I love this scene. It’s only about a second long but it makes me swoon and crash even harder when The Reckoning comes around. 

When Assumpta leaves for her date with Enda; not only does she say goodnight to Peter specifically but Liam, Donal, and Brian look at Peter when the door closes. There’s even a waning guitar rift (is that what that’s called? I’m no musician lol)

I also suspect that Fr. Mac and Brian were probably pretty observant after Missing You Already. Assumpta has that accident in the church (which was supposed to be locked hours prior). When Peter arrives to the festival he says “Fr. Mac says sorry about your eye, he’s praying for you.”

Surely Fr. Mac’s brows would have been raised at finding out Assumpta had been in the church. How on earth did Peter present that story to him?

Also, Fr. Mac clearly wants Peter gone yet Assumpta says she’s going to send the petition to the Bishop. Surely Fr. Mac would ask the Bishop who sent the letter and discovered it was Assumpta (unless she sent it anonymously).

Brian on the other hand witnessed how invested Peter was in Assumpta’s situation. While Peter would have done the same for anyone, I suspect watching Peter physically escort her into the kitchen was the final pin.

I can see the men with a glass of gin each. Brian saying “Your one in the pub and the priest” and Fr. Mac making a grim expression and giving a subtle nod.

That scene is so well-crafted, and the little ‘oh well, you’ve definitely missed your chance there, Peter, you idiot’ looks of pity from the lads are everything xD I’d say everyone knew practically as soon as Peter set foot into that pub for the first time - their bickering and chemistry is so palpable, how could you not? Coming from an Irish countryside village myself, people (especially back in the 90s when technology etc. was less prevalent in society) would really notice if something like that was brewing between two people who both clash and gel perfectly together. Gossip travels fast xD <3 <3 Father Mac probably knew for a long while, if not had his suspicions - didn’t help that the previous priest bolted from Ballyk for a similar reason, so Father Mac was probably on high alert to anyone getting distracted from their priestly duties xD 

Brian was always very all-knowing - being the shrewd businessman that he was, and between his connection to Niamh, and him being always around when the big events were happening, probably led him to see the little sparks that were brewing between the two of them.

The bloke (Conrad Veidt) was an outspoken opponent of antisemitism, and when he refused to divorce his wife (who was Jewish), Joseph Goebbels had him blacklisted.

He also donated tons and tons of money to poor children who had been negatively effected by the Blitz in London after he moved to the US, following his becoming a naturalised-British citizen after leaving Germany in the 1930s.

Don’t forget that in 1919, he starred in “Different from the Others”, a German film protesting the anti-homosexuality laws in place. It’s widely regarded as the first pro-gay film. Conrad Veidt was a goddamn hero.

He and his first wife divorced after… well she said it better than I ever could.

Conrad Veidt was an amazing human. To quote his wikipedia page: 

Veidt fervently opposed the Nazi regime and later donated a major portion of his personal fortune to Britain to assist in the war effort. Soon after the Nazi Party took power in Germany, by March 1933, Joseph Goebbels was purging the film industry of anti-Nazi sympathizers and Jews, and so in April 1933, a week after Veidt’s marriage to Ilona Prager, a Jewish woman, the couple emigrated to Britain before any action could be taken against either of them.

Goebbels had imposed a “racial questionnaire” in which everyone employed in the German film industry had to declare their “race” to continue to work. When Veidt was filling in the questionnaire, he answered the question about what his Rasse (race) was by writing that he was a Jude (Jew). Veidt was not Jewish, but his wife was Jewish, and Veidt would not renounce the woman he loved. Additionally, Veidt, who was opposed to antisemitism, wanted to show solidarity with the German Jewish community, who were in the process of being stripped of their rights as German citizens in the spring of 1933. As one of Germany’s most prominent actors, Veidt had been informed that if he were prepared to divorce his wife and declare his support for the new regime, he could continue to act in Germany. Several other leading actors who had been opposed to the Nazis before 1933 switched allegiances. In answering the questionnaire by stating he was a Jew, Veidt rendered himself unemployable in Germany, but stated this sacrifice was worth it as there was nothing in the world that would compel him to break with his wife.Upon hearing about what Veidt had done, Goebbels remarked that he would never act in Germany again.

As noted above, he was also bisexual, a friend once stating: “He was very much in love with a beautiful girl whom I trained. I’ll say frankly that Conrad also loved men, once in a while.“

I’d never heard of this before, so I looked it up.

The reason we’re certain it says “frogs” singular rather than just being an irregular noun (which was my first thought, especially since my dad was just lecturing me a few weeks ago on how Biblical Hebrew plurals aren’t nearly as regular as Modern Hebrew plurals because Modern Hebrew is more or less a conlang) is because in the first part of the passage God commands Aaron to call forth frogs, plural, but then the passage ends with Aaron calling forth frog, singular. So both forms are right there, they both exist.

The authority is considered to be Rashi (an 11th century French rabbi). He gives two explanations. 1) That a giant frog was called forth that covered all of the land of Egypt, and whenever the Egyptians struck it, it split into multiple frogs. 2) In some languages, some animals have both a regular plural form and a plural that’s the same as the singular (e.g. “fish” in English), so maybe that was the case for frogs in Biblical Hebrew.

The counter-argument to (2) is that the regular plural was used in the very same passage, which is why we need both explanations.

Rashi apparently gets this argument from the following Midrash (Biblical quotation in all-caps, Midrash in regular text)

AND THE FROG(S) CAME UP, AND COVERED THE LAND OF EGYPT. Rabbi Akiva said: It was only one frog, but this bred so rapidly that it filled the land of Egypt. Rabbi Elazar Ben Azariah said to him: ‘Akiva! What business have you with Haggadah? Leave homiletical interpretations and turn to Neg'aim and Ohalot! Indeed, there was one frog at first, but it croaked to the others and they came.’

The upshot of all of these interpretations is Aaron summoned one frog, but God provided many.
