They were aware of it. They knew they needed to stop a lich before it brought upon a new age of darkness. This isn’t a fucking video game, the story doesn’t have to wait for you to pick it up as the Main Characters.

My players are the absolute worst with guessing how my story should go, and often go the opposite direction of how they should go. that being said, they still are following the main storyline. If my players were to, after being dropped off on an uncharted continent where they have shit they need to take care of on said continent, build a boat to just leave the continent where all the campaign is supposed to take place, i am absolutely allowed to have all of them drown in the ocean.
There’s a difference between a DM railroading the party and a party just. not fucking participating in the story in any capacity and the DM having to do something about it.

if the players neglect the original storyline to just fuck off in the world, and the DM wants to punish that (which any DM would tell you is what most scenarios call for), then its just how the fucking game goes. also, you’re not playing it, so what the fuck does it matter to you?

DMs are supposed to reward cleverness and curiosity and punish stupidity and impulsiveness. That’s all the DM did. The fact that you are upset about that shows that you’re probably one of the ones that participates in the behaviors that should be punished.
Also, funny that your claims of it being homophobic weren’t brought up at all in how it was bad, despite the fact that it’s the first thing you mentioned about it in your original post. Hmm.
