If i see that story of the homophobic dm held up as great dming one more time i will personally strangle every greasy neckbeard on /tg/
>people actually come into my inbox to defend this “rocks fall everyone dies” tier garbage DMing Aight then, time for a long post, so just hit J now if you don’t care. This is some straight up hack DMing, putting your players on a time limit that they’re not told about? Bad DMing. Doing so cause they don’t want to go along with your boring “kill the lich” plotline? Absolute railroady hack DMing please never play this game again. If you play for the sake of “beating” the players you’ve got the wrong philosophy, cause as the DM you can just go “rocks skeletons fall everyone dies, no rolls or responses allowed” like the dude in the story does, done, you’ve beaten the players and had your “gotcha” moment at the low cost of having a shit ending to your campaign. If you refuse to adapt to what your players want to do, just tell them to find a diffrent campaign, find people that are interested in your plot. don’t play a whole campaign for the sake of throw a temper tantrum at the end of it, thats immature and not good behaviour as a DM, and its just a waste of time, much like me writing this post is. Anyways i’m off to strangle some /tg/ dwellers.
man i hope you don’t actually play this game cause i feel sorry for any dm that would have to deal with you if you think the dm was the 100% bad guy in this situation
if you keep derailing the campaign and ignore the dm’s gentle to not so gentle nudges as to what the players should be doing for the campaign, the dm earns the right to dispose of the characters however they like
they are a writing and roleplaying partner in this, and if you ignore and disrespect them like this, and don’t just make your own game or leave, you have no right to be shocked or offended when they bite back or get mad at you
hi, gay dm here to say that the shit op said is real dumb.
“putting your players on a time limit that they’re not told about? Bad DMing.”
They were aware of it. They knew they needed to stop a lich before it brought upon a new age of darkness. This isn’t a fucking video game, the story doesn’t have to wait for you to pick it up as the Main Characters.
“Doing so cause they don’t want to go along with your boring “kill the lich” plotline? Absolute railroady hack DMing please never play this game again.“
My players are the absolute worst with guessing how my story should go, and often go the opposite direction of how they should go. that being said, they still are following the main storyline. If my players were to, after being dropped off on an uncharted continent where they have shit they need to take care of on said continent, build a boat to just leave the continent where all the campaign is supposed to take place, i am absolutely allowed to have all of them drown in the ocean.
There’s a difference between a DM railroading the party and a party just. not fucking participating in the story in any capacity and the DM having to do something about it.
“[you] had your “gotcha” moment at the low cost of having a shit ending to your campaign.”
if the players neglect the original storyline to just fuck off in the world, and the DM wants to punish that (which any DM would tell you is what most scenarios call for), then its just how the fucking game goes. also, you’re not playing it, so what the fuck does it matter to you?
“If you refuse to adapt to what your players want to do, just tell them to find a diffrent campaign, find people that are interested in your plot.”
They did adapt to what their players wanted to do, despite the fact that they were entirely disrespectful to the storyline. Dont know why your undies are in a twist about it.
“don’t play a whole campaign for the sake of throw a temper tantrum at the end of it, thats immature and not good behaviour as a DM,”
God you’re so fucking whiny. “Meh the story didn’t ended how I liked it so there for it’s bad despite the fact that I wasn’t the one playing it! youre a bad dm for having authority over the narrative!”
DMs are supposed to reward cleverness and curiosity and punish stupidity and impulsiveness. That’s all the DM did. The fact that you are upset about that shows that you’re probably one of the ones that participates in the behaviors that should be punished.
Also, funny that your claims of it being homophobic weren’t brought up at all in how it was bad, despite the fact that it’s the first thing you mentioned about it in your original post. Hmm.
Don’t ever play D&D. Please. For the sake of DMs everywhere.
I’m willing to bet that if the players offered even a token effort to engage in the main plotline, the DM would’ve allowed them opportunities to extend the Lich’s timetable repeatedly, allowing them to do both.
Instead, the players went “that’s stupid” and did their own thing. And the DM, who likely crafted a whole story for the players, got told to shove his campaign. Yeah, the DM had total control of the lich’s timetable, which is probably why they decided to end the campaign right at the most petty moment, because the players effectively told the DM to shove his campaign.
This is like the players starting a campaign by having the king call them to his castle, to ask for them to save the princess. Only, when they get there, “That Guy” decides it’ll be funny to stab the king because he’s “lol chaotic”.
One player derailed the DM’s entire campaign and you expect the DM to baby and coddle the players, as if you’re not allowed the punish players for stupid actions.
The key point that gets into this is shit and railroady (and at the time, outrage farmy by early /pol/, or muh D&D is shit crowd) and, not “realistic consequences”. The rest going along with it because (as he’s definitely trying to avoid to look as rosey as possible) it was obvious the rest of the group wanted to be rebels instead of herpaderpa kill teh BBEG in 17 levels.
In fact theres quite a bit that places this into the “and the whole bus clapped” file of thosng that TOTALLY happened.
Nobody cares if it’s real or not when we’re replying specifically to people who think it IS real and kick up a fit about it. It doesn’t matter if the DM lied or not because we can’t prove that either way. What we can prove is that there are people like the OP who use it as an excuse to call someone homophobic and the hypothetical an example of bad DMing.
Saying “and then the whole bus clapped” is irrelevant because we’re replying to the sentiment the OP has.
The DM set up a situation that required immediate attention. If the party is wanted throughout a city and they do side quests in the city instead of fleeing, you can’t expect the DM to just ignore the fact that the entire city guard are after them.
OP displays the worrying trait that they think a DM’s job is to coddle players and make sure none of them die or suffer consequences for their actions, no matter what actions they take.
That’s what people are reacting to. That and the fact that the DM wasn’t being homophobic, he was just being petty, despite the OP’s stupid accusation.
In the homophobia case OP is wrong, or at least going off of bad inference. But almost everything I’ve seen in the notes (and related posts) is that the DM wasn’t in the wrong. We both know he fucking was, and the obviously regular to /tg/ people back in that thread mocked him for it.
Was it homophobic, no. Was it railroady, you be your ass it was. Hell I could explain how OP is right on the homophobic part, through better context than OP’s anything where this sort of thing happens is homophobic through the history of 4chan at the time or just looking at how the post was done.
Hell the second post from the OP is he was a shit DM, and I’m inclined to agree, anon was as shit a DM as Elfslayer Anon was a shit player.
Wrong about it being /tg/ neckbeards who think it’s good DMimg though. We tend to laugh about it both on the r/thathappened nature, the fact that those of us there knew he got mocked hard (from choo-choo motherfucker to obvious play D&D folks pointing out his internal inconsistencies), and the fact it’s our own version of the “fun is a buzzword” guy. There’s a whole mess to unpack with it that shows it was likely a troll using /pol/ or /new/ leaking their shit to get (You)’s.
I’m fairly certain if it was fully railroaded then the players wouldn’t have been spending sessions working toward their goal. The DM would’ve forced the players back on the rails immediately.
Instead, they got to do their own campaign, with a conclusion at the end that, while petty, was within the DM’s own warnings.
So I’m going to have to disagree with you. Going purely by the metrics of the OP, I don’t think he was a bad DM. He was a DM who was petty after a single player derailed his storyline.
You can say “well if the other players cared that much, they’d have…”
Except we can’t infer that info from the screenshot. We’re reacting to OP’s reaction to the post, not adding more on to it.
How is it railroading to start the game with “this great evil is arising, if not stopped it will consume the world” and then the players ignore that threat, wreak havoc on the kingdom and have the bitey zombies consequences of their decisions come over for tea?
The lich didn’t just go away, shes not some mmo bad guy waiting patiently for the players to finish fucking around fishing and mining before enacting her “fuck the living ” plan.
This is quite literally the opposite of railroading. It’s allowing an immense amount of freedom. It allowed them the freedom to fuck up horribly. Railroading is when the freedom is removed.
The party chose to ignore the story, and they were allowed to.
The party created their own goal, and they were allowed to.
The party accomplished their goal, and they were allowed to.
Then the DM’s story showed up.
The DM literally allowed the party to do exactly what they wanted. But then they also recieved the consequences of what they wanted.
This is the exact opposite of railroading.
me:*fills a water gun with printer ink* me:i dont even need a wii u to have fun
if you bought a 16ml cartridge of ink at $18, and a 2500ml nerf super soaker barrage at $15.99, it would cost about $2,828.49 to fill it with ink once
What quote has transcended fallout: new Vegas (2010)?
PROBABLY that one
i fucking love how they’re attributed to ‘joshua graham’ as if that’s some sort of motivational speaker or beleaguered actor and not a dude in a video game shuffling guns around ad infinitum
Reminder that Fallout New Vegas also featured a character with the poetic name “Rose of Sharon Cassidy”, who said: “Nobody’s dick’s that long. Not even Long Dick Johnson, and he had a fucking long dick. Thus, the name.”
and the best part was that the fire “around” him was real fire, not a metaphorical fire.
he was quite literally set on fire and pushed off of a cliff.
it’s not even the best Joshua Graham quote

DND is a collaborative game. Players are rewarded when they’re smart and punished when they’re dumb.
Railroading is when you force the characters/players to do something. The DM didn’t force them to deal with the lich. In fact, he allowed them to do the side thing of making gay marriage legal. If anything, the players were the one arguably railroading.
It isn’t a hack considering they knew. If the players really don’t want to do the lich plotline, then that’s something to directly bring up to the DM, not just fuck around in the world. Otherwise, they had the option of not playing or playing the main story.
The DM didn’t refuse to adopt. He allowed them to do the gay marriage and rebellion thing and let that whole side thing play out. Railroading would have been not allowing them to do it at all. Hacks would have been if the lich was something they were never ever made aware of… but they knew about the lich and that it was time sensitive.
DND isn’t a game where any and all time is frozen until you pick up the main story. The main story continues whether you go with it or not.
Hell, if anything, one player railroaded the party into doing this rebellion and gay marriage thing and as a result pretty much everyone paid the price. It isn’t a “shit ending” when it’s one that’s brought upon the choices of the players themselves.
A DM is not required to change the entire plotline of their story/campaign just because the players want to fuck around. Some campaigns are just more serious than others in terms of how those choices end up affecting the outcome while in others you can dick around for a considerable amount of time with no consequences.
Choices end up having some sort of positive or negative consequence. In this case, it was very obviously a negative one considering that they knew what was going on, they knew what they had to do and instead decided to focus on doing gay marriage… As opposed to fighting the Lich and then returning to do the gay marriage thing using the fact that they killed an evil overlord as a way of convincing people to vote for them and blah blah blah
yall are homohobic and full of shit, the key here is that gay marriage is illegal and the very second it was to become legal is when shit went to hell. thats why we know yall are full of shit, i hope you all get brutally murdered, dragged behind pick up trucks till your legs are grated away
