My parents spanked me. I would've told you that I had a good relationship with my father, but I have actually always been low-key afraid of him.

I had this weird moment watching the superman where Kevin Costner played Jonathan Kent. In the movie Pa Kent tells Clark not to expose himself to save him. I can't remember quite what the danger was. There was a storm or something. But I do remember sitting in the theater beside my father watching a movie where the conceit is that the most powerful being on the planet is forced to watch in horror as his father dies in front of him. And my authoritarian father was angry at Clark's innaction. He felt it was unbelievable that superman wouldn't save his father. And I knew but couldn't say, that I would've acted the same. Not out of spite but because I had been trained to never defy my father EVER. No matter what. Even if I objectively knew better.

That is one of the things that spanking does. It teaches you the wrong thing. Pain shouldn't be a deterrent to keep you from acting. As a matter of fact, sometimes you should keep acting in spite of the pain. You SHOULD develop into a person who acts according to your conscience, even if it displeases your parents. That is what's supposed to happen.

When you say "I was spanked, and I turned out okay," you are still the child lying about your parents, because it is too hard to look at the naked truth: that they shouldn't have done that to you. I fully believe that conservatives do not want their tax dollars going to fund school lunches for children because they see children not as individual people but rather as extensions of their parents, and they view a child’s hunger as a moral failing of the parent to maintain their property rather than a hungry child being a vulnerable individual that deserves to be fed.
