I feel like the only person not tempted to use ChatGPT like it doesn't even occur to me as an option
Anyway shoutout to the person next to me who just got GPT to do their whole essay. I know you're in the trenches.
Feeling old yet? Breaking Bad ended in the year 1890.
waldrip and jessimer synthesizing laudanum:
"why do you know that" i am curious about the world around me
do you guys want to know one of the coolest things ever btw. i'm going to tell you either way i just like to give you the illusion of choice
when anteaters find an anthill they don't just stick their face in and slurp with reckless abandon. they leave behind enough ants to rebuild the ant society and also don't eat queens. they're not just hunting the ants they are essentially farming them. isn't that the coolest
if you reblog this post without my anteater fact i hate you. it's the most important part.
Accepting identities I don't understand is actually extremely easy because I just go "this isn't about me" and move on with my life unbothered by someone else's identity, it's truly that simple.
shrimps is bugs
not to be a pessimist on the main blog, but i struggle with the fact that even the most radical leftists i know have almost all gone back to life as usual without wearing masks in public. people who I've sat in community with and talked about changing the world, just to see them not change a tiny aspect of their life to protect vulnerable people.
yes, we've been structurally failed on every level of this pandemic. and also yes, i can't take someone seriously in their ideals and morals if wearing a goddamn mask in public was too much for them. i could rant about this more but I'll just get upset lol.
please wear a mask if you've stopped doing so.
people in the notes who want to try justifying why they stopped wearing masks: this post isn't the place for you to do that, babes. it is straight up unethical not to wear a mask in closed, public quarters, and if it makes you feel bad to hear that, well. sorry. deal with those feelings on your own time.
i know shame doesn't work as a motivator and i am truly not trying to shame anyone. at the same time, there's a special kind of horror i feel at the fact that we've been told by experts that masking can help to save lives, especially the lives of disabled folks, and most people collectively have shrugged and gone "ehhhh no thanks. you see, it's slightly inconvenient for me."
wear a fucking mask, please.
not to mention its genuinely baffling how few people care about getting sick anymore. people in the comments saying that if other people aren't wearing a mask it doesn't matter because it doesn't protect you - if you are wearing a well-fitted KN95 or N95 YES IT DOES. It's not guaranteed but the likelyhood of you getting sick drops radically if you are wearing a damn mask correctly.
And for every person that wears a mask the risk for everyone else decreases slightly, if you wear a mask even if you aren't guaranteed prevention you are preventing from being the person who gets another person sick, whether you know it or not. I've been consistently masking anytime i'm inside (except for eating, I'll admit) and knocking on wood I've yet to get it after years.
I wear a mask because if I get sick I likely wouldn't know before I've been in close quarters with other people at the store or outside, and I do not want to be the reason why someone else gets sick. Because if you don't do even the barest of bare minimums to prevent spreading an illness it IS actually your fault if someone gets it from you, in my opinion.
make it a part of your lifestyle to give a shit about your own health and the health of people around you in a way that is BARELY an inconvenience.
I was carrying a pack of paper towels back to my apartment. I set them down to reorganize the things in my arms and when I turned around there was a beast on my towels. I do not own or recognize the beast.
The beast wailed at me until I was forced to caress it.
Sometimes I’m looking for something online - often “how to” articles - and I want to filter for - like - a website that was clearly built in 2010 at the latest, which may or may not have been updated since then, but contains a vast wealth of information on one topic, painstakingly organized by an unknown legend in the field with decades’ worth of experience. I don’t want a listicle with a nice stolen picture in a slideshow format written by a content aggregator that God forgot. I want hand-drawn diagrams by some genius professor who doesn’t understand SEO at all, but understands making stir-fries or raising stick insects better than anyone else on this earth. I don’t know what search settings to put into Google to get this.
thank you for articulating this cri de coeur for me
ngl these days i’m just happy when it’s not a video
search.marginalia.nu is the search engine you want!
The search engine calculates a score that aggressively favors text-heavy websites, and punishes those that have too many modern web design features.
This is in a sense the opposite of what most major search engines do, they favor modern websites over old-looking ones. Most links you find here will be nearly impossible to find on a regular search engine, as they aren’t sufficiently search engine optimized.
“It is a search engine, designed to help you find what you didn’t even know you were looking for. If you search for “Plato”, you might for example end up at the Canterbury Tales. Go looking for the Canterbury Tales, and you may stumble upon Neil Gaiman’s blog.
If you are looking for fact, this is almost certainly the wrong tool. If you are looking for serendipity, you’re on the right track. When was the last time you just stumbled onto something interesting, by the way?
I don’t expect this will be the next “big” search engine. This is and will remain a niche tool for a niche audience.“
i clicked around for a few minutes searching various things and I now have two fourteenth century pie crust recipes and an apple filling recipe i want to try, so thanks!
it has been twenty minutes and I am deeply in love with this search engine.
INCREDIBLE. I *do* want to know how to test Windows 95 for Y2K Compliance and I am glad that someone is still hosting step by step instructions for that.
tl;dr: search.marginalia.nu for the old or old looking and just plain serendipitous stuff that google or Duck duck go are gonna not find/bury on the 20th page. For perfectly good reasons, but …
My absolute favorite part of having made this post - other than causing people to be introduced to this site - are the people in the tags/comments talking about their interests and stuff they found about their hobbies.
Good luck out there surfing the cyberweb, you crazy cats. I love the shoelace website too - Ian’s Shoelace Site [link], unless there’s another. My personal favorite old-school site is Alysion’s string figure collection [link].

Can you talk about smoking weed on here because that’s what I’m about to do
Well well well if it isn’t my own mental illness coming to mentally ill me.
One must imagine Sisyphus had infinite spoons.

i’m just a little cat. thank you.
you do not have permission to stop caring about vampires just because october is over btw. vampires are a year round event
This is the most pathetic thing I’ve ever seen and I saw the Sherlock fandom come up with the Johnlock Conspriacy after season 4.
To be somewhat serious on my shitpost, I think what we’re seeing here is someone who is entirely unaware they are in a filter bubble.
After Trumps election, there was a lot of talk about left wing filter bubbles and it wasn’t unwarranted. But right wing filter bubbles exist too, and if the list of who Musk is following is any indication, he’s pretty much consuming only right wing talking heads who think the transphobic helicopter joke is the height of comedy.
I think, and I can’t know this for sure obviously, that there is this impression in that sphere that people aren’t saying offensive shit that upsets people at large because they’re afraid of some “woke mob.” I don’t think it has honestly occurred to them that a large portion of folks do it because they want to be considerate to other people. And so we see this sort of messaging where Musk views himself as a liberator to the masses when he’s really only an asshole announcing he can now piss in the public square.
Also I think it's important to recognize that he's not just another celebrity with too much money who has shitty opinions on trans people:
He's that too, but he has a trans daughter. He isn't just arbitrarily hating trans people disconnected from any reality, he's doing shit that will hurt HIS FUCKING CHILD.
Keep that in mind when you're calibrating how much you should dislike this shitlord.
