We don’t talk enough about how fanfiction writers love to give character large amounts of non-specific paperwork they hate doing
say more pls
Yeah sure why not.
So most stories take place when Events are Happening, and this means that no matter what kind of job the characters have, they’re probably not too focused on them. Fanfics, on the other hand, often show the down time. Which means that the writer has to figure out what the hell these characters do in their jobs. Unless the characters have a job the author understands or knows well, the author is often at a loss for what to have the character doing.
So they sit them at a desk and give them paperwork. What is the paperwork for? Rarely specified. It is Paper Work for the characters Important Adult Job they have and they need to read or sign it or something. And there’s always a line about how Character Hates Paperwork. Doesn’t matter if Character is a Mafia Boss or a General or a Diplomat, here they are in an office trying to get out of Doing Paperwork.
There’s also a sense of, like, humor and mundanity that comes with it. Like the examples above, it always particularly stands out to me when a dangerous individual is griping about some paper they need to sign or something. The less you can picture Character doing paperwork, all the better to force it upon them. If Character is saddled with Paperwork, they’re usually now concerned about the physical damages their motley crew causes, because damage = More Paperwork.
Anyway I just think it’s fun or funny, Sephiroth doing paper work and Sawada Tsunayoshi doing paper work and this just in, Tony Stark is doing paperwork. Sorry, Phoenix Wright can’t play right now. Yeah, it’s paperwork.
A very non-exhaustive list of actual paperwork they could be completing/reviewing/approving, in no particular order:
Timesheets
Expense reports
Requisition requests
Budget justifications
Payroll
Performance evaluations
Incident reports
After action reviews / post-mortem analyses
Incident Action Plans
Contracts
Contract proposals / grant applications
Reports / briefings
Your Royalty or Nobles in your feudal society should be doing this constantly unless you want to show how they're losing the kingdom and about to be usurped or overthrown.
petitions, speech-writing, complaints, requests, assignations, disputes, judiciary forms, declarations that need signing off on, matters requiring the Royal seal, matters requiring a royal endorsement, pardons, judgments, invitations, rebuttals, census data, crop yields projected or actual, livestock records, water rights, Sumptuary laws, taxes taxes taxes...
oh my god I wrote like 36 chapters of Dragon Age post-Inquisition fanfic where Varric is stuck under a mountain of paperwork in Kirkwall for like 30 of those chapters what is wrong with me.
Perhaps they ought not to have eaten the dragon. There had been people objecting to it at the time. Surely such meat was poisonous. Perhaps it was even an affront, an insult to some intangible order of nature they ought to honour.
But the city was starving, the siege had gone on too long, and the king's troops were still a week's march away. The scorched earth would be fertile again in time, but right now it was barren. Right now there were mouths to feed. So they changed their crossbows for butcher knives and got to work.
None of the royal commanders asked any questions that could not be answered. After all, their aid had come shamefully late. The dragon's horned skull made a noble gift, a fitting tribute from a triumphant city to its humbled king. Who would have thought to question them?
And none of the townsfolk spoke up, when the first golden-eyed babes were born. Children who grew up barefoot and fearless, clambering over the city's patched and rebuilt roofs like they had no notion of falling, with a strange glitter to their skin when the sunlight hit it just so. No one breathed a word about dragons.
Because soon enough there were deft, young hands taking loaves straight out of the oven, heedlessly lifting iron from the forge, plunging into boiling laundry water. And some of them more wondrous still, wild, warm-skinned youths, with inexplicable knowledge and peculiar remedies.
A blessing, their families said proudly. A blessing after so much hardship. Which it was, in its way. This city would never fear dragon fire again.
even if you're resigned that trump is going to win, 1/3 of the country lives in states with competitive senate elections. if democrats win the senate, there is very little that trump can do (can't even appoint supreme court nominees)
the following states all have competitive senate elections:
arizona
florida
maryland
michigan
montana
nevada
ohio
pennsylvania
texas
wisconsin
even if you don't think your state is competitive at all, THESE SENATE RACES STILL ARE, SO IF YOU LIVE IN ONE OF THESE STATES, MAKE SURE TO VOTE
and even if you don't live in one of those states, you could live in a competitive house seat. if democrats win the house, then trump can't pass any bills
and even if you don't live in a competitive state or district, your local elections matter even more than federal ones because they have a much more direct impact on your life
so VOTE VOTE VOTE VOTE VOTE VOTE VOTE
Every state is a competitive state if we get out the vote enough. They've flipped before and they'll flip again. Vote vote vote!
In your opinion, are people born in 1998 millennials or Gen Z?
I was born in 1998 and I think we're a unique combination
I was born in 1998 and I think we're millennials
I was born in 1998 and I think we're gen Z
I was born in 1998 and I don't care about this
I'm a millennial NOT born in 1998 and I think they're millennials
I'm a millennial NOT born in 1998 and I think they're gen Z
I'm gen Z NOT born in 1998 and I think they're millennials
I'm gen Z NOT born in 1998 and I think they're gen Z
I'm from a different generation and I think they're millennials
I'm from a different generation and I think they're gen Z
I was NOT born in 1998 and I don't care about this
Infinitely nuanced answer
Add in the tags where YOU think the cutoff for millennial/gen z is!

ykno the thing about poetry is that 99% of it is bullshit and the other 1% will cut you like a material knife, and for every person that 1% is a different section of the whole. this is probably true about all art.
@sashayed these tags feeling pretty materially knifey for me
Making every other fantasy race except for humans a monoculture isn't just lazy, but actively robbing yourself of a wealth of story depth. Give them cultures with distinct nuances about things a human would have no idea about. Elves whose invisible and extremely nuanced cultural cues are not only incredibly subtle, but vary from one elven line to another, so something that would be considered a remarkably tactful and delicate choice in one elven house would be an atrocious insult in another.
Goblin clan feuds about The Sacred Bug - they all agree that this specific species of beetle is sacred to the Goblin Gods, but the question is whether it is taboo to eat it, or whether it would be blasphemy to not eat this bug that was specifically gifted to goblinkind by the gods. Can You Eat The Bug -wars are torrid affairs that can last generations. There's a theory that there are two different goblin gods who appear as the same one, and have deliberately given their own respective clans contradictory instructions about the bug just to fuck with them. Everyone who has ever asked a goblin about this theory has been bit.
Dwarves who have different regional measures for different ground depths. There's a confusion within a construction crew digging a new tunnel with some of the foreign builders using words like "first cracks deep" for something that's not a measure that's in use in the dwarvish universal metric system. And then it turns out that different dwarves from different areas are used to different kinds of bedrock that cracks at different levels, and they also disagree with each other about how deep is "first cracks deep".
And the Mason Master of the projct throws his pickaxe in the tunnel wall in frustration and goes "alright the next one of you to say some utter fucking hillbilly bullshit gets their ass beat so bad that your mother's beard falls off."
Unrestrained summer fun 😁
this must be such a delicate experience for a creature that can dive two stories deep and has been seen cliff diving into the ocean
Such a quiet and gentle experience for a megafauna cryptid that can headbutt a speeding truck and walk away It’s like seeing Godzilla in a kiddie pool
During a summer heat wave in Alaska growing up (yes it’s a thing), my dad had several sprinklers and a tractor sprinkler going in the yard. From the woods behind the house suddenly came two young babies and a very large mother.
They came directly towards the tractor sprinkler and sat right down.
My dad verrrrry slowly pulled the hose of the other sprinklers, and repositioned them in the backyard so they would spray grass under the shade of several trees.
Lo and behold, the mother moose got up, walked over to the water now pooling beside these trees, and plomped down. The two babies followed after and just fell over in the cool water.
Damn what if you told your dad he mispronounced a word during a zoom meeting and he disowned you for embarrassing him and told you you were only welcome back home if you found bigfoot so you spend three years travelling the world to find bigfoot but along the way you become friends with bigfoot and teach him how to fight so he beats up your dad for you
I don't think you would have to teach Bigfoot how to fight
Only bigfoot, master of fighting, could stop my father, but when the world needed him most, he vanished. A hundred years passed and I rediscovered the bigfoot. And although his fighting skills are great, he has a lot to learn before he's ready to save anyone. But I believe bigfoot can kill my dad
Even Biden supporters want this motherfucker gone like what are we doing here?
“you’re a writer, right?”
me, staring at the one sentence i’ve managed to add in the last hour and the 12 open tabs on the specifics of shoes in 1845 Ireland: In theory.
being younger than everyone else on this site is so funny because someone will be like "anyone remember the glinky glork" and i look up the glinky glork and it happened when i was 2
"where were you at dashcon" i was learning my abcs 👶
important addition from the elders
I just had this thought but people should talk to each other more on ao3
There are more than enough long thinkpieces about why so few people leave comments on fanfiction but they always felt like they were missing something.
We seem to have curated a culture where the only interaction you can have on a story is:
brief review of the story/saying you liked it -> creator thanking you for commenting
Don’t get me wrong, this is a perfectly good exchange and I love getting these comments, it’s just WILD that it’s only expected interaction.
The most common reason for me not commenting is that somebody else has already said what I think & it’s surprising that it’s taken me this long to realise I can just. agree with them. The reply button exists for everyone not just the author.
Also I feel like people would be more inclined to leave detailed comments if they believe they can get attention for it. Sure the author responding is nice, but lots of people publicly agreeing with your insight would go a long way.
Basically I just think we should do more “yes and..” when it comes to fanwork engagement.
Leaving a comment right now feels like starting a conversation with an artist you admire & as much as we can give reassurance about that it’s still a scary thing to do.
Joining an ongoing conversation with people on the same footing (if it was normalised) would almost definitely be an easier starting point you know? Just a thought
what the fuck do they put in those little fucking dipping sauces that come with pizzas that literally do not exist anywhere else I KNOW ITS SOME KIND OF GARLIC HERB SITUATION BUT ITS NOT JUST GARLIC HERB SOUS

quick reminder that it’s ok to say that you love reading and that reading is your passion without reading 30+ books in a year. if you connect with books and love the power of the written word, you’re bookish. you don’t need to justify your love of reading.
Yay, unsolicited advice time! Or, not really advice, more like miscellaneous tips and tricks, because if there's one thing eight years of martial arts has equipped me to write, it's fight scenes.
.
Fun things to add to a fight scene (hand to hand edition)
It's not uncommon for two people to kick at the same time and smack their shins together, or for one person to block a kick with their shin. This is called a shin lock and it HURTS like a BITCH. You can be limping for the rest of the fight if you do it hard enough.
If your character is mean and short, they can block kicks with the tip of their elbow, which hurts the other guy a lot more and them a lot less
Headbutts are a quick way to give yourself a concussion
If a character has had many concussions, they will be easier to knock out. This is called glass jaw.
Bad places to get hit that aren't the groin: solar plexus, liver, back of the head, side of the thigh (a lot of leg kicks aim for this because if it connects, your opponent will be limping)
Give your character a fighting style. It helps establish their personality and physicality. Are they a grappler? Do they prefer kicks or fighting up close? How well trained are they?
Your scalp bleeds a lot and this can get in your eyes, blinding you
If you get hit in the nose, your eyes water
Adrenaline's a hell of a drug. Most of the time, you're not going to know how badly you've been hurt until after the fact
Even with good technique, it's really easy to break toes and fingers
Blocking hurts, dodging doesn't
.
Just thought these might be useful! If you want a more comprehensive guide or a weapons edition, feel free to ask. If you want, write how your characters fight in the comments!
Have a bitchin day <3
