asked. By trying to answer, he made it legal.

The fact this isn't a painting is a testament to one of the greatest feats of set design and production I've ever seen.
My god just look at this! The lighting, set design, photography... I've just never seen anything like it.
I think this is the first time I've ever been wowed by "this ISN'T a painting"!
Ok I looked it up because I didn’t believe it was a painting, and it really is a photograph. It looks like that because it’s from 1966. Here it is on The New York Public Library’s digital collection:

and here are some more photos from it
Fixed it.
John Oliver gets it, as usual. AI Slop is one of the best episodes of Last Week Tonight I've seen so far. Gen AI is theft. Those who use it are not authors or artists, they're grifters profiting from real creatives.
This should be required viewing for anyone defending AI as "helping normal people create art".

Unpopular (with clients) opinion, but if you "rescued" a dog 7 years ago, haven't gotten it any shots, and haven't taken it to the vet since even when it injured an eye a year ago and you're only taking it now because it's itching and the scratching is keeping you awake, then you didn't rescue that dog.
It’s so funny seeing non-science people write scientist characters. specifically when arcane fans write Jayce and Viktor and they’re in the lab just talking about “solving equations.” exquisite.
yo who up solving they equation
In the lab, straight up “solving it.” And by “it” I mean. Haha, well. let’s justr say. My equation
