Introduction
Hey y'all Iâm new to exmuslim community here on tumblr and I just wanted to say hi and tell you guys a bit about me. Iâm 16, Somali, living in the USA and have been exmuslim for maybe a year and a half. I left because I realized that I will probably never end up in heaven as is and for a god to condemn people who are unaware to the religion to suffering forever is just wrong. Iâm currently waiting to turn 18, leave for uni a couple hours away and play double life to keep the fam happy. Thatâs pretty much it. I hope all you guys the best~
Wow it's been 2 years! How time flies. Not going to lie, I thought shit was tough then-I had no fucking clue what was coming. But now I'm just about to taste the fruits of my labor and I'm hella excited.
On a less serious note
When I stop wearing hijab and dressing modestly Iâm honestly so fucked. I donât know what the fuck to do with my hair and shaving is completely beside me. Makeup is a whole another battle. Sweet fucking Christ at least those will be my problems instead of things I have to deal with now.
Update y'all. I figured out how to beat my face, apparently I don't need to shave (practically no body hair-at least my parents gave me something useful) and I cut my own hair and it's alright. I'm one month away from going to college/university for you U.K. Folks. I'm not going to my first, second, third or hell even fourth choice college but I'm on my way out and living on campus. Now all I gotta do is find me a new wardrobe...
Victim blaming in Islam
I keep seeing Muslims (especially online) claiming that if a woman dresses modestly, she can prevent being raped.
No.
Rape happens to men. Rape happens to children and babies. Rape happens to nuns in habits and to women in burkas.
Telling women, especially victims of rape, that they could have prevented it by dressing according to the Quranâs guidelines is disgusting, and it needs to stop.
Some muslim: *points to hair coming out of hijab that i am forced to wear* âOh your hair is showing from the back!!1 Fix your scarf!! Me on the inside:Â Â
Your daughters do not exist to give you grandchildren
LINDA SARSOUR
Like itâs great she organized the womenâs march but this women is a genuine sharia apologist. She says sharia law is âreasonableâ. When asked about Saudiâs sharia she ignores the horrific human rights abuse and instead she praises their paid maternity leave. She is a disgusting, selfish human being.
Linda Sarsour, the woman who tweeted this.
Yeah, she just said that Ayaan, a woman who suffered genital mutilation when she was a Muslim girl, that she should have her vagina removed because Linda doesnât agree with Aayanâs opinions.
Linda is no feminist, and this is coming from an actual feminist.
Can this bitch shut the fuck up instead of defending Erdogan? She calls herself a feminist and then supports a leader who is trying to destroy minorities in Turkey, a country that also has a long history of horrifying abuses against minority women. And then American liberal feminists ignore all this to use her as a token of the âdiversityâ in their movement.
man i hate when non-turks who know jack shit about turkish politics talk
destroy minorities? Erdogan himself is a âminorityâ, heâs mostly Georgian with Pontic Greek roots. Plus, he actually defended the usage of the greek name âPotamyaâ against its turkified version âGĂŒneysuâ. So much for trying to destroy minorities.
You must be mistaking Turkish Nationalism with the âUmmahâ; Erdogan is an islamist and islamists see nationalism as haram and consider themselves Muslim before anything else.
âlong history of horrifying abuses against minority womenâ
Youâre greek, right? Do you want me to elaborate on how Greek Soldiers treated Turkish Women and Girls during the greek occupation of western anatolia in 1919-1922 ?
Still, Linda Sarsour is a bitch for defending a dictator who oppresses not just minorities but anyone whoâs against his rule.
man i hate when turks speak over the people who they oppressed, abused, and committed genocide on. Wow Erdogan said it was okay for one place to have a Greek name? How useful to minority rights. That totally makes up for all the Pontic Greeks Turkey committed genocide on. Itâs pretty convenient of you to ignore whatâs happened with the Kurdish minority recently or the continuing erasure of Armenians. We all know Erdogan is an Islamist but somehow he doesnât see nationalism as haram when he allows the oppression of Kurds which heâs gotten much worse on in recent times. May I remind you that Turkey still denies the Armenian, Assyrian and Pontic genocides? Erdogan might technically be a minority??? So? That doesnât automatically mean he cares about people of other minority groups and it especially doesnât mean that he cares about people from other religious groups.Â
You wanna play that game with me? No one denies what happened during the Greco-Turkish war but youâre denying the very blatant abuses against minority women in Turkey you disgusting freak. Okay, do you want me to elaborate on what Turks did to Armenian, Greek, and Assyrian women during the genocides? Do you want me to elaborate on how rape was used deliberately to destroy the Armenian population? Your country has a history of using rape against minority women during the genocides of those minorities as a way to wipe those populations out. And thatâs just one example. But okay, since youâre obviously just another genocide denier Turk, you donât care. But okay, continue to defend your countryâs dictator since him being an ambiguously Georgian Islamist makes everything okay. I said nothing inaccurate, and youâre twisting it because you canât deal with the reality of what happened and continues to happen in your country. Like you people have been trying to kill us all for years, so trust me we understand your country perfectly. Get fucked.Â
@the-original-highlander @kolovratsk @qaesi look at this
This was a fantastic attempt to pin your countryâs crimes and wrongdoings on the people they oppressed. But youâre wrong, no matter how much you try to prove your point using semantics.
destroy minorities? Erdogan himself is a âminorityâ, heâs mostly Georgian with Pontic Greek roots.
Except he changes his mind about his ancestry literally every couple of years. In 2003-2004, he said: âIâm a Georgian, my family is a Georgian family which migrated from Batumi (Southwestern Georgia) to Rize (Northwestern Turkey).â
A decade later, he said in an interview: âYou wouldnât believe the things they have said about me. They have said I am Georgian⊠forgive me for saying this⊠even much uglier things, they have called me Armenian, but I am Turkish.âÂ
Sources:Â
Recep Tayyip Erdogan - âI was called a Georgian and (âŠ) even worse, an Armenian. I am a Turk.â (Washington Post)
Turkish President a proud Turk - slurs against Georgians and Armenians (Al Monitor, Pulse of the Middle East)
President Erdogan calls being Georgian âuglyâ (Todayâs Zaman, English Newspaper in Turkey)
Apparently, even when it comes to his own ancestry, Erdogan is a total schizophrenic. There is no proof whatsoever of him having Pontian roots. Even if he does have some Georgian ancestry, which he denies quite fervently, it is at most assumed that his ancestors assimilated into Ottoman Turkey generations ago, meaning he never lived in a Georgian background or held Georgian values.
So basically, there might be some slim chance of him having Georgian roots, but he never got in touch with them. Oh also heâs a Turkish nationalist.
Ergo, he is a Turk. End of story.
And even if he were 0% Turk, which believe me is not the case, heâs still trying to destroy minorities, neighboring countries and foreigners in general. His great-great-grandfatherâs birthplace doesnât change that.
Erdogan publicly vilifies religious minorities
Christians used as scapegoat after failed Turkish coup
Turkey: Rising Anti-Semitism
Greeks denied human rights in Turkey
Turkish government massacres Yezidi Kurds
Attacking Armenians in public
Alevi minorities facing discrimination in Turkey
Erdoganâs slurs against Cypriots
Hratch Tchilingirian: The âOther Citizensâ - unending discrimination against Armenians
New Turkish maps under Erdogan threaten Greece and Iraq
Erdoganâs attacks on Kurdish civilians
Those are just a few basic examples of how ethnic and religious minorities live in Turkey under Erdoganâs regime. Not only does his government restrict their rights, but he encourages attacks on civilians by demonizing them - calling Greeks and Cypriots animals and infidels, referring to Kurds as dangerous thieves, insulting Georgians and Armenians and inciting mistrust for Jews.
Erdogan is a threat to minorities and political dissidents. Anyone who denies that is blatantly excusing the genocides, wars, massacres and hate crimes they have been facing for centuries.
Youâre greek, right? Do you want me to elaborate on how Greek Soldiers treated Turkish Women and Girls during the greek occupation of western anatolia in 1919-1922 ?
What exactly are you playing at? Greek soldiers were occupying Smyrna in 1922 because the Great Fire, carried out by the Turkish army and nationalist organizations on command of the government, had already killed nearly a million Greeks. The Ottoman Empire conducted a nine-year-long genocide against Greeks of Asia Minor.
Not to mention that Smyrna was part of the land that had legally been promised to Greece by the Allied Forces after World War I based on the Treaty of SĂšvres. You know, that treaty that was signed after the Ottomans enabled German and Austro-Hungarian forces and aided the genocide of Armenians, Greeks, Assyrians, Serbs, and other ethnic groups. Â
I mean you do realize youâre basically saying âwell sure the Turkish army burned down the homes of almost every Greek in Smyrna and Ayvali, sent them on death marches, starved and worked them to death, raped the girls and women, slaughtered the boys and men, intentionally murdered them in front of their families, mutilated their corpses, destroyed their churches, stole their property, and forced them out of their rightful homes, for almost a decade, but evil Greeks captured Smyrna for 15 months!â
I mean, if thatâs what you want to talk about, I can go further than the Great Fire of Smyrna and the Pontian Genocide. Maybe we can talk about 1974. How the Church of Cyprus legalized abortion because Turkish soldiers raped hundreds girls and women from 12 to 70 multiple times, to the point of insanity. Or would you prefer to talk about how they murdered 6-month-old babies in front of their parents?
Itâs all here - in this comprehensive list of Turkish war crimes against Greeks and Greek Cypriots recognized by the UN.
Donât try to play the victim here, itâs not fucking comparable.
Sarsour is still a bitch but I really donât care abut her. Blame liberal feminists for idolizing her.
Ayaan Hirsi Ali has actually stated she canât go to Muslim neighborhoods in the UK because people will attack her for leaving Islam. We are talking about a black woman with a Muslim name who is literally afraid of being assaulted by Muslims. To say Ayaan deserves an âass whoopinââ and to have âher vagina taken awayâ is not funny, but enabling this kind of behavior.Â
Exactly, I donât agree with everything Hirsi Ali has said, but all of it is understandable due to her experiences and to advocate for violence against her is completely unacceptable. Sarsourâs views on Ayaan Hirsi Ali are essentially Islamist extremism.
As a young girl, I wanted to have six or more kids. Like my ambition and goal in life was to procreate. In my mind, my fertility equalled my success as a woman and that it was also my sole purpose. And I am pretty sure I am not the only girl who has thought this and it makes me wonder how many brilliant and wonderful minds are being ignored and locked away because procreation is seen as a womanâs ultimate success.
The ideas you had of yourself in no way impacts other women or society. My sister wants to have many children and did, and she also has a very fulfilling career. Maybe you should not project your own insecurities on plenty of mothers who also have careers. This is your own fault, not societyâs.Â
I was raised in an extremely religious Muslim household where girls are taught to be mothers to the future generations of little Muslims, where higher education is not always encouraged, where many of my classmates were married off between the ages of 15-18, where women who donât have children are seen as being defective, where if a woman has children and works she is seen as a terrible mother and bad example.
So no, this is not #feministstupidity or me projecting my insecurities, this is showing how I have overcome years of religious brainwashing. It shows that I know now that if I donât have children, it doesnât mean I am a defective, terrible failure of a woman. It shows that I know that I am more than just a womb. It also shows to my many female exmuslim followers that these feelings are completely normal and that they are not defined by the religious brainwashing they have endured.
Good for you, but not everyone receives the same brainwashing. Ergo, you should not project the experience you went through onto other women. I am sorry you feel the way you do and Iâm sorry you were raised the way you were but this is not all women. Feminism is also an ideology which has brainwashed you so you have merely only traded one religion for another. I hope you realize that.Â
Oh, and you may want to speak to the feminist who are now trying to adopt the Muslim mentality and who scream about it during rallies. There are many feminists now who support sharia law which is quite worrying, but yes, of course, you have rejected one religion for another which is so very different, isnât it?
#UltraFeministStupidity
I am not projecting my issues onto other women. I am bringing awareness of the struggles that ExMuslim women face on a level they can relate to. My tumblr is dedicated to the ExMuslim cause which sadly is a cause that is often ignored. I speak up about my experiences growing up in a Muslim household and I speak up against all the oppression that exmuslim women face which include being silenced by the very people they need support from. I am sorry that you spend your time trawling through #feminist and just assumed you were justified in attacking me without actually developing an understanding of where I was coming from or my background simply because I dared to use the word feminist in a tag. I agree with you when you state that feminists that support things like Sharia and adopt a pro-Muslim mentality are worrying. They are the very people that are silencing people like me. They shut us down every time we try to raise awareness when we actually speak the truth about a very dangerous religion. They accuse us of being anti-women, islamophobes, liars and bigots. They ridicule our experiences and refuse to see us as who we really are, which is victims and survivors. From what I gather, you are very against the current Western Feminism that is spreading like wildfire and in some aspects, I am too. But you need to understand that whilst you may live a very comfortable life where you have that ability to choose, many women in Third World Countries are not afforded the same privilege and they need a feminist movement. I am so very happy that your sister has been able to live a life completely of her choosing because sadly MANY ExMuslim and Muslim women are not afforded the same luxury. I am finally able to live a life of my choosing. I am now able to choose who I want to marry, if I want to have children or not, what I do for work but I had to fight for my freedom. So when I say I was raised believing that motherhood was the only purpose for my life, I am saying that my own mother said that I didnât need to receive even the most basic education because why would I need it?  Many Muslim and ExMuslim women who I speak with and live all over the world have said similar things. Also, how dare you make light of the terrible experiences I have faced by saying that I âhave merely only traded one religion for anotherâ? Even if I was a staunch feminist or a âradfemâ, which I am not, it is still a hell of a lot better than a religion that is literally calling for me to be whipped, stoned and finally executed. Perhaps you should stop projecting your issues and go educate yourself.
Saving Face (2012), acid attacks on women in Pakistan
Meanwhile, in America, feminists are complaining about how dress codes are oppressive.
You idiots have never experienced oppression, and pray you never do, because this is what it looks like.
As a South Asian American feminist, let me remind everyone that oppression is not a competition.
Just because we fight one type of sexism doesnât mean we donât care about other instances of sexism that donât affect us directly in our day to day lives.
My heart goes out to this woman and the hundreds of other victims like her. I want to educate people about these kinds of incidents. I support organizations that help women like this.
You may think that dress code issues are trivial, but they are related to a larger issue of womenâs bodily autonomy, which affects womenâs health and safety.
So please, letâs try to bring awareness and bring about change instead of insulting entire groups of people because they are facing issues that are less scary than the one presented.
âoppression is not a competitionâ
thank you so much for this wording
Every time someone, usually a guy, complains about feminists not experiencing oppression, I canât help but see what they are really trying to say.
âThis is how men could be treating you, be grateful itâs only as bad as it is now.â
And thatâs actually an attribute of abusers, I believe I read somewhere. To compare you to someone being treated worse and tell you you should be grateful you have it so good. It convinces the victim they should be silent in the face of their abuse.
Itâs literally an abuse tactic.Â
Every time someone says something like, âYou [âŠ] have never experienced oppression, and pray you never do, because this is what it looks like.â What they are saying is, âshut up, we could treat you worse if we wanted to.â
