DEAN DI LAURENTIS and ALLIE HAYES — OFF CAMPUS 01.08 'The Line Change'
First roadie as both Cens, Shane and Ilya break their hotel bed and their team goes absolutely insane chirping them about it like omg you horn dogs couldn't even make it ONE NIGHT is your bed at home steel reinforced? can't take these guys anywhere.
And the truth is they broke it while roughhousing over the tv remote, fully clothed, but never in a million years will they reveal that to their teammates cause that chirping will honestly be even worse.
Twilight if Jasper was the problematic twink he was meant to be
Bella: um actually I'd feel better if Jasper went with me to the bathroom
Jasper: Seriously?! I just sat down, it's not bad enough I had to use all of my frequent flyer points for you? Besides I'm not going within a 100 foot radius of a public bathroom in an international airport. No, not in these shoes. Sit your ass down.
the best fanfiction you've ever read was written by a woman in her 40s before she made dinner for her kids. it was written by a teenager after school when they should've been studying for a history test. and a barista came up with the idea while they cleaned the espresso machine and busser fact-checked it on their break and the post-doc edited between writing grant proposals and the nurse apologized for typos in the notes after a long shift and behind every drabble and one-shot and multi-chapter fic there is a person with a wonderful and interesting and chaotic life and it is such a privilege that we get to be apart of it because they decided to do this thing we all share, for fun.
And the little bird, your pretty sister, I stood there in my white cloak and let them beat her. I took the bloody song, she never gave it. I meant to take her too. I should have. I should have fucked her bloody and ripped her heart out before leaving her for that dwarf.
Yes, i know that quote and the fact that you can see how much Sandor was destroyed in the mind and the spirit when he said it.
"Don't lie," he growled. "I hate liars. I hate gutless frauds even worse. Go on, do it." When Arya did not move, he said, "I killed your butcher's boy. I cut him near in half, and laughed about it after." He made a queer sound, and it took her a moment to realize he was sobbing. "And the little bird, your pretty sister, I stood there in my white cloak and let them beat her. I took the bloody song, she never gave it. I meant to take her too. I should have. I should have fucked her bloody and ripped her heart out before leaving her for that dwarf." (A Storm of Swords - Arya XIII)
Sandor was sobbing AND NOT FOR THE PAIN. He was in the same painfull conditions when he said that he did not care for the little butcher's boy, he growled but he did not cry. Its for Sansa that he cried, he never once pretended to be a better man that he was nor he pretend to no being guilty and wrong for that attraction that he has for Sansa, instead he compare make Sansa cry to a sin equal if not worse than kill a boy. He even compare saving Sansa to his only reediming quality and he romanticize her as she does for him :
"Because I hacked your little friend in two? I've killed a lot more than him, I promise you. You think that makes me some monster. Well, maybe it does, but I saved your sister's life too. The day the mob pulled her off her horse, I cut through them and brought her back to the castle, else she would have gotten what Lollys Stokeworth got. And she sang for me. You didn't know that, did you? Your sister sang me a sweet little song." (A Storm of Swords - Arya IX)
Sandor is not a perfect prince, none is in that books and Sansa knows it better than anyone since perfect prince Joffrey revealed himself for the monster that he is, but Sandor showed to deeply care about Sansa and to perceive his wrong actions against her as his biggest sin. Sandor's intentions werent pue but if he wanted to rape her he would, he restrain himself because he knows he deeply care about Sansa and he devoted to her enough to try at least to change. Its more evident if you compare how Sandor react to Sansa's refuse in opposition to Tyrion :
His mouth jerked as if she had slapped him. "Never?" Her neck was so tight she could scarcely nod. "Why," he said, "that is why the gods made whores for imps like me." (A Storm of Swords - Sansa III)
The room was too dark for her to see him, but she could feel the stickiness of the blood, and a wetness that was not blood. "Little bird," he said once more, his voice raw and harsh as steel on stone. Then he rose from the bed. Sansa heard cloth ripping, followed by the softer sound of retreating footsteps. (A Clash of Kings - Sansa VII)
Sansa had to openly reject Tyrion to get him away form her and even then he is frustrated as if he was misreated, Sandor get away from her because he felt ashamed. We can see that both are aware of their attraction but Sandor is ashamed.
"You look almost a woman...face, teats, and you're taller too, almost [..] Do you like wine, little bird? True wine? A flagon of sour red, dark as blood, all a man needs. Or a woman." He laughed, shook his head. "Drunk as a dog, damn me. You come now. Back to your cage, little bird. I'll take you there. Keep you safe for the king." The Hound gave her a push, oddly gentle, and followed her down the steps. (A Clash of Kings - Sansa II)
Tyrion had commanded Sansa to wear a sleeping shift as well. I want her, he realized. I want Winterfell, yes, but I want her as well, child or woman or whatever she is. I want to comfort her. I want to hear her laugh. I want her to come to me willingly, to bring me her joys and her sorrows and her lust. (A Storm of Swords - Tyrion IV)
She covered her breasts with her hands. "I've flowered." "A child," he repeated, "but I want you. Does that frighten you, Sansa?" "Yes." (A Storm of Swords - Sansa III)
Sandor also has a deep devotion to Sansa, so much so that while Jon was totally indifferent to Sansa being forced to marry Tyrion, Sandor was praying to see Sansa killing Tyrion to save herself :
Sansa only knows songs, not spells, and she'd never marry the Imp. The Hound sat on the bench closest to the door. His mouth twitched, but only the burned side. "She ought to dip him in wildfire and cook him. Or tickle him till the moon turns black." (A Storm of Swords - Arya XIII)
"The little bird flew away, did she? Well, bloody good for her. She shit on the Imp's head and flew off." (A Storm of Swords - Arya XIII)
the second quote is so funny to me, because he was able to answer to Sansa aka the girl that had the whole kingdom calling her a regicide but only cared about Sandor still being on her side :
She wondered what had become of Sandor Clegane. Did he know that they'd killed Joffrey? Would he care? He had been the prince's sworn shield for years. (A Storm of Swords - Sansa VI)
i do think we should popularise the term "fandom death spiral" for that thing where a fandom with no new content starts just shipping willy-nilly and flanderizing and woobifying and tropifying and fanonizing over and over and over again in an effort to Make New Things to the point where nothing in fandom is even related to the source material anymore. like this is an observable phenomenon
I agree with this, and would also suggest "fandom death roll" as an ancillary term to describe a more localized version of the same phenomenon, ie: what happens when an individual fan, having extracted as much seratonin from both the source material and the fandom experience as they are capable of receiving, begins to blame one or both of those things for the fact that they no longer like it as much as they used to. This disillusionment culminates in an effective face-heel turn: as critique is now the only novel means of engagement left to them, in preference to abandoning either the source material or their fandom connections entirely, they instead become active haters for the thing they used to love.
The A Song of Ice and Fire fandom is an interesting (meaning, absolutely horrifying and toxic) example of this. It's been 14 years since the last book, so the fandom has long since exhausted the possibility of saying or making anything new. But unlike a fandom that died a slow death after the media in question came to a natural end, the ASOIAF fandom remains kinda-sorta alive because the series is unfinished. And while the author is still alive, the hope that there will be at least one new book (if not the remaining two books) still lives on.
Add to that the absolute trash fire that was Game of Thrones. While it began as a reasonably good adaptation of ASOIAF, it ended after having thoroughly parted ways with the books, and with an ending that's become a byword for poor storytelling. So you get all sorts of people in the ASOIAF fandom: book fans who were indifferent to / never watched the show; book fans who began as show fans as well, but eventually became show haters as it went on, and now desperately need the books to provide real closure for the story; book-and-show fans who weren't too bothered by the show and who believe the books will end the same way, just better written; show fans who turned to the books after the show disappointed them; book fans (and book haters) who believe there will be no new books, and that the show provided the only ending the story is likely to get; and lots of variations in between.
So the majority of the "content" produced by the ASOIAF fandom nowadays is less about saying anything new about the text, which got analysed to death years ago, and more about which attitude towards the books and/or show is the most fruitful/realistic and will result in the best understanding of the books.
So basically, it's a zombie fandom which subsists on eating its own brains.
i think a lot of fandom should learn to stop trying to grapple criticism from a doylist perspective with watsonian arguments. u can analyze the text for what it is, and decipher what the author’s actual intentions and the themes they are dealing with are (& see the merit in them), and criticize execution and the issues from outside. art is not something that comes from the ether, it is written by someone lmao. engage with fiction like it is fiction. it is criticism of author, not watsonian criticism of a character, so there is no point to defending it like it is the latter. but it is also pretty obvious when someone pretends to care and makes use of legitimate grievances to support a generally unsubstantiated watsonian read, which leads to criticism of author getting lost in criticism of a character (as if they were a real person), because of perpetual discourse brain.
I think this problem is often sourced in a fandom misinterpretation of "death of the author", which is a litcrit method of treating the text as separate from its creator and analyzing themes without deciphering intention. It emphasizes the point of a text is the meaning you find in it, rather than what you think the author intended it to mean. And there's arguable pros and cons to this method of criticism, it's well known in the academic world.
However, fandom has often cited death of the author to treat the text as a real world filled with real people to be judged. Which misses the point that d.o.t.a. is not analyzing the text as "real", but specifically as a textual creation of structure and meaning. It analyzes worldbuilding and characterization as a work of fiction, rather than "the world is faulty so there must be a reason" or "this character does morally bad things so they are bad and headed for a downfall". Both of which are, as you say, actually watsonian reads (and projecting, besides).
Anyway, I very much agree with you, I'm just extremely tired of people using watsonian arguments to criticize characters and worldbuilding, and claiming it's "death of the author" and actual literary criticism. (AFAIK Watsonian/Doylist arguments aren't even recognized as genuine academic forms of criticism, they're just fandom terms, sigh.)
idk that i’ve ever seen watsonian/doylist used as academic terms (and a perfunctory search of jstor didn't turn up any examples), but the ideas map reasonably well onto gerard genette’s notion of narrative levels as laid out in his narrative discourse. watsonian analyses are ones that function at the (intra)diegetic (=in-universe) level, while doylist analyses function at the extradiegetic (=real-world) level.
genette also adds a third level, the metadiegetic, for the narrative within the narrative. using the sherlock holmes stories as an example, this would be like if you had a client explaining their story, which is the story as presented by the client as presented by watson as presented by doyle. thus you’ve got three “authors” of a single narrative, each with their own agendas and perspectives acting upon the text.
Maybe film would be better if everyone who wants to become a director were expected to first produce a silent film. Without intertitles. A film where the only tool they have is the moving picture.
Maybe then they'd learn to make films where WE CAN SEE.
It's not that I don't appreciate a bit of chiaroscuro, but there has to be enough chiar to o the scur.
love watching pre, idk, 2000 movies where there is "night lighting" that tells you it is dark but the director has paid lighting engineers enough that you can also clearly see everything

One of my favorite tropes is post apocalyptic towns being named after dilapidated signs with missing letters, like Novac (no vacancy) and Eaden (dead end). There’s something inexplicable about it

Are YOU gonna let THE GOVERNMENT tell YOU what YOUR GENDER is? That doesn't sound like Life Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness to me! PROTECT your individual FREEDOMS and call your senator: we want the GOVERNMENT to stay OUT OF OUR PANTS! GENDER FREEDOM NOW!
Two men in your neighborhood are married... to EACH OTHER? Congratulate them for exercising their AMERICAN RIGHT to follow the footsteps of our FOUNDING FATHERS! They've got a fully AMERICAN spirit of FREEDOM and REBELLION! GOD BLESS THE USA.
Your coworker has a different RELIGION from yours? Well, that's just INTERESTING and you should talk about it on your UNION-APPROVED LUNCH BREAK. The UNITED STATES OF AMERICA was FOUNDED on Freedom of Religion and ANYONE should be allowed to seek the AMERICAN DREAM!
You think someone might be in this GREAT country ILLEGALLY? NO YOU DON'T! No one is in this country illegally! The minute anyone steps on our SOVEREIGN SOIL they're your FELLOW AMERICAN and where they come from is NO ONES BUSINESS.
it's funny yeah, but guys this is actually how you reach the people who prefer these terms to frame all things Good and Correct.
