Let me tell you something about young, angry, military men. They are in a culture of violence, and many of us got tattoo's, especially of skulls. The cooler the better.

I'm not attributing a good reason for a bad tattoo, but not everyone knows the meaning behind every tattoo. I would suggest looking at the Russian mob tattoo's or the Yakuza. I knew a ton about the Nazi's and fascism when I was in the service, but I had no idea what this particular tattoo meant until I was twenty years older.

I know a lot of people are complaining about it and now complaining about how he covered it with another tattoo from another culture. He could have covered it with flowers and you'd be mad about that too, especially if those flowers were done in the Japanese style. Some people would likely associate that with war era Japan.

Have you never been young? Have you never made a mistake? Are you serious? Or are you someone who simply wants Collins to win because you didn't get your favored candidate? Or maybe you're a republican operative trying to piss off all the young people into skipping the vote? I am not sure which many people are anymore, but if I had the choice between Platner and Collins, I'd choose Platner for the time being. There is another election in six years. Which of these two people isn't part of a political party trying to destroy the nation?

I think this is a good post, and I hope you get a lot of good responses. I am worried that many people who may feel inclined to answer, won’t. I think many people, and I’m speaking at least for myself and any Jews who share my mindset, may be hesitant to reply to this because they don’t know if they fit your criteria.

I consider myself pro-Palestine. I’m sure you know this from talking to me for so long. However, many people at least in the west like to tell Jews what we are and are not. They call us Zionists when we are not. They tell us that we can’t be both pro Israel and pro Palestine when we feel very “pro” about both peoples.

I’m pro-Palestinian welfare and sovereignty. I’m not anti-Palestinian statehood. But I also support Israeli statehood and Jewish people living safely in a self governed area of the Levant which includes our temples and ancient places. Despite this, as you know, I’m not a Zionist for many personal reasons but I’m also not anti-Zionist. I’m simply non-Zionist. I don’t know where that falls in the category of people you’re hoping to hear from though.

Also, just for clarity, are you asking WHY people who aren’t Muslim aren’t Muslim? Or are you asking that only non-Muslims reply?

I originally wasn’t going to say anything myself— but I follow Eden and I’ve really enjoyed reading both of your conversations even though I’ve never really interacted. It fills me with hope and pride in both of you. And what Eden wrote above, about not knowing if I have the place to say something, rang true for me. But then I am hoping that maybe, in answering, I can provide something good too.

First off, I’m not an expert. I’m Jewish because my Jewish identity is what I am more than anything else. I’m a Jew before I’m an American, before I’m a woman, before I’m anything. To me, being Jewish is as real as the fact that I have a heart that beats and lungs that need oxygen— it’s a fact. I have an immense respect for Muslims, and I would add my voice to others who responded to your post with the sense that we are cousins. And while I take a hard stance against Islamophobia, while I want Palestinians to have self determination and autonomy, protection and support, I struggle to say that I’m pro-Palestine.

And this again is where I admit I’m not an expert. My (relative) distant in the diaspora frees me from a lot of the immediate reality of things— except for the second hand experiences of my friends and family in Israel, who have suffered at the hands of radical Islam. I could say a lot of things about why I don’t fully align with the pro-Palestine movement; the largest of which being its association with rampant antisemitism and violence.

But here is also where I’ll freely admit something, despite the shame, and I hope you will look and see it with the lens of understanding. I have read about the things you and your family suffered, and continue to deal with, and it fills me with pain and compassion. But also I think of the pain and suffering of my family. I think of violence and terrorist attacks, and cruelty. I think of hostages and captives, those brutally murdered, those returned missing pieces of themselves, those we still don’t know if they’ll return at all. It makes me angry, it makes me scared, it makes me grieve with a bone deep grief that feels as real as a broken rib. Selfishly, or perhaps more generously, in a very human way, I struggle with the idea of finding peace with people who inflicted such harm. That’s not to say I don’t want peace— I *do*, desperately. I wish my soul was unburdened by grief and anger, I wish I didn’t hold the hate it’s learned the past 18 months as the world seemed to turn its back on my family and friends.

In Judaism, we often use the term “am yisrael”— a concept of the jewish people. It’s a term that makes us family. Religiously, we celebrate (and commemorate) our past in the present. We still mourn the destruction of the temple and our exile like it was yesterday. What this means for me is that everything is immediate, and so even without personally knowing any of the hostages, it feels as real to me as if they were my sibling, my parent, my grandparent. I know their names and their faces and I miss them, despite not having met them. What this is to say is that I’m very human. I can’t fully give my heart to a cause that doesn’t stand for my family as well. If I only have so much energy, I’m going to give it to my family first. If I speak up, I speak up for them first.

In that same vein, I feel from what I’ve read from you that you feel the same way about your family, your friends, your people. And that’s where I have to believe that hope is found. I love my family more than I hate our enemies— and you are NOT my enemy. I don’t know if I articulated myself as well as I’d like— that’s what I get for trying to tackle a tricky subject that I doubt my own authority to speak on. But I hope if you have questions, or concerns, that you’ll reach out. Reaching out is the only way we’ll get through this. Thanks for listening, and for reaching out in the first place.

I get what you mean too. And what your Jewish identity to you is what my Palestinian identity is to me. Being Palestinian (while it technically shouldn't come before being Muslim) to me it does. Because i live in Lebanon now which has a highly sensitive political situation, me being Palestinian is a "big thing". I hold the Jordanian citizenship and i have a the Jordanian passport as well as UN papers stating that i am Palestinian and that I have a right to specific plots of land in Yaffa and in Nablus that belonged to both my grandparents. I cannot change who i am just like you cannot change who you are

I said this before I'll say it again, while i deeply appreciate non-Arabs and specifically none Palestinians for fighting for us. And i send you lots of love. I want people to listen to us. Most of the time Palestinian voices and over shadowed with the more popular non- Arab voices who seem to think they know exactly how we feel and how we want to act. That's not true. We are complex human being with complex feelings and a very complex and detailed understanding of what's happening around us. We, as children, I'm taking Palestinian Lebanese and Jordanian children, are very hyper-aware of the world around us and what's happening in it because it's our truth. Having went to school in Jordan where i think over 90% of the people are Palestinian refugees including me, we are very aware of what's happening around us. I have never been outside the Middle East unless you count a week of Italy where i literally sat in the hotel for 3 days (TWICE THIS HAPPENED TWICE BECAUSE I TWISTED MY LEG BOTH FREAKING TIMES) but that's a story for another time. So i really do not have ANY non-Arab experiences. So belive me when i tell you, people who have legit never set foot in the Middle East have nothing on us.

I'm sorry about what happened to your family, no civilian should have to go through that, and i firmly believe that.

I have seen hell on earth, from when i was flung into a building because a bomb without warning to the time i had drive past children with missing limbs. I cannot bring myself to wish that in anyone. And while i hate to admit it, there is a part of me deep deep down that simply cannot forgive. I do not forgive people who stood for this, who funded it and excused it. Not when I've seen it with my own eyes. Not when I've touched it and experienced it. So i do understand how your feeling, especially about your family. I hate when i left Lebanon the last month of the war and it might sound genuinely psychotic to you but i was crying to my dad every single day to send me back. Why? My grandfather was there and he refused to leave because he wanted his workers in his store to still have a job. He didn't want to close up even with the war happening and barely anyone buying anything. I couldn't leave him, and i use to face time him upwards of 3 hours a day. I understand how you feel about your family.

I was really scared to share this perspective. It’s hard to speak from a place of (relative) privilege and share real grief that exists in tandem, but not competition with, others. My experiences as a Jew in diaspora are different than the experiences of an Israeli Jew— and that’s different than an Israeli Muslim, or a Palestinian in Palestine or a Palestinian in diaspora. Sometimes it feels like my voice doesn’t *have* a place in a conversation so much bigger than me. Like, I don’t know if you saw my tags, but I work at a zoo. I teach people about birds, and caring for the environment, and how to think about the world through a scientific lens.

I’ll tell you a story, and I hope it makes sense. But a while ago I was working with two of our snakes. People are scared of snakes, even though they’re important to the environment. I had a mom and her young daughter come up, and when I tell you that mom was *terrified* I’m not overstating things. Her face was pale, she couldn’t even look at it for more than a few seconds at a time. And yet she coached her daughter how to approach, how to touch the snake, and cheered her on for doing it. That mom told me wanted her daughter to grow up without the fear and disgust she felt about snakes. And I know it sounds like a tumblr story— but I have things like that happen *regularly* at work. People overcoming fear, or hiding fear for the sake of their kids growing up without it. I can’t change my fear or my anger, but I can make sure I don’t pass it on.

I’ll tell you another story. We have school groups come in frequently, including some local Muslim schools. I always pay attention when they come in, because I live in a place where people are not always as kind as they should be, so I try to be on the lookout and make sure these kids have a good visit. This actually happened the day we learned what happened to Shiri, Ariel, and Kfir. It was, to date, one of the roughest days emotionally I have ever worked. So when the opportunity came up to do a ladybug release (where kids help me distribute ladybugs throughout our greenhouse) I jumped at the opportunity for something simple and uplifting. And I walked out into a crowd of one of those school groups. I was having a rough day, I was raw and vulnerable and more than a little willing to be hasty in judgment and defensive over my Magen David necklace and hostage release pin, but my snap reactions during a time of grief are not who I am. So I put on my best smile and did a ladybug release. I worked with those kids— learning their names and their stories— for an hour and a half (this program is supposed to be 15-20 minutes). I engaged with their teachers. And with every smile, every laugh at tickling insect legs, or assisting with getting ladybugs out of shirt collars and hair, I felt better. At one point, one of the teachers said something in Arabic, I don’t know what but I recognized the word Yehud, and for a moment I was frightened. Not because I had real reason, but because it’s always scary to hear yourself mentioned in another language. And in my experience, nothing good usually comes out of being called “Jew” instead of my name. But when I peeked over, he was looking at another teacher and smiling. I believe, I have to believe, it was a kind thing, because the teacher had kind eyes and a kind smile. I don’t like to look at every single interaction between Jews and Muslims like it’s supposed to be some sort of mythical metaphor for the Middle East. I’m just a girl talking to school kids about bugs, you know? But this one time— this one time. I felt like maybe I was making a difference. I’ve thought about that group frequently— how much I liked them. How much I *want* it to be some metaphor for a better world.

I cannot even begin to imagine the things you’ve seen and survived. I can’t begin to possibly understand how it changed you and the way you see the world. And in some ways, I don’t need to. Because I believe you, because I don’t need to understand you perfectly to care about you. I will never be able to fully agree with your interpretation of Zionism— not because I think you’re wrong for your perspective, I think it makes absolutely perfect sense— but because in the very same vein you probably can’t understand MY interpretation of Zionism— again not because I’m wrong, but because I’m analyzing it through a completely different set of experiences. Both of our understandings are very much real, and I do genuinely believe that they’re both equally correct even if that seems in conflict.

I also can empathize with your desire to go back, even though it’s not logical, even though it’s awful and scary. Your loved ones are there. How could you ever want to not be there with them? Sometimes, sick as it is, I wish I was there myself— a soldier, or even someone in danger— because I almost feel like maybe it would be doing SOMETHING more than me sitting in my perfectly safe home with my pets and my wonderful job. It’s not rational, but it’s born out of a desire to be there and offer love. I don’t think it’s a strange feeling at all. And, for what it’s worth? I’m glad you’re in a safer place. I can only pray that safety comes to us all in time.

I want to listen to you. I want to hear your voice, and the voices of other Palestinians, in the same way I think you wanted to hear mine. Because you’re a person, not a government or an organization. You’re someone I could walk down the street with and share a coffee. You’re someone I could hug.

My headcanon, therefore, is that the Mirkwood Elves now have a local legend about a ghost haunting Thranduil’s palace, never seen but generally thought to be harmless. Thranduil scoffs at the idea, but has been seen glancing around at the dark corners of rooms. Legolas fully believes in it and is known to say hello out loud when he enters an empty room, in case the ghost is nearby.

It’s not until Legolas joins the Fellowship that he figures out that the supposed ghost was actually an invisible Bilbo the whole time. He never tells Thranduil, because he thinks it’s funny to see his regal father unnerved by the idea of a ghost.

franz kafka’s writings are often analyzed in a trans lens the person who wrote that was almost definitely a trans person who related. people who call kafka a trans woman are almost entirely trans women. there is also a huge subset of literature shitposter girls who use kafka and the metamorphosis specifically to talk about their experiences with womanhood. so while i agree that the trope you are talking about is antisemitic i don’t think that applies here. he’s not being called a woman in a disparaging way.

Franz Kafka was a real person who died not too long ago, and just because a trans person relates to his writings doesn't mean they can claim he's trans. It's not the same as relating to a fictional character. You can't 'headcanon' an actual person. I don't care how much you relate- he wasn't trans, don't call him a woman. He was an actual person, not a fictional character you can project on. An treating Franz Kafka like a fictional character you can project any label onto and separate him from his actual life is dehumanization and *also* antisemitic.

It's no different than queer people co-opting Anne Frank's memory and erasing her story to just herald her as a "bi icon" when she never had the chance to live long enough to label herself. Queer gentiles need to stop dehumanizing Jewish people and turning them into blank slates they can project onto.

Kafka's Metamorphosis and writings about his depression are from the viewpoint of a disabled Jewish man who was watching as antisemitism was slowly escalating around him and Jews were becoming insects in the minds of society. And "he's not being called a woman in a disparaging way" is the dumbest excuse ever- antisemitism is antisemitism. I've seen trans people infantilize Jewish men, calling them "different breed of man" or "scrunkly" and then insist they meant it positively. Intent doesn't matter. Calling a Jewish man, who never ever indicated having any gender identity otherwise, a woman, or implying he's somehow not a full man, is antisemitic.

At some point relatively recently, people seem to have come to the conclusion that you can't empathize with a character (or real fucking person, in this case, and I cannot stress how gross that is) unless you're just like them. "Oh, I, a nonbinary person can identify with this cishet man? He must actually be nonbinary!" "Oh, I, an autistic person, can identify with this Ambiguously Quirky™ person? She must actually be autistic!"

Being able to relate to a person--real or fictional--who isn't just like you is a good thing. It's good that you see yourself in the writings of a cisgender man! Maybe it will teach you that cis people aren't the enemy. It's good that an autistic character resonates with NT people! Maybe they'll gain new insight into their autistic friends and family!

It's called empathy, and it's so important to understand that you are going to see your experiences reflected in people who are unlike you. Those connections are important. Deciding that Kafka must be a trans woman because you're a trans woman is missing the entire fucking point. It means that you do, in fact, have some things in common with a cisgender man, and conversely, it means that cisgender men have things in common with you. To flatten them out so they're just like you is missing out on so much of what they have to say.

People are beautiful and rich and layered and the fact that we can connect with other people and share experiences despite how different we are? That's the whole fucking point. That's what makes life worth living.

OP, I'm sorry I only spoke on being transgender and autistic. Those are the only two points that I could speak on from experience. Talking about real people like they're fictional pisses me off, and I sort of... got off on a thing.

I'm not OP, but one thing that's frightening about this from a Jewish perspective (especially in the context of discussing someone who was alive in the interwar period) is the recurring idea that Jews only matter as lenses for other people's stories. That we can be empathized with, but only if our narratives can be twisted to someone else's.

Because we've seen that before. We see it very often because it's a fundamental premise of some incredibly antisemitic forms of Christianity, and when it turns out that we're real people with real opinions and real beliefs and real feelings who don't just exist to validate someone else's perception of who and how we could be, people don't just abandon their pretense at allyship, they get violent.

It's also a common failing in how the Holocaust is taught. People like to present this lens of "it was random violence that came out of nowhere and could've happened to anyone. It could've happened to you! Imagine if you'd been one of the victims! That would've been a tragedy wouldn't it?" And the thing is, that's bullshit. If you were just a random German citizen at the time? You would've been one of the perpetrators. And it was a tragedy in and of itself; it doesn't become a tragedy by imaging a scenario in which people who were perfectly safe would've actually been potentially in danger (never killed, of course, because Holocaust education is also commonly sanitized, which is a different rant).

Well. I'm a cis woman. GNC, perhaps, but cis. And I get misgendered (and degendered) a lot because of how people read Jewish features. And... when friends insist that any discomfort I have with feminine stuff is because I'm an egg... I get that they're trying to be helpful for a journey of self-discovery. But I've done that introspection. I check in with myself periodically just in case. And "oh, you're really nonbinary/a trans man because you're [insert list of stereotypically Jewish features//personality traits commonly ascribed to Jews [whether or not I have them]" -it hurts. Because not only are they minimizing my actual identity and my self-knowledge, and deciding that they're the experts on my life, rather than me, they're doing it in a way that's constantly used to hurt me.

So for someone to say “because of these things I think she was a trans woman teehee!” they are implicitly 1) denying that any other aspect of identity might cause these feelings, and 2) asserting that if someone feels these things, they must be a woman.

Ignoring his Judaism AND implying that men can’t feel alienated or vulnerable and if they do they must actually have been a woman. Doesn’t seem very respectful or deconstructing of gendered norms to me.

People need to either start recognizing that you can empathize and identify with jews on our own terms or you can stop fucking talking about us.
