i hc that buck spent a lot of eddie’s probationary year trying to trick him into saying the q-word. out of spite in the first shift and then just because he thought it’d be funny for the rest. but somehow eddie managed to evade saying it each time. like buck pretended it was the answer to a crossword he was stuck on but then bobby called them for a meal before eddie could say it. this aligns with canon 4x06 because eddie just never clocked on to buck’s attempts. buck confesses one day years later and eddie’s just like is this why you made me list words that rhymed with riot that one time.
Hello I have a ship and sentence for you. For Buddie, naturally.
Buck regards the dog before him - large, with chestnut brown fur and these deep, brown eyes that stare into his soul, hauntingly familiar.
Naturally 🧐 I hope you enjoy where this went, beloved @diazsdimples 🫶
Buck regards the dog before him - large, with chestnut brown fur and these deep, brown eyes that stare into his soul, hauntingly familiar.
The resemblance is uncanny, but, then again, he’s probably just projecting his misery onto this poor stray. The way he misses his best friend like a limb—even when they’re in the same room.
Everything’s been turned upside down since-
The dog nudges its nose against his hand.
Buck squats down in front of it. “Hey, are you lonely, too?”
The dog lets out a plaintive whine of agreement.
He cups the sides of his new friend’s head with both hands and scratches lightly behind the ears. “It’s okay, buddy. We can be lonely together. Yeah?”
When the dog showed up in his backyard, barely twenty minutes ago, it was more than a little surprising. Not entirely unwelcome since Eddie isn’t coming around much these days. It’s like he can’t share the same space unless Chris, or one of their coworkers, is around.
“Where did you come from anyway? Do you have people out looking for you right now?”
Buck feels around for a collar, a mix of relief and sadness washing over him when he doesn’t find one. He doesn’t want to get attached and have another Blaze situation, but he’ll admit he’s grateful for the company. If he indulges himself another half-hour before making an effort to find the owner, that can be between him and the dog.
He eases himself onto the grass, stretching his legs out. The dog rests its head in his lap and Buck absentmindedly strokes through the silky chestnut fur.
“Do you ever miss your family? Like when everyone is busy and you know they’ll get around to you eventually but- you wish they saw you now instead. Especially- especially your best friend. Well, my best friend.” He pauses. “I don’t know what happened. He moved away last year, to go be with his kid, Chris. That kid is the coolest in the whole universe by the way, I bet you would love him. Anyway, I know he—Eddie— had to do it. It’s not that at all.” Buck sucks in a harsh breath. “It’s just, I feel like we were closer than ever when there was almost a thousand miles between us. Now, he’s home and-”
His voice breaks on his next words, threatening to take the rest of him with it. “I feel like a stranger. Like I don’t know what I’m doing or how to act around him anymore. What’s even worse is it’s like he can’t stand to be around me. Like someone else always has to be around as a buffer or something.” A single tear runs down his cheek as he quietly acknowledges a very real truth he’s been avoiding. “Maybe it’s because I had to go and fall in love with him. Maybe he knows and can see it all over my face when we’re together. I don’t know, can people tell that sort of thing? I hope not. I can’t lose him. Not again and not because of this.”
The dog sits up, puts one its giant paws on Buck’s left shoulder and licks his cheek.
“Thanks.” Buck huffs a laugh and rubs the dog’s back. “Humans are kinda dumb, huh?”
The dog tilts its head and Buck swears it has an eyebrow raised. Which is impossible because that’s not something dogs do.
Before he can overthink it, the dog puts the other paw on Buck’s right shoulder and licks a slobbery trail over Buck’s mouth.
“Eugh.” He falls back in the grass, taking the dog with him, and laughs. A sliver of sun peeking through the constant storms lately.
The dog settles on his chest, nestling its head under Buck’s chin. Maybe he can wait and they can stay like this just a little while longer.
not 9-1-1 related (shocker) but WHY did nobody tell me that Project Hail Mary is fucking DEVASTATING???? youre all traitors. bad bad bad bad bad bad bad bad
I always think its so interesting how shannon and ana are narrative foils. Eddie loved shannon so much, she was his best friend. But he couldnt love her as a mother. Ana was the perfect (step)mother to his son. But he couldnt love her romantically. Enters buck: someone who fulfils both roles, a coparent and a lover
"i heard some dick was being mean to ya" was, for me, definitive proof of eddie's feelings. it was so ridiculously affectionate, so familiar, so husband-like in its sheepish accountability and silent plea for forgiveness. yeah sorry about that douchebag from yesterday. i know he hurt you. i do that sometimes. may i offer you our son & our pepa in these trying times? <3 while i work through my instinct to cut people to the bone whenever i feel like an exposed nerve? <3 please forgive me i can't sleep
the thing about buckthena's dynamic is that i feel like there tends to be a compulsion to anchor their relationship to that of their individual relationships to bobby, in one way or another. either buck is bobby's child and therefore athena's child or buck is bobby's dog that athena kind of tolerates. and i think both views are kind of fundamentally misguided because buck and athena have always had their own relationship outside of bobby that informs their dynamic far more than reducing them to who they are to bobby. like, this duo has had their own dynamic since the literal pilot, before bobby and athena ever started dating. their relationship was founded on the ways that their similar strong senses of justice and stubborness combined with their divergent views on responsibility and accountability and authority lead to them clashing and then ultimately learning to respect and understand each other.
in many ways, while athena is often exasperated by buck and buck sometimes disagrees with athena's methods, they treat each other more as equals than people often give them credit for. they really love each other and have a friendship outside of bobby! buck goes to her when he wants to plan a surprise party and athena immediately takes maddie under her wing because she has an established fondness for buck! they sometimes solve cases together and get one another's heads on straight and yes, bond over their love of bobby, because he is someone that they both love. but more than that they're just like, two people who love each other, and i don't know that i need to analogize it in the terms of a nuclear family either way lmao.
kicking my feet and giggling thinking about eddie diaz who loves fatherhood and christopher and who is so brave and smart and kind and funny. eddie who loves his female friends and relatives and has interesting, developed relationships with carla and may and pepa and linda and hen. eddie who loves basketball and fighting and muay thai and video games. eddie who befriends anything that moves. eddie whose people skills save the day over and over - the kid in the well. the kid he got shot for. the kid he ran back into a burning building for when they read the number wrong. (eddie who loves kids). the guy whose heart he kept beating despite him threatening chris and buck and his whole family. the guy he talked into returning their engine. eddie who is so competent it has buck ripping his hair out when they meet. eddie who is cool and level headed with a gun to his head. eddie who got himself and his son out of his parents house when he was working three jobs to make ends meet. eddie whose whole Thing is taking care of people, so much so that his therapist has to tell him to cool his jets. eddie who just tries and tries and tries. eddie with the heart of fucking gold and eddie with more to give than he thinks anyone can take. eddie who is always going to fight to come home to his family. eddie who isn't alone anymore; hasn't been for a while. eddie who was raised so cold and grew up so warm. eddie, the light. the sun.

Bobby saying 'the department' has concerns about the blood thinners and not saying HE is worried about Buck is the same as Eddie always saying 'like we all do' when conveying a feeling to Buck
Anytime I rotisserie thoughts of Eddie dirty talking with Buck that is played straight faced, I start giggling immediately thinking about the math teacher Ana date and every single fail of his attempt-to-meet-someone montage. If that man is not attempting to talk dirty while trying to keep a straight face while failing epically because at his core, he is a dork,—albeit very pretty, but still a dork—then I don’t want it. And yeah it works on Buck but specifically because Buck thinks dork!Eddie, aka most-at-ease!Eddie, is endearing, and Buck probably is playing along until Eddie seriously asks, is this working for you? And Buck schools his face solemn, yeah, yeah totalllyyy totally, even though he’s mostly just smiling at Eddie while he tunes out what Eddie is actually saying and then just kisses him, and when they break apart Buck whispers something dirty right over Eddie’s mouth that actually isn’t awkward but incredibly smooth, and Eddie looks like he’s been hit over the head with a two-by-four but actually he’s just been hit over the head with Buck’s charm.
feeling insane about Marisol NoLastName's failed nun backstory today. what do you MEAN she dropped out of nun school but the only feelings she expresses about it is regret that it makes men look at her differently. she feels she has to hide it but keeps the framed picture around -- clearly it was important to her! why did she leave? did she enjoy it? did she choose it? was it forced on her and leaving was an escape? did she make any lifelong connections there? burn any bridges? did she choose to leave or was she forced out? is she still in touch with catholicism? you're really gonna drop this fascinating tidbit and then use it only to show that Eddie, like every other man in Marisol's life apparently, can't get over it?
