Jax likes Gangle better sad. I'd say Jax probably intentionally makes her sad on purpose by being mean to her. Neither of these are new information. However.

Gangle is the sad ARCHETYPE, which explains why he absolutely needs her to be sad all the time, why he constantly breaks her happy mask, why he's so invested in her misery. Now. Take this and put it into one of the few times he was being genuine- the stargazing scene.

He wanted to know if being around Zooble could make her happy because in his mind Gangle can't be happy. But he also genuinely wondered if she had the capacity for joy and happiness, he was looking to see if there was a way she broke out of the archetype he set in place for her. He was genuinely curious to see if she still had her HUMANITY with her or if he's right and they're all just "part of the machine" now.

One more thing. "She likes it when I'm mean to her, though"... He thought this honestly, let's say. Because why? Because he mentally (force-)fits himself into his archetype because it's more comfortable for him. And he gets VIOLENTLY uncomfortable when someone pushes at his archetype and tries to drag him out of it, he gets so upset he self-destructs and takes down everyone else in his vicinity. Obviously, that's not very pleasant. So, logically, in his mind the "right thing to do" would be to help Gangle confine herself to sadness. He was pushed out of his comfort zone, and he hated it. He made up a comfort zone for her that fit his perception of her, and he's helping her stay within it. Ergo, he imagines she likes it when he's mean to her.

WHICH IS PEAK CHARACTER WRITING HOLY SHIT this guy. So much analysis. I can't take all the analysis. I love this so much.

Jax adamantly states that Pomni shooting him would be the funniest thing to do when in fact the entire situation they've put themselves in is nothing but upsetting. He's smiling wide in an attempt to be the funny and carefree character he thinks he needs to be, but in reality it's just off-putting and frightening. He's in her face, forcing her to aim, demanding that she kill him.

He wants an out from the conversation Pomni is forcing him to have, but leaving or walking away would prove that he's hurt, uncomfortable, or irritated. It would prove that he still has feelings.

i don't think he even realized how much he fucked up being "the funny one" in this situation. he could've recovered from the brief awkward moment of him pushing pomni away by just feigning naïvete before "betraying pomni" for the adventure. a simple, fake "i don't know what you're talking about" (to cover up the fact he was too engrossed on her hug) and when pomni lets her guard down after his typical gaslight shenanigans, BLAM! SHOOT! and he technically would've avoided that conversation while keeping the Funny One act. the only problem was that—other than leaving or walking away—there is no actual way to cover his feelings up.

he already opened up to her, egged her on to step out of her comfort zone, laughed with her, and if they end things on a good note... it shows he cares. the thing is, the mutual betrayal scene would've made him live up to his Funny One act. it's a classic final showdown a lot of plots have. it was set up to live to ideal cartoon plot.

but instead, he just told pomni to shoot him without anything up his sleeve. no mischievous behavior, no trickery, no nothing. he didn't realize he just broke his own ideology about playing an archetype, because at the end of the day, and what we've already seen with the whole cast, they're all humans with feelings deep down. he unintentionally disproved his whole ideology.

this is great. amazing. i am already rocking back and forth in a corner waiting for the next episode.

Losing my mind watching people not understand why Jax treated Pomni like that, yes he was awful to her, yes he absolutely said things he shouldn't, but he's VERY BLATANTLY self isolating, he's not being a dick for dick's sake, he's BLATANTLY trying to villainize himself to Pomni so Pomni leaves, but she is able to correctly call him out for the fact he's lying because he's scared of the fact he let her in even a little, and while Pomni doesn't have to take it, it's clear she is unsatisfied with the narrative Jax is clinging to and is wanting to push Jax out of that comfort zone because she sees the damage it's doing to everyone including him.

It's sloppy and messy and bad for them, but it's not Pomni being helplessly gaslit, Jax isn't trying to subtly manipulate her, he's trying to self harm with her, he's literally trying to get her to shoot him in the head without him fighting back. He's hurting himself on her to make her leave and to make him not want to reach out to her.

Which is still again, unhealthy as fuck, but in a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT way to just Jax being a manipulative jerk and the fact she doesn't seem to want to give up isn't a sign of jax "winning" or "manipulating her" it's her seeing through his bullshit and going "nope, you are a person, a terrified angry person lashing out, and i dont have to take this, i wont let you walk over me, and i won't let you do this to yourself unchallenged."
