CourseTalk joins new international MOOC group

MOOC Expert Committee launches to advance online learning

Global members span nonprofit, academic, governmental, business worlds

WASHINGTON — October 6, 2015 — Online courses have the potential to expand quality education, provide scientific and cultural content, and offer career training and professional development worldwide. To this end, a public-private partnership has formed to harness the power of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), which are available to anyone with no enrollment caps or application process.

The MOOC Expert Committee is a rallying platform of professionals from different industries, organizations and countries working to advance learning through MOOCs. The Committee will create a community, provide space for dialogue, exchange ideas and innovative practices, showcase technologies and underscore pedagogical aspects of online learning around the world.

Aiming to identify educational trends, the Committee will promote new technologies and eventually advise policy makers on effective open education endeavors. Members of the Committee bring complementary perspectives on how to design, implement, monitor and evaluate MOOC-based programs around the globe.

MOOC Expert Committee members include:

IREX — An international nonprofit organization that promotes just, prosperous and inclusive societies by developing leaders, promoting quality education and access to information, and strengthening communities and institutions that advance positive change.

Q&A with a record-setting CourseTalk reviewer

Greg Hamel recently left his 100th CourseTalk review, setting a new site record! We decided it was the perfect opportunity to ask this prolific reviewer about his online learning journey. Greg is a Minneapolis-based writer with a B.A. in economics. He took his first online class, on computer programming, in 2011 through MIT OpenCourseWare, and he’s been taking MOOCs ever since. Read on for insights from a seasoned online learner.

CourseTalk: What are the top five courses you've taken?

Greg: In no particular order...

CourseTalk: Why do you write reviews?

Greg: To reflect on courses and consolidate my own learning, while helping other students set the right expectations when enrolling in MOOCs.

CourseTalk: How many courses do you take at once? When do you review in that process?

Greg: It varies, depending on whether there are courses being offered that interest me. Sometimes I’m not taking any courses at all, and sometimes I sign up for five or more at time. I sign up for many more courses than those I actually complete and review. I often sample a course for 15 to 30 minutes and drop it if I don’t like where it’s going. I generally only review a course after I’ve gone through all the video content.

CourseTalk: How has all this online learning benefited you in your everyday life?

Greg: I understand myself better. I have a better sense of what I know, what I don’t know and where and how to learn things I don’t know. I also understand the digital world much better. Studying computing gives you a whole new perspective on the technology you interact with on a daily basis. On the practical side, I have acquired many useful skills like Python and R programming, data analysis and predictive modeling.

CourseTalk: What's your best advice for students? For instructors?

Greg: For students - If you get stuck, seek help in course forums and revisit material after taking a break for a day or two. Don’t fixate on grades.

For instructors - Face time is very important. I almost never like courses with little instructor face time. Delivery is also important. A genuinely passionate instructor who is able to project that passion in lectures is what separates a good course from great course.

CourseTalk: What are your plans for learning online in the future?

Greg: As long as there continue to be new, freely-accessible courses that interest me, I’ll continue taking at least a course or two off-and-on for the foreseeable future. I have my eye on the new machine learning and big data specializations on Coursera. I’m also enrolled in Statistics for Business II on edX.

Harvard’s HBX CORe answers our 5 burning questions

CourseTalk is proud to have HBX CORe — Harvard Business School’s online program teaching business fundamentals in 11 weeks — as a new provider. We recently spoke with Ross Pearo, Director of Marketing and CORe Product at HBX, to get the inside scoop on Harvard’s exciting new venture into the world of online learning. His main message? Don’t be afraid to apply. It takes less than 30 minutes, and HBX is happy to admit as many people as are a good fit for the program. “Our goal is to allow anybody we think can benefit from the program to go through it and participate in what can be a transformational experience,” he said.

CourseTalk: What makes CORe different from other programs that teach business fundamentals?

Ross Pearo, HBX CORe: When we developed HBX CORe, we tried to isolate the things that make a learning experience at Harvard Business School different from that of any other business school, and it came down to three key aspects.

First, and perhaps most important, is our reliance on the case methodology. At HBS, our professors and faculty don't lecture, and they don't teach concepts in the abstract; everything is taught in the context of a real-world situation, and we do that same thing with CORe.

The second differentiator is that we wanted to create a very active learning experience. People who get the most out of HBS are active participants in the learning process, and we wanted to do that with CORe, as well. This manifests itself in what we call the three-to-four minute rule; every three to four minutes, we want our learners to change the way they engage with the course and their peers. For example, they might watch a short video, then take an interactive poll and then maybe answer some questions before reading text. We want people to be constantly engaged and challenged and to learn in a variety of ways.

The third way CORe is fundamentally different is that it’s very social. It's not an isolated online experience. CORe is delivered in cohorts of 350 to 500 people, so you're part of a really active and vibrant learning community. People are encouraged and required to talk with each other, to answer each other's questions, to challenge each other and to really help everyone learn and apply the material much more effectively.

CourseTalk: Soon after becoming dean of Harvard Business School, Nitin Nohria said HBS would never partake in online education in his lifetime. What changed?

Ross Pearo, HBX CORe: That’s almost become part of the internal lore at HBX. Relatively soon into his deanship, I think Dean Nohria got to the point where he recognized an opportunity for Harvard Business School to lead. There were all of these things happening in the online world with MOOCs — different ways of trying to engage people online and make learning a much richer experience. He saw these changes as an opportunity for us to take some of the things that make Harvard Business School special and figure out how to do it online. He also saw an opportunity for us to leapfrog what other schools and companies were doing, plus there was a level of comfort with technology’s ability to allow us to do that. Seven, eight or 10 years ago, I don't think we could've built the type of platform that supports the CORe program because the tools just didn't exist. However, in the last couple of years, the dean saw we had a window where the school could make a bold move into the online learning space and do something the school could be really proud of. It had to be something that was consistent with our mission, which is to educate leaders who make a difference in the world, and we had to do it in a way that our faculty and alumni would really be proud of.

CourseTalk: CORe just celebrated its first anniversary. What have you learned, and what’s planned for the future?

Ross Pearo, HBX CORe: We’ve accomplished a lot in our first year. We had two full cohorts complete the CORe experience, and we currently have another 2,700 students at some point in their CORe journey. We've learned how to support customers at a very large scale, which is not something we've ever really had to do at Harvard Business School. We've also learned that a lot of the things we hoped would be the case turned out to be true. For example, we wondered if the three tenets of the CORe program — case-based learning, active learning and social learning — would really play out to create a rich and dynamic learning experience, and we’ve learned from the first year that we’re on to something. It's not perfect, but there are a lot of things we will continue to refine over the coming years to make the experience an even more rewarding one for the people who participate in it.

CourseTalk: MOOCs are often criticized for their low completion rates, typically in the single digits. HBX’s completion rate is over 80 percent. What’s your secret?

Ross Pearo, HBX CORe: I think there are three things that really drive our completion rates.

First, there’s the selectivity component. The people in the program are ones that we really believe are likely to be successful, and we look for evidence of aptitude and motivation when we make our admittance decisions. We have an application that really looks to identify learners who will engage in the program, and though we have no goals of being exclusive, we do want to be somewhat selective. We still admit the majority of people who apply, but we want to make sure the people in the cohorts are all there for the same reasons and that they are really interested in becoming a part of this community of learning.

We also think it's important that people make a financial commitment to the program. People who pay for a program, I think, are much more committed to engaging, getting as much out of it as they possibly can and ultimately completing. At the same time, we have a mission of access, and we’re still looking for ways to expand that access. We offer need-based scholarships for college students, and we want to mitigate potential barriers as much as we can, but we believe that even the highest-need students should have some financial investment in the program and their success in it.

The third thing is that, as an organization, part of our role is to help people understand what's expected of them and to work with them throughout the program so they have the necessary tools and knowledge to budget their time, manage their expectations and do all the things that they need to successfully complete the program, study for the exam and ultimately earn the credential.

CourseTalk: What’s your #1 piece of advice for students considering the CORe program?

Ross Pearo, HBX CORe: I would want to make sure people were committed. If you’re not able to commit yourself wholly to this experience, consider waiting until you can. This is the type of program where you get out what you put in. We’re looking for people who are able to devote the time, who are willing to apply themselves and who will throw themselves into the community so they can take advantage of learning from peers from all over the world with different academic backgrounds, work histories and career aspirations. I really think it's important to be willing to put yourself out there and get as much out of the learning experience as you possibly can.

What we heard at SXSWedu: 4 trends in online education

CourseTalk is back from SXSWedu! The annual conference in Austin, Texas is quickly becoming the place to learn about innovations in world of the education. We attended tons of talks, plenty of panels and multiple mixers; here are the themes that kept popping up.

Credentials: The future of online learning?

Credentials — whether in the form of badges, certificates or nanodegrees — verify that you’ve completed an online course, and they were a hot topic at SXSWedu this year. The majority of people we encountered believe credentials will take online education to the next level, but most conceded that employers will ultimately be the ones who decide whether or not credentials have value. In one session, EDUCAUSE, an association of higher ed IT professionals, shared that more than 70 percent of online learners who post credentials on social media do so on LinkedIn. Clearly, those learners think the business world wants to see evidence of their online learning; let’s see if if it turns out to be true.

Putting the Hollywood in MOOCs

Production experts in attendance had one clear message: MOOCs are no longer in their infancy, and it’s time to step up the quality of videos and interactive elements. “If you take great pedagogy and you want to really get that massive reach, you have to deliver it in a way that can stand up to everything else out there,” said Emory University’s lead videographer, Ray Jones, during a panel called “Putting the Hollywood in MOOCs.” (You can see an example of Emory’s videography in this upcoming course on Ebola.) We felt proud that so many of CourseTalk’s schools and providers are ahead of the game with stellar visuals.

Giving students a voice

Many sessions at this year’s event emphasized the importance of encouraging students to share their skills and expertise. Sessions like “Students Take the Power Back!” focused on how students can learn from each other, while “Raising Their Hands: Empowering Student Voice” discussed how student advocacy can improve schools and communities. As further evidence of this trend, we noted a vast number of sessions featuring students as expert panelists.

Education as a change agent

One thing everyone at SXSWedu could agree on: Education has the power to change the world. That was one of the main takeaways from the closing keynote by Sal Khan, creator of Khan Academy, the platform that’s revolutionized online learning with its straightforward and free instructional videos. “I think, collectively, we have a shot at taking this thing called education … and making it closer to clean drinking water or shelter, just a fundamental human right,” he said.

Our own session with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) fit perfectly into this theme. We announced that CourseTalk and USAID are launching a $1.55 million initiative to bring online education to the developing world. Over the next two years, we’ll work with IREX (a nonprofit develop organization) and the Technology & Social Change Group at the University of Washington’s Information School to learn how MOOCs can help young adults in developing countries grow successful careers. We were thrilled to be able to announce the initiative at SXSWedu, and the response we received was superb.

USAID, CourseTalk, IREX and TASCHA Launch $1.55 Million Initiative to Bring Online Education to Developing World

Two-year initiative focuses on youth workforces in Colombia, Philippines and South Africa

AUSTIN,Texas — March 10, 2015 — Online courses have the potential to expand quality education and career training worldwide, but few people in developing countries access them. Now, the U.S.Agency for International Development (USAID) and CourseTalk.com,the largest source of reviews of online courses, are launching a two-year, $1.55 million project to investigate and address this unmet potential.

The initiative, called Advancing MOOCs for Development, will be driven by research on online course enrollment in Colombia, the Philippines and South Africa. The research will be conducted by the Technology & Social Change Group (TASCHA) at the University of Washington’s Information School with support from IREX, a non-profit development organization.

The initiative will be unveiled at 3 p.m. CDT at the SXSWedu conference in Austin, Texas.

The public-private partnership aims to harness the power of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) to help young adults across the developing world grow successful careers, potentially leading to stronger economies. MOOCs are open to anyone – with no enrollment caps – and often free.

"In many developing countries, traditional education systems are failing students,” said Rachel Blum, Senior Advisor for Youth Workforce Development at USAID. “Economic constraints, political upheaval, war and natural disaster are all leading causes. But MOOCs have the potential to change this. By answering key questions — who takes MOOCs, why they take them and what inhibits those who don’t — this project will help us better understand MOOCs and their role in offering affordable, quality education to young people worldwide."

Research on MOOCs has been sparse, and the first year of the project will seek to alleviate this data gap. TASCHA will use surveys, interviews and an analysis of more than 70,000 course reviews posted on CourseTalk by students around the world to study awareness and usage of MOOCs among 18 to 35 year olds in Colombia, the Philippines and South Africa.

TASCHA’s findings will be used to develop a framework for training young workforces through MOOCs. They will also form the basis of a campaign designed to increase MOOC enrollment and completion rates in the three chosen countries. The eventual goal is to replicate the research in other developing countries around the world.

“The potential for MOOCs to alter the educational landscape is amazing, reaching far beyond Colombia, the Philippines and South Africa,” said IREX’s Scott Andersen, director of the initiative. “MOOCs show great promise as a way to support global youth who are longing for employment, and this initiative focuses on three key countries in the hope that lessons learned will benefit those young adults around the world.”

USAID and CourseTalk have committed cash resources of $1.05 million, plus an additional $500,000 of in-kind services and support.
