Uncanny Avengers #4 - "Unmasked!" (2023)

requested by anonymous:
RATING: RELIABLE
The above is from this article from The Guardian. The images are from MYA Network. The caption on their website reads:
Source: ‘When a sperm and egg get together, the body creates tissue in order to support the developing pregnancy. Here are photos of that tissue from 5-9 week pregnancies. This is called the gestational sac, and it’s like the “house” for the pregnancy. Inside this sac there are cells that have the potential to become a fetus but there is no visible embryo at this stage. We rinsed off the blood and menstrual lining (decidua) for these photographs.’
The published images sparked a lot of debate, leading to the story being picked up by other news outlets. For example:
Source: ‘Last week, the Guardian published images of pregnancy tissue after abortions in the first 10 weeks of pregnancy. The small size and appearance of the tissue were shocking to many. We have all absorbed, knowingly and unknowingly, the pervasive anti-abortion narrative that a pregnancy resembles a tiny baby starting in the earliest weeks. Though an early embryo can be seen under the magnification of ultrasound, it can take months for it to be perceptible to the naked eye.’
Source: ‘People have responded in disbelief, citing the (magnified) images they’ve seen on ultrasounds. […] ”Think of the illustrations on pregnancy and medical websites. The Mayo Clinic, one of the preeminent medical organizations in the country, shows week-by-week illustrations of embryonic and fetal development without any context of scale, like the rulers in the MYA photos.’
As stated in the article, whilst people talk about a ‘heartbeat’ at 6 weeks, there is no heart developed at this stage - only a group of cells that will become part of the heart.
Source: ‘But what exactly do we mean when we talk about a “fetal heartbeat” at six weeks of pregnancy? Although some people might picture a heart-shaped organ beating inside a fetus, this is not the case. Rather, at six weeks of pregnancy, an ultrasound can detect “a little flutter in the area that will become the future heart of the baby,” said Dr. Saima Aftab, medical director of the Fetal Care Center at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Miami. This flutter happens because the group of cells that will become the future “pacemaker” of the heart gain the capacity to fire electrical signals, she said.’
It should also be noted that the images show an embryo, not a fetus, until the 9th week.
Source: ‘In human pregnancies, a baby-to-be isn’t considered a fetus until the 9th week after conception, or week 11 after your last menstrual period (LMP).’
The co-founders of the MYA Network responded in a New York Times article.
Source: ‘Many people, even those who support abortion rights, did not believe the photos were accurate. Some insisted we had deliberately removed the embryos before taking the photos. The images weren’t consistent with those often seen in embryological textbooks, magnified on ultrasounds or used in anti-abortion propaganda; these enlarged images are not what you see with the naked eye after an abortion. A Stanford gynecologic pathologist has validated our photos, but many people could not believe the pictures were presented unaltered.
DO NOT DO THIS.
This makes me so angry.
If you work in a movie theater and you do this I have no respect for you.
My younger brother is Type 1 Diabetic.
When we go to a movie theater, we always get him diet soda. If he were to get regular when we asked for diet, we would not give him the insulin he would need for it. If that happens, his blood sugar level could go so high he could go into a coma, go blind, or even die.
If somebody gave him regular soda instead of diet without telling us, that person could be responsible for a nine-year-old being killed or blinded.
Just thinking about that makes me so angry. I get scared every time we take him to a movie in case the people working there saw this picture and decide to do the same thing.
Please signal boost this so people know.
This also applies to baristas
Fun story about the baristas doing this kind of shit.
I am very sensitive to lactose, not Lactose intolerant but because of stomach ulcers that are still healing. A couple years ago I went to Starbucks right after my classes with some friends and asked for a green tea latte with soy milk. The barista, for some reason out of malice and/or hate for her life so she took it out on me, gave me whole milk in my latte.
5 minutes after my first sip of latte, my stomach cramped BAD. Not the “Oh! time to poop!” kind of cramp but it felt like someone had stabbed me with a knife and twisted it. Now I’ve had this happen before so I knew the cause of it. I went up to the barista clutching my gut screaming at her that she put dairy in my latte rather than soy LIKE I REQUESTED. She denied it and called me a “pretentious white girl for wanting soy”and so my friends got the manager. I had to explain that I had stomach ulcers that were still healing and if I were to go to the hospital for this incident, they would be responsible for it.
Manager flipped his shit and the barista was terrified out of her mind. Pretty sure both thought i was gonna sue. Manager actually fired her on the spot because of the negligence. My friends managed to get me home in one piece while I stayed home for 3 days in absolute agony and missed my midterm.
So remember kiddies, if someone is asking for Diet or “Skinny” or “soy” or anything that is not regular, give them what they requested because it may not be them being healthy, but a dietary need that can possibly be life or death
also if they ARE trying to be healthy you should give it to them to!! Its not your decision to police or question others food choices!!!
also im lactose intolerant AND ive had stomach infections/ulcers so i feel this.
I have Celiac Disease, so I’m very gluten intolerant. When I go out to eat at restaurants a lot of people just assume that I asked for my food gluten free because of the gluten free diet fad (which is usually a bullshit diet btw).
Last month I went out to dinner with a friend at an italian restaurant that had a small gluten free menu. I had been there once before and had their gluten free pasta and it was great! I think one of the managers had been there and was super helpful when taking my order to make sure that everything was gluten free for me. When I ordered the gluten free pasta again this time though, the waitress who took my order all but rolled her eyes at me. I didn’t think much of it at the time, because the restaurant was so accommodating before, I just assumed it would be the same this time.
But sure enough, they brought out my pasta, I ate it, and about an hour later I had extreme stomach pains and was throwing up (in a movie theater no less).
Barfing and agonizing pain aside, eating gluten when you have celiac causes a lot of internal damage that’s hard to notice. The biggest thing is that it damages your intestines, preventing your body from absorbing nutrients properly, which can take months to heal.
So PLEASE, if you work at a restaurant or anything with food and someone asks for something a certain way, please listen to them and don’t just disregard someone’s order. It’s not funny and it can have serious consequences.
I will reblog this with every single story about someone getting sick because of an asshole giving them the opposite of what they ordered until it sinks in for everyone.
Recently on the news a 16 year old boy with a dairy allergy had gone to eat at IHOP with his family. The specifically asked if they could make dairy free pancakes and they said yes. Not too long after he had a reaction and was rushed to the hospital. This kid died because the was dairy in his pancakes that they asked for no dairy. His epi pen that his mother had wasn’t enough to help him. I know working in fast food or any job that’s serves food and beverage sucks but not as much as causing someone to get sick over negligence.
My youngest cousin – who is now five, he just started kindergarten – has Celiac’s disease. You would not BELEIVE the amount of times I’ve heard my aunt say she’s ordered something gluten free, only to watch the waiter or waitress’s eyes go huge when she gives it to my cousin – my cousin with the medical id band on his tiny five year old wrist proclaiming I HAVE CELIACS and have to take it back. Shit like this could kill my cousin. Knock it the fuck off.
I cannot tolerate caffeine–it makes me have chest pain and a racing pulse, and also gives me horrible body pain, so I always ask for decaf if I order coffee when I’m out, and doublecheck with the waiter/ress when they bring it. but instead of saying “is this decaf like I asked for?” I always say “oh, did I remember to order decaf?” I shouldn’t have to act like I’m the forgetful one (because I know damn well I asked for decaf) but it seems to work better than implying that they screwed up when I take the blame on myself like that. and if there’s any hesitation when they answer, I tell them, “if there’s any doubt, please get another one, or just give me water–if this is regular, it’ll mess up my heart” and lots of times when I say that, they look alarmed and go change it or get another one.
but I shouldn’t HAVE to share my personal medical history with strangers just to get my order right! no one should! how is it their business? it makes me really uncomfortable to have to do that. JUST GIVE PEOPLE WHAT THEY ORDER!
I’ve reblogged this maaaany times before but there’s a few new stories on here so i’m doing it again.
cut this shit out
don’t be that kind of asshole.
As a diabetic, this would make me so beyond angry. Skinny doesn’t mean they don’t have a life threatening illness. Skinny doesn’t mean they can process sugar the way you do. People that do this are the worst kinds of people. DO NOT DO THIS!
Me and my family went to a restaurant a few years back and one of the dishes we ordered was made with wine vinegar, which I am allergic to, so we asked the waiter to skip it, and he said sure, no problem, that’s fine. So my food gets to the table, and I start eating and then my throat closes and I can’t breathe and then I start coughing and throwing up right there in the middle of the restaurant and it was very fortunate that I was with my family and they knew what was happening to me. I had to be rushed to the hospital, and admitted, and I came damn near close to having my throat cut open so I could breathe through a whole on my neck. Because they put wine vinegar in my food when I explicitly told them not to, because they were assholes, and I could have died. They probably didn’t mean to hurt me but they did. I missed class, and work, and, again, I COULD HAVE DIED.
i have cyclic vomiting syndrome and can’t tolerate dairy or red meat. violating my dietary restrictions triggers an acute episode, and i have to be hospitalized and given iv saline, ativan, and anti-emetics to stop the (extremely painful and incapacitating) vomiting. if somebody put regular milk instead of soy milk in my latte and i didn’t notice the taste immediately, i could wind up in the er and then spend several days in bed recovering, eating nothing but saltines and dry toast and clear liquids until my body was able to tolerate food again, unable to work or go out or do anything besides rest. whenever i go to starbucks, i WATCH them make my drink. cvs episodes are horrible and i hate them, and i can prevent them if i do everything right, but that means my damn barista has to cooperate. if somebody decided i was a stuck up white girl and gave me whole milk instead of soy they could put me in the hospital and cost me days of income. give ppl the food they fuckin order. it’s not that hard.
Reblogging because it’s so important. I’m “lucky” I don’t have any food allergies or intolerence, but it makes me mad when people take them not seriously, think you are picky or just following a “white girl diet fad”.
90% of people don’t take my cats and dog allergies seriously when I tell them I’m allergic and wondering if a cat or a dog is present at X place. They think it’s just watery eyes. Nope. Well yeah, watery and itchy eyes, but I start wo wheeze and have trouble breathing. They don’t give epi-pen for those (anyway you have to go to the hospital after) just inhaler. It’s no miracle, specially if I didn’t take other meds before.
When people tell you about their allergies or restriction, trust them!
Reblogging for all the stories here because this is sooo important!
I have a severe allergy to gluten and relate to MANY of the stories above. My daughter has a severe allergy to milk fat, and I have had to hold her hair many times while she vomits on the side of the road because we couldn’t even make it home from the “accidental” whole milk instead of skim.
I’m super lactose intolerant so accidental milk is always fun. Severe diarrhea, stomach cramps, bloating, and gas like you wouldn’t believe. Better than death you might say but, I have other medical conditions, so that diarrhea could lead to vomiting(it’s so bad the vomit comes out my mouth AND nose) and dehydration that in turn becomes low cortisol and adrenal crisis. A bitchy barista can land me in the hospital with an intramuscular shot and saline iv. Hun, it takes no time to listen and follow my order. It takes me at least 24 hours to get out of the hospital. Be nice.
I’m allergic to pork. Legit allergic. I can’t count how many times I’ve had to ask it off my food only to receive it with bacon or ham or something on it.
Please respect peoples food requests. It costs 0.00$ to not be a dick.
I actually have customers who say they’ll only eat at my restaurant when I’m there, because they know I require all policy to be followed, as in “I will kick you the fuck off your shift if you skimp,” if someone says the words “I have an allergy.” I developed our allergy policies, for that matter, because what we had in place before was “I guess you shouldn’t change your gloves … . ?” On my shifts your gloves get changed, that line gets wiped down with a new cloth, paper under EVERY ITEM for the person with the allergy, bag their food separately to prevent contact. If there’s a risk of cross-contamination with an allergen, like tomatoes in the guac because stuff spills when you’re moving as fast as we do, I’ll open a new bag of food. I learned the ingredients in every item we serve so I could advise people on hidden allergens (e.g., there’s a small amount of wheat in our beef as a thickener; we fry with safflower oil). We have a grease pencil to mark special builds and I use it liberally on allergy orders. If all of this sounds like overkill, you’ve never watched a child suffer from anaphylaxis. I don’t play around.
Like, I bitch about my job a lot, but food allergies and special needs are not something I will ever bitch about. Even if you’re a complete asshole I won’t risk contaminating your food. (Although people with allergies seem to be way nicer than the general population, I gotta say.) Don’t do it. If someone’s a petty asshole to you, give them too much ice in their drink. Don’t play with their health.
DO NOT FUCKING SCROLL PAST THIS P L E A S E
Reblogging this again because it is important. Doing the right thing has no cost but doing the wrong thing can cost a person’s life. Don’t be a dick, give the person what they ordered
Mom worked at McDick’s back in the 70s, she had a horror story to share about a manager telling her to give regular coffee to a customer who asked for decaf.
Customer was pregnant.
She still thinks about that every day.
So yeah this negligence has been around forever.

a pervasive and frankly borderline toxic issue in fandom these days is how popular headcanons are elevated to the status of being irrefutable canon and so insanely clung to and that when they are challenged, majority of fandom lose their damn minds and forget they was the ones to make the shit up in the first place
#im not a CANON IS END ALL BE ALL person at all#but once fandom gets locked in on a specific headcanon and they can find a way to weaponize a moral reason why it is SO#fuggetaboutit#and its EXHAUSTING to watch tbh#going into non-edit tags is like setting urself on fire#and im a FANDOM OLD and like lol it wasn’t always like this
#your headcanons might be important#they might enhance your canon experience by a fuckton#they might make all kinds of sense to you#but literally none of that makes them actual canon#LITERALLY NONE OF IT#and its exhausting to see ppl villified for not falling in line with certain headcanons
Fanon is awesome. Fanon is great. But the whole point is that it is NOT canon. Stop conflating the two. And stop bending canon to fit your personal fanon. If you don’t like what canon is doing and prefer your fanon, go you. Live your life. But stop pretending that canon is what it isn’t just so you can feel superior. Grow the fuck up.
idk. i think fandom could use a lot less of “every person’s interpretation of a text is valid and true!” and more of “reading a text means taking all parts of it into account, including the bits you don’t like or the pairings you don’t ship, to consider what the full picture is and what the larger themes are.”
projecting your fantasies onto a text, hyperfocusing on the characters you think are hot/shippable and building entire theories based on micro interactions that don’t take other competing dynamics and plotlines into account isn’t “analysis” it’s projection and fantasy. which is fine, but take responsibility for your desires and your fantasies instead of making fandom inhospitable for everyone. some readings of a text are plain wrong, others miss or willfully erase vital context just to rationalize romantic pairings. these are not accurate readings of the text. doesn’t mean they should be attacked or shamed, but neither can you expect people to validate every single headcanon and shipper fantasy as a legitimate “reading” of the text either.
Hot take 3:
Screw it, let’s also talk about how the MCU and Whedons pasty ass FUCKED Natalia Romanova.
So like the whole traumatic forced sterilization? Not in the comics and was unnecessary. Nat had kids in the comics, and she was a super soldier. A watered down one but still. She had relationships and was generally happy, until cap went “hail hydra” and snapped her neck.
Fucking cosmic cube -.-
Anyways. The way they portrayed her as a 2 dimensional “sexy spy” when she is more than that made me want to die. And also that…whatever she had with Bruce? Just no. Personally, this iteration of Natasha was my least favorite and I personally read the comic where she did a face swap with Yelena and tried to play it off as teaching her a lesson.
Whedon is an absolute idiot and I’m not going to budge on this.
Also. WHERE THE FUCK IS LIHO.
Nat didn’t HAVE kids in the comics. She is sterile. It was explained in Homecoming/The Things They Say About her. The current kid was engineered from her DNA. She had a baby that was still born when she was 16 (Name of the Rose) and it is unclear WHY the baby was still born. It is also technically before she joined the Widow Program and was in the time where she ran away from the Red Room and was on her own. She didn’t join the Widow program until they forced her hand when Ivan nearly died.... see below.
She is also not a super soldier. The only reference we get to ANY serum is from Deadly Origins. She accepted *something* in order to save Ivan. Given the longevity and her lack of pretty much all the other Super Soldier attributes, it’s far more likely she got a version of the Infinity Serum.
Now I don’t disagree with you a single bit on MCU Nat. They treated her like a joke and she was Black Widow in name only. Everything about her in MCU is such a shadow of the character she actually is.
ppl will say the most inflammatory mean spirited ignorant shit online even over like fandom or stan twitter drama and then when someone claps back it’s “im literally mentally ill and a minor. :/” yeah we can all tell
I’m my own woman, first, last, and always! BLACK WIDOW (1970s)
Phil Noto, Black Widow
I think... it's good to know that people think a heterosexual couple is likely to be canon from just one interaction while also be aware of the misogyny and racism from people who come after the woman in the fanon heterosexual relationship, as well the racism and the homophobia that comes with shipping. The racism and homophobia from people who do ship interracial and homosexual couples while also be misogynistic to the woman in the fanon/canon heterosexual relationship. As well as the racism and homophobia from people who don't ship interracial and homosexual couples.
That's the summary I have with SamBucky and all the things surrounding SamBucky. Honestly, they're so phenomenal that there's so much against them too... but even with that against them, there's also love for them so... I'm sticking to loving them.
Hi Anon!!! I'm trying to follow what you wrote and I think I understood what you're saying, and if I misunderstood any part, let me know.
In my opinion, you're right and absolutely right you'll find racism and misogyny in many MCU fandoms especially when it comes to M/M ships and female characters who are potential love interests, and also sometimes homophobia for people who are trying to argue against M/M ships and it's not always easy to navigate.
It goes from the usual "why does everything have to be gay" to.... some stuff I won't re-write. But I have seen some nasty stuff on Twitter and people think it's ok, because they're criticizing a ship.
On the other hand, a lot shippers especially in the MCU fandom refuse to acknowedge that there is a racism problem in the fandom because then, they would have to admit that maybe they have a racism problem too or have some prejudice.
Like, why do you think you make gifsets of all MCU4 characters and then conviniently forget to include the Black character who is the lead of the show? Or always think about how Steve left Bucky, but never think about Sam, who didn't even know Steve was leaving. Or why they can see that Bucly needs to be take care of sometimes, but never think about Sam does too? Or why Black Widow and Captain Marvel are praised by feminists as groundbreaking in the superhero world but they never talk about Black Panther, that had 3 female superheroes and one Queen (More female characters than any MCU movies before that, but apparently it only counts when it's White men) Maybe there's some self - exploration to be done there, before you start getting defensive and denying everything. (I hope that you understood that this is a general you lol, not you anon😉).
So yeah, a lot of racism, but getting defensive is easier than acknowlzdging the problem
But you're right too that some anti M/M shipping rhetoric use arguments that are bordering on homophobia and even plain right homophobic sometimes.
However, HOWEVER, what you are saying is only true in theory, but in practice it isn't completely true. From what I have observed a lot of the shippers who talk about homophobia, or queer representation when it comes to shipping...are really quiet when some topics arise.
Exhibit A: "Shipping is about representation"
There is a CANON gay character in the Eternals movies and I have yet to see posts about him. I have seen some of course, but the number of them is absolutely disheartening. Empty emptiness. And Phastos has a husdand and they have a child!!! I hope I am wrong and that once the movie comes out he will be getting lots and lots of support... But I have close to no faith in the fandom.
I don't want to hear any arguments about how he is a side character when White Male side characters have always been popular on this webiste. And have had support, gifsets, and metas written about them even when they had one minute screentime.
Exhibit B: The whole discourse surrounding what happened with that Interview with Anthony Mackie
I read the interview way before I even read the transcript or listen to the audio, so to me Anthony was talking about Sambucky in the interview.
And even then, I said that the conversation shouldn't be about the shipping because he is an actor, he just plays the script he is given and isn't involved in the writing or anything... So blaming him for "not shipping" Sambucky was nonsensical and irrelevant. And saying he was "homophobic" for not seeing them as romantic, was completely ridiculous.
For me, the problematic part of Anthony's interview was the part where he talked about how two male friends couldn't go to the bar anymore without people thinking they're together and I don't like it when people talk that way because there are homophobic undertones to it, because why is it a problem if people think you are gay? But a lot of Straight Cis men talk like that, and although I thought this should be discussed, I didn't think it deserved qo much outrage and hatred towards him.
So imagine my surprise when I when through Tumblr posts and Twitter only to find out that most people who were calling him homophobic were calling him that because he said he didn't ship Sambucky.... So here we are, with people calling out an actor because he said the two characters were friends and they literally didn't care about any part of the interview except the part about the ship.
A lot of people were not interested in any conversation about homophobia that didn't revolve around whether or not Anthony shipped Sambucky... Why do I think that? Because they were only talking in terms of Sambucky,(as if Anthony had any say in the writing) .The moment the transcripts were available and it was made clear that he wasn't talking about Sambucky, discussions stopped.
This is how I see the people who were hating on Anthony btw:
And to be clear, I'm not saying people who say they ship characters because there is a lack of representation are lying or anything, no they're not, because the Queer MCU fans really care about representation and some compensate the lack with shipping, but there is also part of the fandom that says it but doesn't believe it, this is just my observation from the few fandoms I have been in. I won't pretend I know how it is for all the other fandoms.
Anyway, thank you for writing this to me. As long as you are aware of what's going on in the fandom and not trying to deny it. As you said, continue shipping Sambucky in peace😉!
As long as people don't put their heads in the sand and acknowledge that a lot of Tumblr fandoms have a tendecy to minimize M/F ships in favor of M/M ships, treat the female characters horrribly and also getting defensive whenever the topic of racism is brought up, instead of just listening.
Honestly, I agree with 95% of this. It was well stated and well spoken.
Here’s the part I disagree with, tho let me preface this by saying I have not seen the interview in question or read transcripts etc...
The idea that someone has homophobic undertones simply because they say two people can’t go do something together without it being something other than friendship is silly. The fact is, especially in the Tumblrsphere, friendship is often cast aside in favor of a “ship”. People will literally ignore the fact a solid friendship exists to push their sexual relationship. Not every relationship has a sexual element. I have plenty of friends of all genders and sexual orientations. Frankly, there’s only about 1% of them I would even be remotely sexually attracted to. And herein lies where I absolutely cringe when people start slinging the “homophobia” term around. Because they have forgotten that all relationships aren’t sexual or romantic in nature. You CAN have friends who don’t want to sleep with. You CAN have people whose company you enjoy without wanting to jump their bones.
People can ship what they want. But they often throw around things like “homophobia” simply because they aren’t getting their way. Do I find Mackie’s comments homophobic? No. Simply put because no one seems to value a friendship any longer. Now, I don’t know the man, don’t follow him, don’t read interviews, etc.. so maybe he truly is homophobic. But I’m not willing to call it based on this comment.
Sexualizing every relationship, no matter what gender or sexual orientation is involved isn’t ok, because friendship is just as important a relationship as everything else. And it’s OK to have strong friendships. We should all be so lucky as to have more of those.
Lingering perfume follows her stride, sweet for the kind but stings those who lied, so don’t you cross her, cheat or fib, she’ll cut you from her life, snip snip.

daniel radcliffe calling out j.k. rowling on her bullshit is big dick energy
One thing I have not seen mentioned in light of this statement, perhaps because it's just well known or perhaps because it's been forgotten, is that Radcliffe has dealt with this before. About 10 years ago his friendship with a trans musician named Our Lady J became known to the tabloids. They immediately published sensational articles calling her a transvestite and a drag queen (she was not), and speculating about the nature of their relationship. He responded to insinuating questions by simply being aggressively positive about what a great musician and good friend she was. They did at least one interview together for a queer magazine. This at a time when trans people were even more marginalized than now, and when he as an actor was finishing Harry Potter and under a lot of pressure to ~manage his image~ as he transitioned to an adult career.
TL;DR - Radcliffe has a record of not just saying nice things, but supporting trans people in his life.
I don’t know how many times I have to say this, but Yelena FLAT SAYS SHE IS NOT A LESBIAN.
I’ll let you argue the AroAce thing as I can see it going both ways, but there is no getting around her not being a lesbian. It literally could not have been said more clearly. At all. And nothing in later appearances discredits that single statement. Nothing.
So basically a bunch of folks want to change her sexuality for their own purposes, but would scream bloody murder if someone did it to an actual canon lesbian. JFC
From Pale Little Spider, Yelena’s ONLY solo run.
She very clearly states she is not a lesbian. In canon.
It’s also this panel that leads people to believe she’s asexual.
