I love the idea of weird little idiomatic expressions in the Tolkien universe. Like, imagine saying someone’s going full Feanorian when they get a little obsessed with something or go overboard. Saying something’s gone the way of the lamps when it doesn’t exist anymore or has fallen out of favor/usage. Your luck’s been shit lately; are you sure Húrin isn’t your dad? Speaking of which, when you see something you really wish you hadn’t, now you know how Húrin felt. It’s just such a fun concept, I love it.

my cat hates taking his pills. the only way we can get him to eat them is to turn it into an elaborate pantomime - we take the packet out of the cupboard slowly and hold it up, saying “oh!! what’s this? what’s this? a TREAT? a TREAT for louis????” while making surprised faces. we offer him a pill… then, before he has a chance to sniff it, we wag our fingers at him and replace it in the packet so it becomes a Tantalising Forbidden Mystery. we continue doing this until he’s so confused and excited that he will eat the pill as fast as possible, just so he can find out what it is before we can take it away from him again. as soon as he’s eaten it he looks utterly disappointed and betrayed, like a child who just ate a delicious sweet only to find it was a chocolate-coated brussels sprout. it never gets old

I don't want to get all "hur hur that's not realistic" to amateur writers, but I want to make sure that everyone knows this: in a medieval or medieval-ish setting, someone who's seen an archer before would definitely be able to tell whether someone's an archer just by looking at them.

Archeologists can't tell for sure whether someone was assigned male or female when alive from bone structure, but they can tell whether someone was an archer. Longbow archer, anyway. The way their arms and shoulders were strongly muscled in a very asymmetrical way is pretty much unmistakable, and they were muscled enough that it's visible in their bones. If someone's seen what archers look like, they can tell whether a stranger they've never seen before can shoot a bow or not.

Finding an unarmed and unconscious, soft-bodied and narrow-shouldered stranger in the woods, the first clue that this mf is not a ranged nor melee fighter is not by whether his fingers are calloused in the right places for a bowstring. A medieval bowman was built like a brick shithouse.
