Manuscript Monday

this fic is fighting me (and so is my depression lmao) but anyway here is some more italy trip fic. Tagged by @bucksbabybelly @bucklesdiaz (and ghost tagged by @damnit-buck)

"Grandma is asking about dinner tonight," Chris says after about ten minutes into their trip.

"What is she saying?" Eddie asks, glancing between Chris and Buck. "Did you have dinner plans tonight?"

"She says there's like a seafood place right across the street from the hotel."

"Are we all invited or just you?" Eddie hates the reminder that his parents are in the same hotel, somewhere on another floor. He'd lost himself a little in the feeling of this being a little family adventure of just the three of them, not a side quest before his cousin's wedding. It makes his stomach churn unpleasantly.

"She said 'you guys,' so I think that means everyone." Chris shrugs.

Buck's face has shifted into a carefully constructed neutral expression, but Eddie knows him enough to know that he doesn't like it any more than Eddie does.

"Well, my only real plan was to go back to the hotel after we do Pompeii to nap and relax and then figure out dinner, but if you guys want to go…" Buck says, trying for diplomatic.

Eddie will not stand for it.

"Whatever we do, we're doing it with you," he says firmly. "We'll discuss it after our naps. For now," this he addresses to Chris, "tell your grandmother that we'll discuss it later."

"Okay," Chris shrugs, typing on the phone quickly.

It's been like this since they moved back to LA. Helena isn't reaching out to Eddie like this. She only sniffs around and then goes to Chris instead. She'd invited them to Christmas through Chris, only after she'd asked Eddie if he was scheduled to work Christmas—he wasn't. So when she'd texted him earlier, she was sniffing.

"She says they're at the Naples archeology museum right now," Chris informs, turning his phone toward Eddie to show a bad boomer selfie of Helena in front of an Ancient Roman fresco.

"Oh hey, that's from Pompeii!" Buck says as he leans even more into Eddie's space, giving him incredibly mixed feelings—he's starting to figure out what he feels for Buck, but it also feels so off the table the second he considers his family. Fuck.

Tommy's shifting back and his gaze dips again. "I like it," he says, gravel rough. His calloused fingers slide from Eddie's neck to his shoulder, toying with the bra strap. Tommy slips two fingers underneath it and drags the elastic down Eddie's shoulder. Pressing his mouth to the skin, Tommy kisses Eddie wetly. With a soft moan, Eddie's eyes flutter shut while Tommy pecks along the line of Eddie's shoulder to his neck. His lips are soft and warm, slightly damp as he brushes them over the hinge of Eddie's jaw. Turning into him, Eddie captures Tommy's lips in a deep, wet kiss. He loops his arms over Tommy's shoulders and pulls him in close. "Let me show you how much I like it," Tommy whispers. Hands sliding down either side of Eddie's spine until his hands are cupping Eddie's ass, thumbs rubbing over the lace almost uncontrollably. The thing about Tommy is that he always waits for permission. Perhaps it's the solider in him, ingrained to follow orders waiting for the direction. Or maybe he's just conscientious like that. Still, Eddie nods. "Okay," he rasps. Tommy's hands grip tightly to Eddie's ass, pulling him in impossibly closer. Their skin slides together but Eddie gasps as the lace drags over his nipples, between their chests. "God, hon," Tommy rumbles, "you're so pretty." "Not as pretty as you," Eddie purrs, almost jokingly against Tommy's mouth. If he weren't so close he probably wouldn't have heard the hitch of his breath or feel the way his cock twitches.

A long sort of quote but I absolutely love this fic. And I'm particularly fond of this imagery:

It's like a flower that hasn't even bloomed, a bud barely forming on a weak stem. It's a newly formed bubble, seconds away from bursting with the wrong current of air. It's a spider web of interwoven threads that are as delicate as they are beautiful. A home that they've built and destroyed a thousand times over. That they've rebuilt, strand by strand, thread by thread. That they're rebuilding again.

And from a wip (not as good a line I don't think but still)-

Something in Eddie's chest had cracked and Buck took root. A fragile little seedling sprouting in Eddie's heart and he hadn't noticed how it had grown into a vine twisting around his ribs, making it hard to breathe.

For the last goddamn time...

"Kill your darlings" means "if something is holding you back, get rid of it, even if it sounds pretty."

That's it! That's all it means! It means if you're stuck and stalled out on your story and you could fix the whole block by removing something but you're avoiding removing that thing because it's good, you remove that thing. That's the darling.

It does NOT mean

That you have to get rid of your self-indulgent writing

That you should delete something just because you like it (?wtf?)

That you need to kill off characters (??? what)

That you have to pare your story down to the absolute bare bones

That you have to delete anything whatsoever if you don't want to

The POINT is that you STOP FEELING GUILTY for throwing out good writing that isn't SERVING THE STORY.

The POINT is that you don't get so HUNG UP on the details that you lose sight of the BIG PICTURE.

Something Sentences Sunday!!

It's a good day to fight Helena Diaz. Have some presumed deaddie. We knew I had to include The Will:

“Isn't there some… some third party he could stay with in the meantime?” Helena asks with a frantic wave of her hand. “Foster care?” Buck stares at her in disbelief. The remaining piece of his heart begins to crack, fissures and chasms weaving through the muscle at the very idea of Chris being taken from him. And placed in the care of some stranger. Eddie believed no one would fight for Christopher as hard as Buck. And he was right.

“I just think it would be best until we determine Eddie wrote this under some kind of duress, or- or something,” she rants. “No.” Buck doesn't raise his voice. Doesn't rise to the desperation seeping through Helena's facade. “Excuse me?” Helena balks. “No,” Buck says again. “This is what Eddie wanted. I am what Eddie wanted; for both of them.” “But why wouldn't he–” She cuts herself off as she looks at Ramon, who's nowhere near as puzzled, much less outraged. “I'm sure he had his reasons,” Ramon says calmly. “Christopher loves Buck.” “He loves us,” Helena persists, turning back to Mr. Ramirez. “He was already living with us before all this.” Mr. Ramirez shrugs, helpless. “You took him from Eddie,” Buck snips. “He hasn't lived with you in months.”
