HiPOD: Smooth Sands in the Canyon of Youth

Juventae Chasma, just north of Valles Marineris, is notable for several reasons: it is an otherworldly size-box canyon, and shares a name with the mythological Fountain of Youth.

This image, from Juventae Chasma’s southern extent, captures the extraordinary visual softness of the sand on the bottom of the canyon. Unlike other places in Juventae Chasma where ripples and more bedrock landforms are visible, in this scene we can identify peaks arising from a base of smooth materials. Rather than the sand being grouped in well-behaved, Star-Trek-communicator-badge-shaped barchan dunes, the sand blankets the full surface below the two peaks captured here. The source of this sand is linked to the chasma’s complex geologic history, which likely includes a combination of icy, watery, and windy processes.

Today’s Exhibit of the Day? It’s one of the largest amethyst geodes in the world! At about 13 ft (4 m) tall and 9,000 lbs (4,082 kg), this giant weighs about as much as three compact cars. It was "born" when molten magma poured from the Earth’s crust some 135 million years ago. While its dazzling purple crystals might catch your eye, this geode would have originally been composed of colorless quartz—its distinctive amethyst color deriving from millenia of natural radiation, heat, and trace contaminants.

You can spot this geode, and other sparkly specimens, in the Museum’s Mignone Halls of Gems and Minerals! Plan your visit.

We need to speak much louder and more often for the women trapped in wars. The women in Sudan, Palestine, Congo, ukraine, Lebanon and many others. Joining mainstream male led movements and speaking from a gender neutral (male default) perspective isn't enough, on the other hand dismissing these women's issues under the pretext of "This is not a women's issue" is not just inadequate but it's a moral failure, an indirect support for these wars.

We need to make a dedicated spaces and exclusively talk about the gendered realities of war, the threat of violence, these women are facing from both the outsider and insider men. The challenges of menstruation, pregnancy, childbirth , maternal healthcare, educational access, domestic abuse, financial and countless other challenges.

*period pain is not supposed to affect your daily life. It’s supposed to feel more like an inconvenience rather than a medical emergency. If you are struggling to go about your life, if you can’t move due to the pain, if you’re bed-ridden for the majority of your period, then that is not normal and you need to find a doctor who is going to take your pain seriously. This obviously goes for anyone who experiences periods because unfortunately it’s not common knowledge that experiencing agonising levels of pain is NOT NORMAL!!!
