SG-1 Rodney: huge creep, giant ego, insufferable, I'd like to take him out myself. Right between the eyeballs.

Atlantis Rodney: just a little guy, tries to do good, still has an ego but grows as a character, would protect him with my life.

I think this shows growth in Rodney’s character. That interacting with brilliant people who ARENT aasholes and seeing them get along put him in his place a lot. I also think people not taking his nonsense helped a lot a well.

(I’m sure when he was stuck in Eastern Europe and Antarctica it was very real that no one was going to put up with his blustering rude loud ego. And had to start to change.)

I feel like Sam and the rest of SG-1 (incl Hammond) were some of the first people to be like, “no actually you AREN’T the best in this equation.” Rodney was baffled every time someone didn’t back down from him. Probably because people up till now told him yes and praised his work. Academia vs real life.

Then on Atlantis Rodney gets on THE gate team. Famously Sg-1 are all friends, no matter their fusses or qualms with each other. But he quickly finds out, to have friends you have to work on yourself a little. Collaborate, listen, and be empathetic, things he is all classically horrible at.

Yes he is still bad at it, his ego is still LOUD but he does start to listen to others opinions. His want/need for Sheppard to be his friend, I think was a big factor in how hard he tried on Atlantis to be more of a person.

I think McKay had grown more than a lot of characters on SGA. I would have liked to see how they progressed with him in the show.

A nice foil for McShep honestly. Who are a little messy (affectionate), but have the heart mostly in the right place. Loud argumentative and Demanding. Like wild young love.

While Lorne and Zelenka are like years down the line when you really trust someone. Friendly banter and arguments but overall comforted by each other and value what they each think. Love grown in patience and work.
