I Don’t Like Pride
Before you hate me or call me a bad queer, hear me out. This is something I really felt like I needed to get out after Decadence this weekend.
I don’t like most (if not all) LGBT+ gatherings/celebrations. But this has nothing to do with what’s being celebrated or how it’s being celebrated. I love that people can find safety, love, and support in massive gatherings and parties. I love that strangers can come together for each other like that. I love that my community is celebrated and strong enough to walk almost bare naked down the streets being who they are in glitter and rainbows with their heads held high.
I love that so much. But I also hate it. I hate that I can’t be a part of it.
I’m not just an extremely introverted person who has to gather a bunch of energy just to hang out with a small group of friends. I’m someone with severe anxiety. I’m someone with claustrophobia which is made worse in a crowd. I’m someone who doesn’t/can’t drink, so parties/bars aren’t fun or safe spaces for me. But I’m also not underage so every LGBT+ event for my age is made to be with alcohol.
So, I miss out of the safety, love, and support of these events/celebrations because they aren’t meant for me. They don’t cater to the shy, introvert, sober queer person that I am. I get lost in the party scene that the LGBT community so often becomes and in the end feels like I’m not queer enough or not the right kind of queer or whatever else.
I am just as prideful of my identity and who I am even if I prefer to stay away from crowds. But with how our community is set up, I’m bound to feel like I’m not and tend to have few fellow queer friends (mostly because I miss out on going to LGBT spaces where I could meet them).
This party mentality has to change. Yes, we can still have the bars, dances, parades, and celebrations. But we also need coffee shops, book clubs, celebrating without alcohol, etc. We need to make everyone feel safe, love, supported, and included.
Everyone. Even the introvert, anxiety-riddled, sober queer kid who just wants to fly his freak flag without all the noise, close bodies, and alcohol.
Is that too much to ask for? Does that make me a bad queer?
