Review of “Harry Potter series” by Joanne Rowling

This so-called Marauders fanfic begins with an inexplicably chosen POV character, some random child named Harry who didn’t even exist during the Marauders’ era. The author seems to have written an entire saga about him while the interesting characters (Sirius, Remus, James, Regulus, Lily, etc.) languish in the background like discarded OC sketches.

The prose is amateur at best: overuse of adverbs, laughably childish dialogue, and “worldbuilding” that confuses whimsical nonsense with actual consistency. The magic system reads like it was copy-pasted from a children’s board game, then promptly abandoned whenever it got inconvenient for the plot.

The author’s clear self-insert, Harry, is a bland messiah figure gifted with such thick plot armor he makes Superman look fragile. Every adult is either worshipping him, exploiting him, or dying for him—never mind that the real stars of the Marauders era barely get screentime outside of trauma flashbacks. Not to mention the outdated, and frankly weird ships. Like Jily we can tolerate. But to have the audacity to suggest Remus Lupin is straight? No honey. We're done here.

Worst of all, the supposed feminist themes are undermined by the author’s obsession with shoehorning women into either saintly mothers, nagging wives, or cardboard villains. The gender politics are so outdated it’s practically a period piece, and not in a good way. We should've know this salty bitch would've turned to transphobia, masquerading as feminism.

In summary: “The Boy Who Lived” is what happens when someone logs onto AO3, filters out all the well-written Marauders fic, and decides to reinvent the wheel with no grasp of narrative craft. There are dozens of fanfics—Just Lovers, Crimson Rivers, Only the Brave, All the Young Dudes—that do everything this fic tried to do, but with actual artistry. Joanne’s draft should have stayed in her desk drawer where it belonged.
