I remember, back in the Before time (around 2015), browsing The Onion and getting a nasty shock like this. They had used a publicity photo taken at my previous workplace of the woman who had directly replaced me (!), and photoshopped someone else's face onto her body. But our coworkers were visible (unaltered) in the background, and our uniforms were left the same. Anyone who knew the workplace could identify that it was based on my friend instantly. The joke caption was really unflattering, and my friend was hurt and upset (even though her face wasn't used).

It was weird and gross then, when people were manually photoshopping this stuff. And it's weirder and grosser now that the process has been automated.

Nothing infuriates me like seeing (mostly white) people move to australia specifically from europe, usa, etc and they make social media posts like "omg australia is a utopia!! it's so much better here than [x country]!! there's no problems like [x country we absolutely have the same or similar problems as] and everyone and everything is laid back and easy!!" because all they show me is you're a fucking coloniser without even the courtesy to do basic research. how about you google offshore island detentions, deaths in custody, ndis cuts, press freedom (spoiler: there's almost none), pine gap military base, what happened to palestinian visa holders the last 3 years, how many ppl facing prison time for being pro-palestine accross multiple states, the data centers being built illegally, google "closing the gap outcomes", look up how many coal mines have been and are projected to be built on stolen land in a climate crisis, look up how many 1000s of people have been displaced and made homeless without relief or recourse thanks to climate-change driven floods and fires, look up how many DV deaths there are a week, and if you have a bit more time maybe take a fucking squiz at how the most popular politician in the country rn is an old white woman who has been convicted of racist and islamophobic abuse by the highest court in the country, and most recently flew to London to do a podcast with an actual Nazi who's so fucking evil not even nigel farage would associate with him....and she's the most popular politician in the country. i get it's exciting to move and be somewhere new that may seem or even be better in some ways than where you're from, but read the room and have some respect.
