There’s also this deeper question of who decides what you do and don’t deserve. Because everyone deserves a chance to become a better person than they used to be. Perhaps you don’t deserve wholesale forgiveness, but that shouldn’t be the goal. Anyone who decides you don’t deserve redemption because you don’t deserve their personal forgiveness is a villain of the arc.
