Support your local gay superhero
Midnighter is the first openly gay male superhero to headline his own standalone series.
Sadly, DC might cancel Midnighter’s comics due low sales (x).
He was part of Wildstorm Studios (Stormwatch, The Authority) until they went bankrupt and some of their characters were absorbed by DC Comics’ “the new 52″.
The character was created as an analog for Batman. Apollo was inspired in Superman. So he and his husband are basically: canonically gay Batman and Superman.
Unlike Batman, he actually has superpowers and kills his enemies.
If you like Batman, The Punisher or Deadpool you’ll probably like him. He’s a dark vigilante who has a black sense of humor and is comics are quite violent.

Why is he important to LGBT+ community?
He’s very open and comfortable about being gay. There’s no tragic coming out story, self-hate for being homosexual or “let’s make him gay just for the shock factor” background.
He’s just super-hero (or anti-hero) that happens to be gay. In the comics he has a lot of activities, enemies and issues, but they don’t interfere with his sexuality or love life.
In the Wildstorm universe, he is in a stable relationship with Apollo. They had been a couple in comics for almost 17 years.
They were the second gay couple to marry in comics. Apollo and Midnighter married after gay marriage became legal in New York in 2002.
Also they adopted a girl months later, after they rescued her.
His creator/writer in “the new 52″ is LGBT+ himself (x).
Sadly, when DC rebooted the character, he and Apollo are no longer together, but it’s shown that even if it was difficult for them, they broke up because it was healthier (x)(x).
Gay characters in comics are rarely allowed to show affection, having sexual life or being even visible. It is not the case for midnighter. We have seen him
taking care of her adopted daughter (x)(x)(x)(x)
showing affection (x)(x)(x)(x)(x)
having a active (and healthy) sexual life (x)(x)(x)(x)(x)
meeting his boyfriend family (x)(x)
doing positive activities with friends and dates, such as exercising together (x), going to bars and clubs (x), going on field trips(x), finding support (x) and celebrating thanksgiving (x).
He has killed a lot of people, but refuses to hurt children and animals.
Ironically, he wears Batman Underwear (x).
Also he a backstreet boys poster in his room (x).
Midnighter once rescued a lot of animals that were captured for experiments and he adopted a “bionic” dog (x) that was rejected by his original owner.
He’s a tough guy, but he never holds back when it comes to calling cute name to his husband and showing affection.
He kills his enemies, but if he has to work with someone who doesn’t, he respects it and plays by their rules (x).
“Midnighter has proven to be one of the laugh-out-loud funniest books, as well as one of the more emotionally weighty ones. It doesn’t hurt that the plot isn’t totally driven by revenge or violence, giving Midnighter moments to flirt and love and make jokes about Dick Grayson’s ass, and there’s never enough of that.” (x).
Is a chaotic good cinnamon roll.
I highly recommend DC’s version of the character, but Wildstorm version is also very good.
