haha nooooo fandom don't sand off all the rough edges and pointy bits off of that character those are the parts I scratch my brain with
You don’t own fanfics. They’re inherently public domain because they aren’t your IP. Agree or disagree with AI, there are no grounds for “protection” from AI because it isn’t your IP to begin with. That’s what you chose when you chose this medium
Oh dear.
Okay, you get an answer, because at least you took the effort to write your ask out properly, even if you are hiding behind the grey, sunglassed circle.
Do I, or any fanfic author for that matter, have any legal claims to our work? No, not really, no. (Although if someone took a fic, filed off the serial number--deleted the fandom specific elements--, and then had it published for financial gain, yeah, that would be a case.)
BUT
Fandoms are built on a social contract that says we respect each others work, the effort people put into their art. We don't steal or disrespect the work of our peers. By feeding people's fanworks to AI you both steal and disprect it, and we need to make people realize that before it's too late--before fandom falls apart, because there will be no more real, actual fanworks.
Disrepectfully,
Orlissa
(i can't believe I have to say this)
sigh.
Okay, so, you do own your fanfic that you wrote with your own words (at least in the US). Per US copyright law, you own the writing the moment you write it, by virtue of the fact that you wrote it. You don't own the IP, but you do own the writing. It is not "inherently public domain" (that's not how that works).
You can't profit off of someone else's IP. Yes, fanfiction is still technically a copyright infringement on your part (unless the original IP is in the public domain). But you also still hold the copyright on it.
This is why the original creator can't just steal ideas from your fanfic (or the words themselves) to then use in another installment of their IP. This is why so many original creators have policies against reading fanfic sent to them. It's to protect themselves from being accused of theft.

Just because it's not your IP doesn't mean you don't get protections on what you wrote, and that's what the OTF is about.
I just saw the most Galaxy Brain gender take ever, from a cis man on reddit
[ID: a screenshot of a comment from reddit, with no username visible. The commend reads: This doesn’t make a ton of sense to me either. Setting aside the question of whether gender/sex is assigned or observed at birth, the gender I was assigned at birth was ‘boy.’ The gender I have now is ‘man’. Boys and men have different gender roles, and few adults identify as boys anymore. From this standpoint, every adult has a different gender than the one they had at birth. End ID]
Framing “girl” and “boy” as separate genders from “woman” and “man” is such an amazing take. it’s a framework that accommodates and explains so many trans experiences. Some trans people never were their AGAB. Some feel like they were their AGAB, but that that changed (usually when puberty hits, which is when you start “becoming a man/woman”. The accepted societal path is that girls grow up to into women, and boys grow up into men. But some girls grow up into men, and some boys grow up into women. This guy was a boy who grew up into a man, which generally works out pretty well for people. Some boys and girls grow up into people who aren’t men or women, even! It’s like this random cis guy skipped right over transgender 101, 102, 201, etc. and stumbled directly into Transgender Nirvana.

Curious now as to if my applications last year were filtered through this system. Some companies (like Adobe, Oracle, etc) should have jumped at my experience in lifecycle management but I either heard nothing at all or a form rejection weeks after applying.

This is my aesthetic. I've found it at last. mountain road signs bearing sexual puns.
i don’t think i’m exaggerating when i say that the average height for women in the US would increase by at least an inch if teen girls were allowed to eat as much as teen boys are
and not to bring my own clocky bitch ass into this but if cis women weren’t so consistently starved their entire lives you’d see a lot more cis women with the kind of bodies that we currently associate closely with trans women. the amount that the standards of feminine presentation are culturally defined by malnutrition is crazy
I got denied for disability after waiting 2 ½ years for a response and the wording in the letter pissed me off. So I wrote a poem about it.

A Blacksmith’s Dream
Re: the last post, the article mentions that some places use clams to test the toxicity of the water. It’s like that in Warsaw- we get our water from the river, and the main water pump has 8 clams that have triggers attached to their shells. If the water gets too toxic, they close, and the triggers shut off the city water supply automatically.
The clams are just better at measuring the water quality than any man-made sensors.
Edit: check out this documentary trailer : https://vimeo.com/408820791
God Bless Our Troops
They hot glued a spring to a clam and gave it full control over the water supply
No of course not, that would be ridiculous.
They hot glued springs to eight clams and gave them collective control over the water supply.
No of course not, hot glue would kill the clams.
The used silicone adhesive to attach springs to eight clams and gave them collective control over the water supply.
everyone's talking about the ibs/autism haha funny comparison thing while I'm still stuck on the concept that hamsters exist in the wild. like naturally
tf do you mean they're a wild creature. you find those ankle-biters at the pet store
Not a biologist, but the evolution of mammals is way more granular than you might expect. Humans are the sole surviving species of the genus Homo, which was a real party before the other ones went extinct. You're in for a fun time.
Domestic cats are believed to be domesticated not from tigers, but from the African wildcat:
Which evolved to be small just because it's sometimes more useful to be small.
And no, hamsters are not off-brand rats. They're part of the rodent order, which includes beavers, moles, capybaras, guinea pigs (yes, also wild) and lots of other fun things:
Shit. This dude knows an extreme amount about a niche subject. Crazy what you can accomplish when you have treatment resistant IBS
I want it on record that I shit mostly normal.
the ironic thing is that IBS is part of a constellation of conditions that people with autism and adhd are more likely to have
if you have weird shit (figurative or literal) consider reading this with a highlighter ready:

for the last time, the “tumblr accent” is not an ACCENT it is a DIALECT
ok so it's not quite a dialect, since that would necessitate a fundamental shift in grammatical structure while still being sorta recognizable as the same language to speakers of other dialects
i mean, how fundamental you want to argue they are is somewhat YMMV, but the way people use language on this website has absolutely had grammatical and linguistic structure shifts from most "offline" dialects
it's hard to make a coherent argument for phonological changes because text-based website. lets ignore that one lol
from a morphological and vocabulary-based standpoint, there's a few. consider "glup shitto" and "blorbo", as well as generalized affix fuckery like -"ito" as a diminutive (from spanish but used here on non-spanish words), as examples of morphemes originally from tumblr. we also have the concept of the Sexyman (derogatory)
most of the really interesting tumblrspeak comes from syntax though. there is of course the oft-mocked, parodied, and misunderstood Tumblr Prose, where someone just sticks words together in an order that sort of conveys an aesthetic-based meaning as long as you don't think about it too hard and realize it doesn't make a whole lot of sense together
it's obvious what is being conveyed here even though the words barely function together. beyond Tumblr Prose, we also have Emphasis And Nounification Through Capital Letters, and its inverse where everything is lowercase unless it's being emphasized, as well as using sentences that while easily parseable by a reader do lack a lot of punctuation that would be desired by stricter english speakers often commas and periods. this last trait is particularly despicable considering the high amount of neurodivergence among tumblr users makes us very prone to run-on sentences anyway
there is also using "lol" and "lmao" similar to STOP on a telegraph, though it's hard to say how exclusive to tumblr this is
the in-joke about how being on tumblr is a cheat code to being funny as fuck around people who aren't is reliant on the fact that tumblr netizens are often playing with an entirely different set of learned syntax rules than non-tumblr residents
