Introduction

Hey y'all I’m new to exmuslim community here on tumblr and I just wanted to say hi and tell you guys a bit about me. I’m 16, Somali, living in the USA and have been exmuslim for maybe a year and a half. Apparently, even when it comes to his own ancestry, Erdogan is a total schizophrenic. There is no proof whatsoever of him having Pontian roots. Even if he does have some Georgian ancestry, which he denies quite fervently, it is at most assumed that his ancestors assimilated into Ottoman Turkey generations ago, meaning he never lived in a Georgian background or held Georgian values.

So basically, there might be some slim chance of him having Georgian roots, but he never got in touch with them. Oh also he’s a Turkish nationalist.

Ergo, he is a Turk. End of story.

And even if he were 0% Turk, which believe me is not the case, he’s still trying to destroy minorities, neighboring countries and foreigners in general. His great-great-grandfather’s birthplace doesn’t change that.

Those are just a few basic examples of how ethnic and religious minorities live in Turkey under Erdogan’s regime. Not only does his government restrict their rights, but he encourages attacks on civilians by demonizing them - calling Greeks and Cypriots animals and infidels, referring to Kurds as dangerous thieves, insulting Georgians and Armenians and inciting mistrust for Jews.

Erdogan is a threat to minorities and political dissidents. Anyone who denies that is blatantly excusing the genocides, wars, massacres and hate crimes they have been facing for centuries.

What exactly are you playing at? Greek soldiers were occupying Smyrna in 1922 because the Great Fire, carried out by the Turkish army and nationalist organizations on command of the government, had already killed nearly a million Greeks. The Ottoman Empire conducted a nine-year-long genocide against Greeks of Asia Minor.

Not to mention that Smyrna was part of the land that had legally been promised to Greece by the Allied Forces after World War I based on the Treaty of Sèvres. You know, that treaty that was signed after the Ottomans enabled German and Austro-Hungarian forces and aided the genocide of Armenians, Greeks, Assyrians, Serbs, and other ethnic groups.  

I mean you do realize you’re basically saying “well sure the Turkish army burned down the homes of almost every Greek in Smyrna and Ayvali, sent them on death marches, starved and worked them to death, raped the girls and women, slaughtered the boys and men, intentionally murdered them in front of their families, mutilated their corpses, destroyed their churches, stole their property, and forced them out of their rightful homes, for almost a decade, but evil Greeks captured Smyrna for 15 months!”

I mean, if that’s what you want to talk about, I can go further than the Great Fire of Smyrna and the Pontian Genocide. Maybe we can talk about 1974. How the Church of Cyprus legalized abortion because Turkish soldiers raped hundreds girls and women from 12 to 70 multiple times, to the point of insanity. Or would you prefer to talk about how they murdered 6-month-old babies in front of their parents?

As a young girl, I wanted to have six or more kids. Like my ambition and goal in life was to procreate. In my mind, my fertility equalled my success as a woman and that it was also my sole purpose.  And I am pretty sure I am not the only girl who has thought this and it makes me wonder how many brilliant and wonderful minds are being ignored and locked away because procreation is seen as a woman’s ultimate success.

I was raised in an extremely religious Muslim household where girls are taught to be mothers to the future generations of little Muslims, where higher education is not always encouraged, where many of my classmates were married off between the ages of 15-18, where women who don’t have children are seen as being defective, where if a woman has children and works she is seen as a terrible mother and bad example.

So no, this is not #feministstupidity or me projecting my insecurities, this is showing how I have overcome years of religious brainwashing. It shows that I know now that if I don’t have children, it doesn’t mean I am a defective, terrible failure of a woman. It shows that I know that I am more than just a womb. It also shows to my many female exmuslim followers that these feelings are completely normal and that they are not defined by the religious brainwashing they have endured.

I am not projecting my issues onto other women. I am bringing awareness of the struggles that ExMuslim women face on a level they can relate to. My tumblr is dedicated to the ExMuslim cause which sadly is a cause that is often ignored. I speak up about my experiences growing up in a Muslim household and I speak up against all the oppression that exmuslim women face which include being silenced by the very people they need support from.  I am sorry that you spend your time trawling through #feminist and just assumed you were justified in attacking me without actually developing an understanding of where I was coming from or my background simply because I dared to use the word feminist in a tag.  I agree with you when you state that feminists that support things like Sharia and adopt a pro-Muslim mentality are worrying. They are the very people that are silencing people like me. They shut us down every time we try to raise awareness when we actually speak the truth about a very dangerous religion. They accuse us of being anti-women, islamophobes, liars and bigots. They ridicule our experiences and refuse to see us as who we really are, which is victims and survivors.  From what I gather, you are very against the current Western Feminism that is spreading like wildfire and in some aspects, I am too. But you need to understand that whilst you may live a very comfortable life where you have that ability to choose, many women in Third World Countries are not afforded the same privilege and they need a feminist movement. I am so very happy that your sister has been able to live a life completely of her choosing because sadly MANY ExMuslim and Muslim women are not afforded the same luxury. I am finally able to live a life of my choosing. I am now able to choose who I want to marry, if I want to have children or not, what I do for work but I had to fight for my freedom. So when I say I was raised believing that motherhood was the only purpose for my life, I am saying that my own mother said that I didn’t need to receive even the most basic education because why would I need it?  Many Muslim and ExMuslim women who I speak with and live all over the world have said similar things. Also, how dare you make light of the terrible experiences I have faced by saying that I “have merely only traded one religion for another”? Even if I was a staunch feminist or a “radfem”, which I am not, it is still a hell of a lot better than a religion that is literally calling for me to be whipped, stoned and finally executed.  Perhaps you should stop projecting your issues and go educate yourself.

As a South Asian American feminist, let me remind everyone that oppression is not a competition.

Just because we fight one type of sexism doesn’t mean we don’t care about other instances of sexism that don’t affect us directly in our day to day lives.

My heart goes out to this woman and the hundreds of other victims like her. I want to educate people about these kinds of incidents. I support organizations that help women like this.

You may think that dress code issues are trivial, but they are related to a larger issue of women’s bodily autonomy, which affects women’s health and safety.

So please, let’s try to bring awareness and bring about change instead of insulting entire groups of people because they are facing issues that are less scary than the one presented.

Every time someone, usually a guy, complains about feminists not experiencing oppression, I can’t help but see what they are really trying to say.

“This is how men could be treating you, be grateful it’s only as bad as it is now.”

And that’s actually an attribute of abusers, I believe I read somewhere. To compare you to someone being treated worse and tell you you should be grateful you have it so good. It convinces the victim they should be silent in the face of their abuse.

It’s literally an abuse tactic. 

Every time someone says something like, “You […] have never experienced oppression, and pray you never do, because this is what it looks like.” What they are saying is, “shut up, we could treat you worse if we wanted to.”

Just a quicke life update

My mom tried to beat me but I pushed her and ran away but I'm back home now. I got into university but not the ones I wanted so I'm a little sad. But the point is 100% leaving in a few months.
