It's been a lot of fun watching the votes on the worst/second best newborn experience polls because while there is some consensus, there are also votes that buck the trends.
So I've been sitting here thinking of what the arguments for and against would be. Alice Worst: No memory, no one to help her, has to figure it all out based on weird vision Best: No memory so no angst. Visions were a guide. Generally an optimistic person so coped better than most.
Carlisle Worst: abandoned, tried to starve himself, all alone, no one to explain anything to him. Best: I guess since there was no one around, no one forced him to drink human blood or told him he had to? So that's, uh, a blessing maybe? Edward Worst: Orphan who has to rely on his uncanny doctor, sudden mind-reading powers, absorbed and internalized Carlisle's own issues with vampirism Best: adopted by a nice rich doctor who became his hero. Materially comfortable. Cool power? Emmett Worst: left behind a big loving family, struggled with the vegetarian thing. Best: Met his soulmate, the most beautiful woman in the world. Also: super strength.
Esme Worst: frozen in post-partum state, grieving dead baby Best: 'saved' by the hot doctor she has has a crush on for 10 years, oh and he's rich, oh and he has a son she can put all her frustrated maternal feelings toward. Jasper Worst: forcibly recruited into a brutal vampire war Best: Wasn't alone, at least? Had, um, uh . . . a sense of purpose?? Rosalie Worst: Furious about what happened to her and that she can no longer have her dream of motherhood. Has to live with Edward. Best: Has a support system? Who don't stop her from taking her revenge. Materially comfortable.
