White supremacy is exactly the key thing here.
Walsh for example is obsessed with the idea that the “white race” is at risk of “dying out,” playing into the antisemitic replacement conspiracy theory. This particular fearmongering has been spread by the likes of Tucker Carlson as well and was chanted at the Charlottesville neo-nazi/KKK rally. Walsh has also stated that the white race “lost” America at the Reconstruction (see the link): i.e. the era post-Civil War where Black people made strides in political clout and efforts were actually made by the government to right some of the wrongs of slavery. (This did not last long due to white backlash).
Now what does this racism and antisemitism have to do with queerness? Well… it’s a whole web of shit and bigotry BUT I do want to highlight a pair of things here.
1) Demonizing non-white cultures. In Refusing Compulsory Sexuality: A Black Asexual Lens on our Sex-Obsessed Culture, Sherronda J. Brown outlines how the nuclear family was set-up in-part to demonize the non-cisallohet culture norms of Black people; justifying slavery, subjugation, colonization, etc. This was also justification for violence against Indigenous people. They outline this far far better with more research than I can offer here.
2) White birth rates. During the Reconstruction (alongside an influx of immigrants, so xenophobia is a major factor here too), there was a fear that - now with Black people free and immigrants arriving - white people would be outnumbered. There was pressure to increase white birthrates to prevent such a catastrophe. There was a particular obsession with tomboy wombs being strong to birth many children. As outlined above, this replacement fearmongering is still present today.
Walsh has said himself he has no problem with teenage pregnancy, because that’s when girls most “most fertile.” His problem is with “unwed” pregnancies. i.e. …advocating for children to get married. (again, see the first Walsh link).
And if you read through so many of the anti-trans legislation being passed, so much of it was about the future ability of these children to give birth. This is why things like breast enhancements on teen girls or forced surgery on intersex children are never included in these bills.
Furthermore, those advocating against asexual or platonic marriages nowadays (yes, there’s actual lobbying happening), it’s because they all specifically define procreation as a critical part of marriage and family.
Shout out to the Ace Couple podcast for doing a four-episode series breaking down the various groups lobbying for this (transcripts of the episodes available at links as well).
One, this is a repetition of the argument against gay marriage; the inability* to procreate. Two, aromanticism and asexuality entirely* opt out of their marriage and sexual requirements.
Yes, there are ways for gay couples to have children, yes there are aro and ace people who get married, have sex, etc. And yes there are those of us who do actually want kids. But white supremacy isn’t thinking about the intricacies of our identities. We’re just a blanket threat to their precious white birthrates, to their power.
Which is a reminder that it’s also critical not just to have solidarity across queerness, but to also have solidarity across all intersections. We need to be invested in Black liberation, in Land Back, in Jewish freedom, in Muslim acceptance, in migrant/refugee rights, in fat liberation, in disability rights, in all of these places.
