Happy Pride Month from Dalinar Kholin

A silly art of the brothers that I drew after I stumbled upon a review where someone reposted my first Renarin portrait only to put a rant about him below it, smh
I’d really appreciate it if people would stop uploading and using my art without credit and without my permission. ;; I don’t mind small, low res use in memes and icons. It’s the pinterest/ social media/ blog reposts that frustrate me.
can't stop thinking about Maya having mastectomy scars, so I'm going to draw them
here is a quick sketch

Also, consider. A magical version of the bends. Whenever someone from a non- or low-magical land has to go into a very magic rich forest or land or dimension, having to take breaks to let their bodies adjust to the new magic exposure or else their blood will boil in their veins or they'll Transform
actually the bends only kicks in when you try to LEAVE the high pressure area. or in this case, magic rich area?
Getting deeper and deeper into feywilds and knowing that however deep you get, it’s gonna take twice as long to escape without magic tearing its way out of you

3 new Radiant paths, including one for the Bondsmith
Thrill mechanics and ideas for Old magic boons
Enough new fabrials to make any artifabrian dizzy
New stat blocks, featuring spren and radiants
And much much more!
This took seven months of my life, so please spread the word! Of course, SPOILER WARNING: This book has plot heavy spoilers for Wind And Truth. Read with caution!

[ID: A digital illustration by @chainedseraph depicting the cover of a homebrew Cosmere RPG in the same style as the original covers, with a central image in a circular frame, and curved lines surrounding it reminiscent of an Art Nouveau style. The cover is green with the cosmere symbol at the top, and the Stormlight symbol above the title, which reads “Cultivation’s Hoard: A Fanmade Expansion for the Cosmere Roleplaying Game.” The art in the circular frame shows a shanay-im Fused with white and red marbling holding a long lance. She hovers in the background as two other figures clasp hands in the foreground, joyspren erupting upwards between them. The figure on the left has blue skin and long blue hair that floats upwards. She wears a Kholin uniform in a skirt style, and raises her arm above her head, throwing back her head with a joyful, open-mouthed laugh. The other person she’s clasped hands with has brown skin with unusual tattoos, and wears a long green cloak with a hood, and they look at the joyful person warily. The link leads to a pdf in which most of the text is readable, but I believe the images are not. End ID.]

I actually ended up reworking a lot of Moash’s plotline in Rhythm of War. Originally Kaladin was going to give him a medal that said “you were right for killing Elhokar actually” and then French kiss him. I had to cut it because I realized there’s no France on Roshar.

Rlain having zero meaningful interpersonal bonds among the Listeners was really a huge cop-out from Brandon. This character, who is often the sole voice of the Listeners to the human faction. doesn’t have any feelings about Renarin’s family being the ones to start and continue a war against the Listeners for years, because he’s never shown to have family or friends that were deeply effected by the war. The Alethi war against the Listeners was genocidal. They intended to keep fighting until the Shattered Plains were depleted of resources and the Listeners were extinct. They didn’t let the Listeners surrender.
So you’d think that a character like Rlain would have more complicated feelings about falling in with the humans, especially after living as a parshman slave for an unknown amount of time. Bridge Four treats him marginally better but still violate his boundaries and deeply upset him.
We learn in Wind and Truth that Rlain’s parents are dead and he apparently has no other family. His parents didn’t die in the war though; that would make his romance with Renarin too complicated. Instead, they died in a natural accident of the chasms. He has no close friends because of his gayness and is an outsider to his entire community.
Now I’m not saying that queer people aren’t othered by their communities, that would be ridiculous. But I am saying that it feels like a cop-out for Rlain to miraculously have zero close relationships with anyone who has been deeply hurt or killed by the war with the Alethi. Because if he had, that would make his relationship with Renarin more complicated than a cute gay romance. It might require Renarin to examine the power dynamics at play between the Alethi and the Listeners. It might make the human characters consider the personhood of more Listeners and singers than just Rlain. And it does Rlain as a character a disservice, because it makes all of his past before meeting Bridge Four and Renarin feel completely lifeless. Is he really nothing without his bonds with humans? Does this justify what the Alethi did?
I'm not a fan of Gavinor being the champion just... as a concept, but I think to make it less bad it at least would have been interesting to age him up to a young teen rather than adult man. Taravangian already has been twisting cultural conventions to his benefit, and it would have been an interesting Fuck You if he made Gavinor the minimum age that the Alethi would accept a boy to participate in war and duels. When I mentioned this with friends, one said it would also be a more apt and obvious take regarding radicalization of young men.
The only thing that makes me almost glad it didn't happen this way is that he becomes the same age as Lift and even the possibility of obligatory romance unnerves me. If they were strictly friends, I'd probably be all for it as it would give them stronger parallels with Gavinor growing up too fast and Lift growing up too slow. That said obligatory romance is too much of a monkey's paw catch.
I find it so poetic that Jasnah, being a veristitalian she strives for unbiased and factual "reconstructions" of past historical events in order to understand the present and be prepared for the future.
But you cant have unbiased accounts of history at least not completely. Because we as human beings cannot help but be biased. And I find it is so fitting for her character to try to remove this vital human aspect from history in the name of the greater good.
While Hoid, on the other hand, has spent the past ten thousand years spreading stories all across the universe, and all stories are, at their core, just really biased accounts of real historical events.
Hoid, unlike Jasnah, doesn't try to remove those vital human aspects of history but in fact adds to them so that the people of the present can learn from the mistakes of the past and build towards a better future.
They're doing the same exact thing but approaching it in such vastly different angels and It informs us so much about both of their respective characters and how they view the world. They're both such perfect foils of each other not just in this particular instance but in so many other facets too that it genuinely makes me want to go insane.
I love this and I'm trying to have a coherent thought about it ..
Jasnah is haunted by the time when she was a child when she was out of control, and that's spiralled into trying to have as much control as possible. She wants the best outcome for the most people, but she comes at it from the need to be in control of that outcome. She's using her Veristitalian training to search for the mathematical formula that drives history so she can KNOW with certainty that she's making the best decision for everyone.
Meanwhile Hoid made a choice with 16 other people to kill God when they felt they had no other option, and since then he's been driven to open up options for everyone else. He wants the best outcome for everyone but for him that means giving them the power of having more choices, to have the power to act according to their deepest values rather than predicting a specific outcome. Whenever he's telling his stories to support someone, they're at a crossroads, and he ends up helping them see an option they hadn't considered before the story. He doesn't push a particular choice, but he wants to ensure that people have the most choice possible. I'm sure he wishes he could go back in time and choose a different option.
I think Hoid's push for opening up options would at first intrigue Jasnah but ultimate frustrate her, because she is looking for the specific, perfect option that will give her the power to control the outcome. On the other hand Hoid would probably feel pity for Jasnah because he knows deep in his soul that even if you do something for the greater good, you can't ever really predict the outcome; rather, the best option is the one you can live with.
