this is not somebody i know personally, but IS someone dear to a friend of mine. if possible, it would be an amazing holiday gift to javon and his family and friends if you supported him. here is more information from the gofundme:

"Our dear friend Javon Mouzon, at just 20 years old, was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called a malignant acoustic neuroma at the beginning of the year. This cancer is spreading to other parts of his brain, including his hearing and cognitive functions.

The cancer is mostly affecting the left side of his body, including his left ear, resulting in him losing about 80% of his hearing in that ear. Due to where the cancer is located, it can cause him to be off balance, making it difficult for him to walk. This has also affected his left eye, in which he is slowly losing sight. He has also regularly experienced seizures and severe headaches, which can affect his day-to-day routine, ability to work, and play music. Javon also suffers from memory loss and is at a high risk for aneurysms.

For the last eleven months, Javon has been undergoing treatment, which includes chemotherapy. While undergoing this treatment, he has been working 40-hour workweeks and working on music gigs when he has the time. Though at times this isn’t enough, and due to his financial situation, he has often had to sell his belongings to make ends meet.

Recently, doctors have discovered that cancer has begun to spread to the occipital nerve and other parts of his brain, which can affect his cognitive function and depth perception. As this cancer has progressed, these side effects have worsened; he has been taking chemotherapy and Lamictal for seizures. For the better part of a year, the cancer had been stabilizing until recently, when his doctors discovered it had begun to spread once again. The doctor is now requesting that Javon receive surgery, as the cancer will continue to spread and make his condition even worse, and if he does not receive this surgery, he will only have about one year to live.

Once Javon undergoes surgery, he will need a significant amount of assistance to help maintain his home and body while he recovers from his surgery; Having added and estimated his total finances together, we have determined that he will have trouble supporting himself financially, as he will be unable to perform his job and even regular functions for some time as the recovery period will last about six to eight weeks in the hospital, and once he is released, will have to undergo physical therapy for about four to five months.

This time period will be detrimental to Javon's financial responsibilities, and this surgery will have an overall lasting effect on him. We ask for your support and help during these times to help our beloved friend maintain a good quality of life. These funds will help him pay for many of his expenses, as well as support for his medical bills. We thank you for all your support and well wishes, and we will continue to help Javon with this endeavor as much as possible."

You should be able to apply for student aid on your own at any age.

And yes, yes, ideally healthcare and college should be free, international migration should be unrestricted, and the entire concept of legal parenthood should be rewritten from the ground up. But right now we're talking about marriage benefits.

For some families it became a mark of economic success and social status to have the wife concentrate on homemaking. But even for low-income families, who typically needed more than one wage earner, it made economic sense for the wife to stay home once the children were old enough to take jobs. A full-time housewife’s work at home could usually save a family more than she could earn in wages.

As the division between a husband’s wage-earning activities and a wife’s household activities grew, so too did the sense that men and women lived in different spheres, with the man’s sphere divorced from domesticity and the woman’s divorced from the “economy.” A historian of the German Enlightenment writes that in earlier centuries, when economic production was still centered in the household, “domesticity was a virtue shared by males and females, a shorthand term for thrift, hard work, and order.” Advice books in the late seventeenth century still urged husbands as well as wives to practice domesticity. But “a century later, domesticity had tumbled out of the constellation of masculine virtues.”

At the same time, women’s traditional tasks—growing food for the family table, tending animals, dairying, cooking, repairing household implements, and making clothes—though no less burdensome, were no longer viewed as economic activities. In the older definition of housekeeping, women’s labor was recognized as a vital contribution to the family’s economic survival. Wives were regularly referred to as “helps-meet” and “yoke mates.” But as housekeeping became “homemaking,” it came to be seen as an act of love rather than a contribution to survival.

“For all its value within households, . . .” writes American historian Catherine Kelley, “women’s labor was radically undervalued in the world of cash transactions.” Homemakers, now cut off from the sphere of the cash economy, became more dependent on their husbands financially. Women’s diaries in the early nineteenth century reflect a new self-doubt about the worth of their contributions to the household economy, even while recording their huge amounts of unpaid work tending livestock, carding wool, sewing clothes, churning butter, hauling wood, cooking, and putting up preserves.
