supergirl was so good!! it was badass and bittersweet. they did a really great job at exploring grief and death in a pg13 movie. visually darker than superman, but the colors were still vibrant which was amazing since this age of media loves that monotone, dull, cool tone filter.
tw: themes of suicide, self-harm, and child sexual abuse in this movie.
spoilers below.
i did NOT expect part of her plot taking down a child sex trafficking ring?? DID NOT see that coming but wow!! decent choice since this movie is about a powerful young woman finding her way in a world that's not hers while men prey on her and little girls. she protected ruthie & those girls from pedophiles and child rapists.
she whoops ASS in this movie, it was very cool to watch. i absolutely love that kara doesn't hold back from her fighting like clark does. she knows how strong she is and isn't afraid to use it. her parents encouraged her to use her power for good and that's exactly what she does even if its revenge. i'm glad she killed kreem.
exploring her grief of losing her planet and her family was heartbreaking. hearing her pleading with father to let the kryptonite take her too just so that she doesn't have to leave them... wow. her relief of being able to feel pain when she throws herself into fights... i think they did a great job at exploring self-harm. which is also why i believe she made her choice to take kreem's life for ruthie. her soul is already broken. she's already killed people before, so she saved ruthie from living that kind of fate too.
having krypto being the only being she knows who has lived the same life as her was bittersweet too. cause to everyone else, krypto is just a dog but he's the only being she has to connect her to krypton. a life she could've had. he's so cute tho, just messing everything up like the good puppy he is lol
loved her small friendship with ruthie. it was only 3 days lol but it helped her move through her pain enough to go back to clark to try to build a home.
i can't to watch kara and clark work together in man of tomorrow!! they're so different but i can't wait to see them bond more and defend metropolis!!
note: went on twitter after i saw supergirl & lots of ppl are upset w the writing because it's not the same as the comic. damn, i'm so sorry to dc nerds :(( ik exactly what that's like when they don't follow the source material for your fave media. i'm really sorry it wasn't what you guys thought it was gonna be. as a beginner dc fan tho, this movie was pretty good!! even if you're a dc nerd i suggest watching it from an outside lense and tune in the emotionally hard themes!!
thursday was supposed to be a simple day trip to brooklyn w a “friend”. i’ll call her asshole. by the afternoon our flight got cancelled due to the weather. got to laguardia airport & customer service rebooked our flight. a worker told us ALWAYS get insurance bc of things like this. (remember this for later)
asshole booked a hotel all the way in manhattan w/o even discussing it w me. later i paid my half for both nights. thought i saw an earlier flight. i tell asshole “i see a new one, can i pay you pay back anyway [my half night 2] if we can get on this flight?” she agrees. not even 30 seconds later i say “oh no nvm that flight is for saturday”. asshole goes “i already cancelled the hotel”. didn’t discuss or tell me anything about cancelling beforehand, she just did whatever she wanted AGAIN. who travels w someone & won’t double check, ask clarifying questions, take time to plan together??
next morning, asshole tells me they charged her a cancellation fee of the same price. i tell her to call customer service to get a refund. she says “i can’t” over & over before admitting she didn’t book w insurance so no refunds. ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS?? we’re going back & forth as im trying to convince her to call to at least TRY to get her money back & she’s refusing. asshole then says i owe her half the cancellation fee & that this is both of our faults?? i already paid what i owed, im not paying for YOUR mistake.
i update my mom & my mom calls customer service FOR HER. she does her thing & said hotel will contact asshole’s email about issuing her refund. during the process, asshole was still saying i have to pay her back & irritated that i’m trying to fix HER mistake.
later, asshole texts me, leaves me for dead in manhattan, & blocks me on everything. i spent 20 hours at the airport before getting on an early delayed flight home all alone. saw her at o’hare so she made it home safe, but had no idea if she got her refund. i took the greatest shower of my life & slept like 14 hours.
yesterday, my mom got a call from the hotel that asshole got refunded. so asshole put both of our lives in danger for nothing. not only that, but she lied to me. she told me the cancellation fee was the same price as the booking, over $200, but her refund was $175. so asshole wanted me to pay her half of the fee, but it would’ve been more than what i owed. so this bitch wanted to scam me out of my own fucking money.
asshole is a CUNT. i hope anywhere & anytime she travels, something terrible happens & she wastes even more money than she did this weekend. what a terrible human being.
everyone hates jordan’s fuck ass bob but imo i think they look pretty & it shows that they’re getting more comfortable being more fem as a guy just like how they dress masc as a woman & wear their signature pearl chain
thomas goldokin having such a quick death felt unsatisfying… but i also understand why bc it’s on theme in this universe where characters die unexpectedly quick deaths. in the boys it’s kinda normal for the characters to murder everybody & just move on as like a motion that loss of humanity is descentized to those with morals & meaningless to evil supes. but i wanted more from him & marie’s story.
questions:
how did goldokin discover his powers?? idk why he took the v regardless since he knew his colleagues were gonna die from it but, how was he even able to access his power from being nearly burnt alive & no use of his body except his brain? he kept telling sage that he needs to learn how to use his powers to be able to control marie yet he’d been harnessing the body & brain of doug for like 30 years + being able to control jordan through a body that wasn’t even his… but he couldn’t control marie that entire time until he miraculously did at the end?
how did goldokin & sage meet? we’ll probably get more answers in the boys season 5 but i’m just yapping lol i don’t understand sage’s play here… she was working with homelander bc the chaos of humanity is exciting to her but here she was hopping on goldokin’s doug dick begging him to follow their plan… what plan?? how did they meet??
what’s up with marie’s powers? healing polarity & resurrecting her sister was literally nothing but a nose bleed but healing goldokin was what made her weak enough to not even be able to heal doug’s internal bleeding?? (rip doug) she lifted up like 5 of her friends to cause them pain & then later on head popped goldokin like victoria neumann does… why couldn’t she do that right after she trained & learned cipher/goldokin was a psycho??
why did they change the elmira prison layout? season 1 finale they were all stuck in one white room with no doors but season 2 they’re all in seperate rooms each with a door. marie escaped bc a guard was transporting her to another room & left the rest of friends there… also, why was emma in a glass container in the middle of the room as opposed to being locked in a metal cell like cate & the others??
why did marie & jordan break up?! ik why they broke up :/ jordan is probably tired of doing laps with marie wondering the next time she was gonna abandon them again but still, i miss my fave couple already. marie told jordan like a week ago they loved each other & now they’re not together anymore wtfff :/
comments:
bittersweet that they re-wrote the plot around andre aka chance perdomo’s passing, using polarity’s power instead of his. i actually liked that polarity wanted vengeance for his son.
sam’s character development is really funny & weird to me bc he told emma that he’s taking responsibility for his actions (murdered like half of the humans on campus but he meant in fixing their relationship lmfao) & that he got on new meds… who gave him new meds?? LOL they were all at stan edgar’s house wdym you started new meds
i love emma so much but i wanted to see more of her controlling her power :/ she’s always used as a tool to spy & can’t fight. the only fighting she did was kicking thomas goldokin after she grew big w/o eating for the first time & that’s all we got :/ if we get a s3 i hope to see her fight more
since marie & homelander share similar dna im hoping she can just take him out cause im so tired of him lmao i do wanna see a giant bloodbath of a battle happen tho, i don’t want any type of plot armor around the boys or even gen v, cause yk if they try to take down homelander, he will take them down with him.
very excited for s5 - final season of the boys & hopefully renewed for s3 of gen v bc i need more jordan!!
i will be writing 2 separate posts of the boys & gen v characters & my opinions on them <3 this universe is my latest hyper fixation & im having the time of my life. stay tuned!!
Yall do see that he's putting the suit INSIDE the box and that the title says STEVE ROGERS while they usually (except cases like Loki or Thor whose names are their hero names) use the hero names for the characters right? He's not coming back as CAPTAIN AMERICA he has a role as STEVE and it's not a leading role. Anthony was literally at every single filming location, any time there was a cast photo anywhere he was there. And following the mcu isn't hard at all it's just...watching things, not mining or open heart surgery.
……. okay and?? we know he’s coming back as steve rogers bc in the trailer they would’ve labeled him as captain america, not steve rogers… but reprising steve - a white man who held the mantle as the former captain america - is still disrespectful & overshadows sam wilson - a black man - as the new gen’s captain america. steve’s time was over 8 years ago. they only brought steve back bc their shitty writers wrote off the kang dynasty storyline.
imo, if they wanted him back so bad they could’ve written his time in a season of loki evading the tva instead of being part of doomsday where it was supposed to be about new gen characters.
i grew up in the mcu so i got to grow with the movies so it wasn’t hard for me at all. however, if you’re recently new to the mcu, it is extremely difficult to follow. 20 years worth of movies & tv shows - of not just the avengers, but also the x-men - to catch up on for a single avengers movie is very hard to learn in a short amount of time & shouldn’t be downplayed for newbies.
i understand what they’re doing with steve rogers in doomsday. him going back in time to be w peggy & them having a child while 1940s steve is still in the ice is a cool reason as to why universes are splitting apart.
but after all the bullshit marvel did:
• building up character development & then suppressing & discarding their most powerful & influential black, brown, queer, &/or female characters (sam wilson, riri williams, carol danvers, monica rambeau, shang-chi, the eternals, kate bishop, america chavez, kamala khan, etc)
• not re-casting jonathan majors as kang hence re-writing the entirety of phase 5 & 6
• doomsday being a cash grab of old white men nostalgia
• & submitting to white supremacy, copaganda, & zionism
knowing that is the reason why marvel went to trash after endgame & distinctively ruined our childhoods is heart breaking.
i’m grateful for the characters the built up this past decade but over-saturating the mcu with very fleshed out REAL characters just to strip them away for old white men that have been gone for decades is so fucking power hungry & greedy.
i love that james gunn was able to almost revitalize the mcu’s multiverse into dc in a more digestible way through superman & peacemaker.
if you wanted to get into phase 6 of the mcu, you'd have to catch up on 50+ complicated movies & tv shows to understand all the characters roles that's supposed to lead to doomsday. almost 20 years worth of media in the mcu
but if you're new to dc or rusty, you wouldn't have to catch up on years worth of lore or even any of the remakes. just watch superman & then peacemaker.
in a jist, in superman lex luther created a pocket universe to allow him to travel between dimensions before ripping part of the earth in two. in peacemaker, chris' father owns this device where he can open doorways into other universes. the message of it all was personal to not just chris but also a political message for the audience which was great imo
i think the mcu had some great movies & shows after endgame but the mcu has been falling apart for a while now because of how complicated & oversaturated it is.
james gunn's dcu has been amazing so far, not just comic accurate & politically aware, but it's digestable yet deep enough to dissect & reflect!
im on mid season 9 of supernatural & i miss the earlier seasons :(( when it was just the boys hunting demons & creatures & finding the truth about john’s disappearance & sam being hunted by the yellow eyed demon.
it’s taken me a few years to reach s9 bc i hop btwn shows & sometimes forget what happened so i start over. it’s fun n all & i like the complexity of supernatural in later seasons, but it does get exhausting seeing sam & dean go through the constant cycle of needing to save the world from angels vs demons & the abuse they put each other through. i miss the dark, foggy, & gloomy air. sam & dean running through the woods pit stopping at diners eating burgers & pie. at the libraries researching, calling bobby. how every ep was a new creature to hunt & ppl to save.
to get into the spirit of fall i think im gonna start over again & reminisce on the old supernatural :(
one thing i really like about superman is how kinda refreshing it was to see lex luther just being a fucking lunatic.
usually movies make the villains hate the hero bc they accidentally killed a loved one or they’re an evil person “just because” which are either watered down or overrsaturated. but lex maliciously murders innocents & create cataclysmic events out of pure envy bc superman gets all the attention… that’s it lmao
i don’t think media explores how crippling & spiteful jealousy can have on a person, let alone a multi-billionaire. this is what happens when the rich are riddled with apathy & envy. they destroy the world to feed their already overflowing pocket & fragile, childish egos.
clark shouting "people were going to DIE" in the face of the "think of the consequences of your actions" argument is so fucking important to me bc it really IS that simple you can't look at a genocide and just twiddler your thumbs bc you're a afraid of the consequences ESPECIALLY when you can do something about it and THATS WHAT CLARK DID. WITHOUT HESITATION. WITHOUT CONSIDERING HOW IT COULD HURT HIM. bc hes a good person and in his brain its really just people were going to die so i had to step in bc what else would it be. superman i love you i love you i love you
i can't stop thinking about it after i watched it yesterday. i actually left amc feeling pure joy - smiling on the train ride home. i was not expecting this level of hope & happiness from a dc movie considering man of steel & the batman movies are always so dark, mysterious, & brooding. this movie was funny, political, bright, full of hope, & my favorite... HUMAN.
spoilers below
when ppl were saying that superman 2025 was very anti-israel they were not lying! it was dead ass, no joke, a short play by play of israel's genocide on palestine from a pro-palestine pov. all they did was switch out the names for boravia & jarhanpur. i thought it was gonna be subtle too but no, it was blatant & obvious & WOW how refreshing it is & a breath of relief to have one of the most popular superheroes of all time not just be comic accurate but also have their missions & justice humanity represent current history - the right side of history too.
having hawkgirl (isabela merced who is pro-palestine) kill their version of netanyahu sent me lmaooo i read a comment that was like lex luthor invented zionism just because he hated superman" LMFAO
speaking of lex luthor, he ATE DOWNN. i'm ngl i knew of lex luthor, that he's one of suoperman's villains but idk who he is. i hadn't even realized i needed to hear a real villain's speech again until i saw lex luthor give his "envy is a calling, it is a sole hope for humanity because it is what has driven me to annihilating you 1A 1A 1A 1A" LMAOOOOOO that was so funny watching him scream 1A over & over but that speech was diabolical in the best way. he has a burning fury of pure hatred for superman. i have to re-watch the movie again because i'm still not even sure why lex hates him so much LOL but him working with the boravian government to commit a genocide amongst jarhanpur just for profit just to take down superman??? THAT'S INSANE?? LMAO?
but lois, jimmy, & the others were able to figure it out & tell the rest of the world which i absolutely loved because the movie just portrayed how important journalism is. they didn't undermine their abililties to gather intel & sources, but also to showcase that they fight for justice too. when the public found out the truth it was also refreshing to see that they thought it was fucked up & that lex luther sucks lol
i wanted to get into the journalism scene between lois & clark but i think that deserves its own post!
superman aka clark kent. wow. just wow. he's a cornball, a nerd, a sweetheart, and a man. a real man. his heart is gold. i love the premise of the movie was that he marked his identity of being a good person around the basis of his kryptonian parents message but really he is who he is because of his real parents - the kents. him watching recaps of his life with his parents at the end was so cute & so sweet. him at the farm after he got hurt just eating a bowl of whatever & talking with his dad was so nice to see because he just looked like a boy right there. just with his dad who was telling him that his actions & choices are what shape you, not his parents :( great advice mr kent. ugh, clark saving animals, citizens, & that whole sequence with metamorpho's son
lastly, i wanted to praise the other characters in the movie. dc comic fans had a lot to say about guy - the green lantern! sadly idek who he is but apparently he is not meant to be a good guy (no pun intended) but they writers made him likeable & dc comic nerds loved that so i'll take their word for it! but my faves were mr terrific & hawgirl!
metamorpho was pretty cool. i wish ik his backstory so i could see how he even got all these types of elements on his body. it was sad that he was using kryptonite to hurt clark but he only did it to try to save his son. but when he finally gave in to help, it was friggin cool how just made a sun?? & it helped heal clark? i thought his son was baby yoda at first LMAO
i wish hawkgirl (isabel merced) had more screen time :( idk her either but i remember isabela saying in an interview that kendra saunders has some demons in her & that we'll grow to like her. i hope to see more of her! i mean you could already tell she wasn't to be fucked with with the way she was whooping ass lol i LOVED her screech! ppl keep saying they did her dirty with the face shots but i disagree bc why is she supposed to look pretty when she's full of rage & kicking ass? that's already beautiful to me.
now mr. terrific... is SO FUCKING COOL. i had never heard of him either but i'm so happy i do now. his fight sequenece in lois's pov was awesome, i wanted to rewind so bad lmao i couldn't even catch all of it bc of how quick it was. his aura, his costume, & HE'S BLACK?? gimme 14 of em rn. they didn't demonize or dim his character & i found it refreshing that he's confident in his skills but we all know ppl are gonna try & spin him as being conceited because ofc black ppl can't ever be confident in themselves without ever being deemed as cocky. but I LOVED his character. idek what to call those devices he's connected to but it's just so cool. & 14 PHDS?? i need to see what his character is about.
i have always been a marvel girl, i grew up with the avengers movies. i know a lot about the mcu & the differences between the movies & some of the comics. but i grew up & learned how most of the marvel movies (now more current) are tools used to push pro-police, pro-israel, american propaganda & ideologies. it's become very stressful & overhwhelming to see superheroes - especially ones you looked up to from childhood - that are supposed to represent either or both oppressed minorities & ppl w moral & humanity fighting for justice be twisted, re-written, morphed into a white supremacist mindset. or even killed off or written with lukewarm material to uplift a stronger character. the x men in particular are some of the most blatant characters that are minorities fighting for their rights but maga ppl love to say that magneto would support trump.... magneto?? are we reading & watching the same stuff??
so having seen superman be an allegory for fighting for human rights not for something transactional but because it's the right thing to do is so special. that empathy & kindness is still here & real. especially today in 2025 when our country kills, tortures, & suppresses its ppl bc we're not rich & white.
i know very little of dc & i sincerely wish that i had gotten more into it as a teen :( but it doesn't matter because now i definitely want to get into the dc comics & universe. seeing superman re-vitalized my love for superheroes in general & how there is & will be media, books, comics that remind the world that there are people who still believe in humanity & fight for minorities, who fight for human rights & justice.
I have to resurrect my tumblr from the dead for my thoughts on the new Superman movie:
THIS WAS AN AMAZING MOVIE. THAT WAS SUPERMAN.
He’s corny, he’s midwestern, he’s a nerd and everyone kind of bullies him for it. He says things like “what the hay dude” or “I’m punk rock- I’m totally punk” completely seriously. He takes several extra precious seconds to save a squirrel. He’s ready to fly headfirst into danger to save his dog because the dog’s probably “scared and all alone” even though it’s not a particularly good dog all the time. He loves his parents. He has bad band posters hanging in his childhood bedroom. He takes the time to calm a lady on a rooftop in the middle of a fight. He cares.
As for the actual plot- it’s really difficult to make a Superman movie feel high stakes, especially while trying to keep it real. In the comics Superman gets into situations it would be nearly impossible to show on screen, like fighting in front of a black hole, but somehow this movie makes it work. James Gunn tapped into his experience making Guardians of the Galaxy and it shows in the best way possible. You find yourself wondering how in the world Superman is going to win- and that’s what makes this such an amazing superhero movie.
Superman’s true weakness isn’t kryptonite, it’s thinking and planning ahead. All the villains that beat him in the comics match his brawn, but have the brains to get an edge and have better fight strategy. All superman knows is that “people were going to die” and since he’s such an unbelievably GOOD guy, that’s all that matters to him. We saw it when the “justice gang” was helping him fight the alien monster and we saw it in Louis’s interview. When you have a superhero with barely any weaknesses, you need something more than the threat of losing a fight to make him interesting.
Now for Lex- no notes. He was brilliantly written. It can be difficult to take his character seriously, but that speech at the end where he was screaming to be recognized because, to him, humanity’s ability to overcome odds and achieve through innovation is critical and Superman’s existence risks overshadowing that? That was deadly serious.
Last serious note- I’m glad they kept it political. The United States government being scared of an alien and the threat of invasion despite the fact that Superman has done nothing but help them? A billionaire approaching the government to encourage foreign intervention because it will allow him to profit? A foreign power that the U.S. is officially allied to even though everyone knows they’ve committed horrible war crimes but nobody actually KNOWS that and the smaller neighbor they’re threatening to wipe out in order to “free” them from an oppressive regime? Superman declaring that he’s just like everyone else, that he’s human too and that’s his greatest strength? The idea of radical love? Yeah.
FINAL NOTE: I think that a scene from this movie sums up what I got from it very well. It’s when Louis is talking about how Clark isn’t punk rock. She says that he trusts everyone he’s ever met and he thinks that everyone is beautiful. And he responds: “maybe that’s punk rock.” He’s right. It is. And that’s Superman.
What's your take on how dbh used blm imagery? I know a lot of people think it's disrespectful and I'm inclined to agree but I'm curious on your thoughts about it.
honestly, i don’t feel disrespected by it. in my post on why the black characters of dbh had to be black, i mention in markus’s section on the use of blm imagery & why im glad markus was black bc of it.
if a white or non-black person was the leader of jericho that’s when id feel angry that they’d taken our history & given it to someone else who has never lived through it. but bc they chose jesse williams (who is also a known activist & former history teacher irl which makes his character more potent imo) & made his character a representation of him, i feel this was the best outcome.
i do see that it could all be in poor taste bc at the end of the day it’s a video game with an unrealistic fictional story line, but the plot itself has too many similarities to what black ppl have actually gone through. for that, im honestly glad they made sure to have important black characters bc it made it almost intentional for black gamers & viewers to resonate with. (but alas, everyone ofc gets swept away by connor but i digress)
as a black person myself, im personally not offended by the blm imagery of the game but another black person can be & totally has the right to it since the game is fictional.
why the black characters of detroit: become human HAD to be black | character study ♡
characters: markus, rose & adam, luther, amanda, lucy, josh - honorable mentions: the android security officer, & the deviant connor interogated.
having these characters be black was such a vital importance to the android revolution! i love how most of them were portrayed in the light considering the game came out in 2018, but how it's still influential - if not more, now that it's 2025. although most are good, there are a few controversial elements to some characters.
here's my analysis:
markus
whether you chose the android revolution in a pacifist or violent direction, the journey & the outcome would not have been as complex & meaningful if markus wasn't black.
especially since when you're choosing to tag or destroy public items while freeing other androids, one of the symbols you can choose to tag is one with a fist in the air. a symbol we all know and well belongs to the black lives matter movement. although the game came out in 2018 & blm didn't rise until 2020, it's still so powerful today that we got to see black man (black android) wave the flag & even at one point in the game get him & his fellow comrads to lift his fist while protesting. if markus was white i would've been disgusted LOL that is OUR symbol.
it was also interesting to see how markus ended up being the android's leader. you'd think that someone like north - who was violently abused, subjugated to oppression regardless of skin color would be leader. we see that in movies time and time again where a character's origin story is a violent one & rises the ranks to freedom.
not markus. he was raised with essentially peace in his heart & wanted his people to feel that.
i thought that was so fascinating that the creators of the game chose this as his upbringing to freedom. carl essentially raised markus as his own son. even tho he was bound by his program, carl would still chat with markus and ask personal questions - what did HE want to paint, what did HE think of something. it was beautiful. markus only knew the oppression from outsiders. like him in the beginning of the game running to the grocery store? i think? & when carl's dumb ass son came to push him around. & of course being thrown in the cyberlife dump. i thought it was honestly, a breathe of fresh air that a black character had a "normal" upbringing before it was taken away from them instead of being born into oppression. well, technically us american poc (i can't speak for non-americans but there are similarities), we are all born into oppression but knowing that even tho markus got treated like shit in streets, he was able to return home to love & safety instead of abuse.
although we got to view this crack of light in the dark with markus, unlike connor's mistreatment in the police department & to poor kara & alice suffering in domestic abuse, markus's "peace" was still a facade. carl might've treated markus kindly, but markus was still an android only there to be his caretaker. i do think markus did love him & wanted to take care of him but he still wanted & deserved more. i think carl's love was a gateway into markus breaking free (besides being forced to hold back from being pushed around by carl's son). his realization that he wished all humans were just as kind to him.
one last thing: the developers specifically chose to incorporate subtle but very noticeable details of black history that has happened in reality. like i mentioned before, with the fist flag, as well as, "we have a dream" tag, key words in his speeches & chants throughout the game - end slavery, equal rights, etc. imo, if markus hadn't been black & the developers casted a fucking white guy saying & doing all this stuff i would've been fucking LIVID LMAO it would've gave white players & even non black players this like false concept of oppression. especially since we all know how white ppl seem to only understand how oppression is bad & how it works through fictional pieces of media (hunger games for example) but then turn a blind eye to what goes on today or spits on minorities for being oppressed or "not doing it right".
jesse williams was a fantastic choice for markus especially since he used to be an american studies & african studies history teacher & very vocal about politics & activism to this day - (he's pro palestine!) the only con i have w markus's character is that he's lightskin LMAO mostly everybody else is darkskin (minus rose & lucy) & there's good darkskin rep but it could've been even better if he was dark. i'm lightskin too but yk there are dumb ass light skin black ppl - specifically black girls - that think colorism doesn't exist. but honestly, i'll take jesse williams bc what other black person - regardless of skin shade - do you even know that speaks up loud & proud about human rights & can reflect that into a character that's the same?? exactly. you'd be surprised by how many black ppl & other poc are either ignorant or stay silent. so, live laugh love jesse williams lol
rose & adam
i don't think i've ever seen anyone talk about rose - which honestly just proves my point of how important she was to kara & alice's story & why she had to be black.
quite a lot of ppl know that if you ever end up in trouble you can almost always count on a black woman to help you. specifically mothers & children. ppl who grow up in predom bipoc neighborhoods can & have tell you that some of them are taught that if you are out in the streets & you need help, you find a black woman.
that’s what rose is for kara & alice. their guardian angel. selfless. brave. human. yet she’s nobody.
black women are always subjected to be the source of help & receive nothing in return if they need it too. no recognition. no praise. thankfully this notion doesn’t apply in the game, kara thanks rose for her help & safety. (i do wish the game was longer to see maybe they got to live together in canada or something lol)
but outside of the game, nobody talks about rose. i personally have seen no one praise or bless this woman for helping kara & alice get to safety depending on the choices you make in the game. rose got them a roof over their head, food, multiple ways of transport, & even giving the girls law low info - seeking asylum with her brother.
if i was kara i would’ve been on my hands & knees in psychosis thinking rose was a goddess dropped from the sky lmao like rose gave EVERYTHING to those girls. put some damn respect & praise on my rose!
rose was also the only human that had no hatred for androids from the beginning & in the end. she even tells kara at their house when you ask why she’s helping that “my ppl were often made to feel their lives were worthless. some survived but only because they found others who helped along the way.” POWERFUL statement. notifying how the world treats black ppl in the past & still to this day. like are you not seeing how important & special that was to hear? that whole segway, kara & alice’s journey beyond that wouldn’t have been as emotional not just from that line but especially coming from a black woman. imagine if she weren’t & we would’ve gotten some vague line like “i just believe androids deserve a life too”
no. it’s bc rose & her son KNOW what kara & alice are going through. slavery, segregation, torture, genocide, the whole nine yards. rose knows from the soul. in a game like this we needed this representation bc our ppl KNOW. it’s in our blood & dna.
the only thing i dislike is the way they made her son adam. i’m not entirely sure why they made her son so adamant on leaving the androids behind. i thought it was because maybe the dad got killed by deviants but he died of cancer. so idek why adam would use his father as a reason as to why none of this would happen if he was still here. on top of that, his little punk ass nearly got them caught w the police! i’ve never seen a play-through where adam snitches so idk if that’s an option in the game but all together that scene had me STRESSED LOL
i understand his fear of going to prison but being raised by his mother & witnessing this revolution should’ve opened his eyes no? especially bc he’s a young black boy, but we know teenagers are naive & ignorant.
idk i didn’t like that bc i suppose it hits too close to home. how in 2025, young millennials & us older gen z are aware of the current political climate but younger gen z are ignorant or don’t care & of course gen alpha stunted in growth. it just wouldve been nice to seen teens fight for freedom too.
all in all, rose was such an important character & deserved the praise & recognition as much as hank did, even tho she didn’t build as much of a tight bond w kara.
luther
the gentle giant.
ppl always look at big black men as a threat. centuries of history, everybody knows that tall black men are subjected to just angry animalistic beasts. it was so important that luther was just as kind & sweet as kara is. his tone of voice was soft & sincere, even when he was stressed trying to escape with the girls. he was their protector. even alice’s father figure! i loved that scene where he kisses her goodnight :(
i do wish we could’ve gotten more out of of luther tho. with zlatko, he was just a bodyguard to wipe out zlatko’s enemies with no control to pull back. when luther broke free, in return he stayed with kara & alice but just ended up as their bodyguard - sort of in the same position. this time it was his choice, yes, but it also makes sense that he doesn’t know how to do anything else but protect. it was in his program.
kinda like kara in a way, where she was bought as a caretaker but became a mother - only being a caretaker is a job & being a mother is not only a payless job, but also an identity.
i feel like all the characters got to grow out of their past in a way but we didn’t get to see the same character development with luther. yes, he’s a side character, but we got to see the changes within north. luther is only used as a method of protection & sacrifice in the end whether he lives or dies. i wish we could’ve gotten to see what his answer would’ve been when alice asks kara what does she want to do when they’re free.
i loved that they made luther a giant teddy bear to protect the girls but he deserved depth too. he’s more than a guardian, he’s human too.
amanda stern
kamski's former mentor.
at first i thought kamski made amanda connor's visual model of his program's conscious out of guilt. i thought kamski & amanda had worked together creating & building cyberlife, then he stole her work & built cyberlife's name to himself but that's incorrect.
i've read that kamski created cryberlife in 2018 AFTER he graduated college at 16 & then built chloe in 2022 - creating the tech & biocomponents. it's unknown as to the reason as to why kamski resigned but it's believed that he had disagreed with the ppl at his company as it's alluded that kamski was well aware that androids could feel emotions - hence why he tells connor that there's an emergency exit in his programs - but his company probably wanted to stick with the profit androids make for humans. so my theory was wrong lol
then that leaves me with nothing but a positive eye for this. kamski must've adored amanda then. she was his mentor & teacher after all, plus considering he was only a child when he was in college & built this entire empire shortly after. he probably learned a lot from her & still wanted to carry on her memory after she died - 11 years prior from when the game is set.
i think it's refreshing to see an educated dark-skin black woman be praised & recognized for her work. it's not often you see women in general in positions of power if it's not underneath the guise of uplifting a man.
although, we all know amanda isn't exactly "kind" lol she's simply a program built for connor - used as a method to manipulate him into making decisions best to complete his mission. but the real amanda stern is long dead & clearly meant a lot to kamski.
although, i do wonder what connor had thought when he seen amanda's photo on the wall in kamski's place. knowing that she's dead but he still sees her when he's reporting updates of his progress of finding deviants.
i also wonder why only connor was able to have amanda as his conscience... maybe it's a classist thing? connor is not only a brand-new model (markus & connor are the same rk800 models) but he works for the government & certain precautions probably needed to be taken... hm... anyway
lucy
i'd consider lucy a visionary. with a simple touch, she could dive into markus's past & give him these prophetic-like lines of poetry along the path of his fate.
i love seeing black woman have a witchy role - providing knowledge for the masses although it is common for them to have profoundly tragic endings. her knowledge & her ending reminded me of annie from sinners. (i won't give spoilers)
i looked up lucy's backstory & turns out she was a psychologist! that is FASCINATING to me. a violent patient of hers had damaged her which is why she looks like that which is awful. but in return she found some type of way to predict the future.
science is magic & magic is science if you really think about it because how is she able to simply touch markus - presumably "downloading" or seeing all of his past memories to then calculate what could happen in the future? (yes, ik it's not real lmao just run with me here) but you as the player ultimately learn there's only 2 outcomes to the revolution - pacifist or violent - & she essentially warns & advises markus that it's his choices that affect everyone else. i think that's cool.
i wish we could get like an open world game of pre-android revolution detroit because i would love to see what it even looks like to witness an android psychologist giving professional advice to humans. it would be unbiased but they wouldn't be able to resonate or understand you personally
... actually nvm because thinking about it puts a bad taste in my mouth due to the rise of ai & ppl using chatgpt & shit for basic brain function & the consumption of water it takes to uphold that crap will be the downfall of our ecosystem & i don't like that. (fuck ai)
moving on...
josh
it was so intriguing to see josh pacifist - opposite of north who wanted violence. it's understandable north wished for violence but it is also understandable why josh wanted peace.
it's not often you see black men be labeled as peace makers. they're always subjected to violence in media - no brain, all brute strength with no regard for anything except themselves. angry at the world. in media they're always portrayed as that method getting them or someone else killed too but i like that this game portrays that even in the pacifist route, innocent ppl (androids) die.
josh shows markus time & time again that all he wants is for their ppl to be safe & free. i also think depending on who you kill off in your gameplay, josh can sacrifice himself for markus on some occasions too. which is just awful as i mention viewing loyalty down below. especially it giving markus more guilt & having to burden the blood on his hands, not just of his ppl but of his friends.
i actually kinda like the fact that markus had an angel vs demon on his shoulder trying - you as the player - to convince you on what path to choose.
i won't get into the pacifist vs violent route of the game since in reality, it honestly bleeds together as well as historically, violence being a necessary means to an end but nobody wants to talk about that. i digress lol
lastly, honorable mentions - the android security officer & the deviant connor interrogated.
small but mighty. also... collateral damage. these two are just really sad :(
depending on your gameplay, if simon dies, & you decide try to sacrifice markus during the first protest, the security officer from when you're stealing the bio-components will sacrifice himself by getting shot by the police so markus can escape. i thought that was powerful in itself bc i think it was heartbreaking to see loyalty in a situation like this. & also of course highlighting police brutality not just the overview of androids but the police brutality black ppl still face.
in movies or shows with prison or the justice system is involved & there are black characters, they'll always depict the friends as snitches & evidently turn against each other. so it's nice that even tho he didn't know markus personally like simon, he was a ride or die - literally. & not that i wished for him to die or for markus to sacrifice himself, but that in markus's playthrough he has his friends & ppl show unbreakable loyalty.
as for the android that connor interrogated, i just thought again how heartbreaking that whole ordeal was. it's a very rare thing for black men in media to portray vulnerability & trauma. i think regardless of your approach he tells you how his owner beat & burned him with cigs & how scared he was. i don't like that had happened to him but it was special to see that honesty & vulnerability especially since black men & boys are taught & prone to push abuse & feelings in general down until they explode. which evidently, is how he ended up murdering his abuser in the first place because he was bound by his program before he became deviant & snapped.
i'm also uncertain if regardless of connor's approach, this deviant kills himself, but either way it can also go to show how black ppl aren't taken seriously with their mental health & sometimes killing themselves are the only answer they find. idek his name but he definitely deserved to live & be free.
♡ ♡ ♡
all in all, yes, i'm aware androids aren't human & they probably don't see skin color, but it is OBVIOUS the developers incorporated black american history & it's elements for their characters & plotlines. & i find it absolutely beautiful & refreshing that for such an impactful game, it gave us some light for us black ppl to feel liberated on.
