Did you hear the scientists have found a way to grow colored cotton? Thoughts?
Itâs not a âscientists have foundâ and much more âpeople have been already doing that for thousands of years and itâs just gaining more attention recentlyâ
Scientists didnât know. It should be âScientists just found outâ
Thereâs actually been a load of vitriol leveled against folks who try to raise traditional colored cottons, because a lot of cotton growers donât want the colored cottons cross-pollinating with their standard white cotton.
But anyway cotton can be grown in lovely natural shades of greens, reddish-brown ochres, and browns, all of which deepen with a good boil in water with a bit of washing soda thrown in.
The color obviously doesnât fade or run, because itâs not dye. Itâs the intrinsic color of the fiber itself.
I....I want clothes made out of those colors. They don't hurt my brain!
Arenât they lovely?
Iâm biased because I love the natural earth tones of many fibers, of course...browns, blacks, creams, copper-reds, ect...but I think theyâre just gorgeous.
https://www.vreseis.com/shop
If anyone wants to know where you can get yarn or cotton like this!
Scientists did not "just find out", and this is more of the same anti intellectual bs as the post that goes around claiming archaeologists were too stupid to know that hair could be sewn for elaborate styles.
Anyway, scientists DID figure out how to grow colored cotton. They genetically engineered it to be bright fuckin pink, and they didn't "just find out" about it, they already knew which is literally what inspired them to attempt the thing they just accomplished. Begging y'all to stop pretending that scientists don't know things, don't have interests, don't grow up in farming communities or have family who taught them this. Scientists are people. Do you seriously think people who use genetic engineering to make eco-friendly pink cotton don't know anything about textiles?
Anyway. Bright pink cotton without dyes, because science is awesome
Yes. CSIRO scientist Doctor Colleen MacMillan led the team that figured this out. They used tobacco plants for testing because of the genetic similarity. Basically if the tobacco leaves produced colors when injected with a bit of the experimental genetic material, the scientists on the team already understood that the color change would affect cotton bolls as well.
They grew bright red and bright yellow in a petri dish.
And yes, Doctor MacMillan knows lots of things. Here's a list of some of her publications.
@csirogram on Instagram
Additionally folks are researching how to create flame resistant cotton and black cotton. If a variety of black cotton becomes viable, it can stop a LOT of environmental damage caused by chemical manufacturing of black dye.
THIS. Every damn botanist I know, including myself, is at the least tangentially interested in fiber arts and indigenous methods behind things like that. Scientists have hobbies and we're all goddamn nerds so a lot of those hobbies are more niche. The anti-intellectualism is insane. I swear half of y'all think scientists are all evil cackling old men devoted to holding up colonial power systems. The work done by Dr. MacMillan is crazy cool and should be celebrated

have come to the realization that i dont like stories that are About Being Gay unless theyre About Being Gay in the aftg and half man sense where everyone is bipolar and lives in a crack house and beats each other
"drew" as neil's nickname for andrew
yes i'm a fan
he would NOT say that
every andreil fan can be divided into one of two categories. i know how i feel but i'm curious as to what the majority of people who see this would vote.
why do you view Dick Grayson as a trans woman? I might just be reading the wrong comics but I'm not super seeing the interpretation. It's obviously cool if you just have a trans version of Dick Grayson because you like it and trans women are cool, I'm just curious if you have any text that supports that or a run of Dick you see specifically as a trans woman above others.
well first off let me say - I don't ever have a Single Headcanon for a character, that's just not how I approach fandom. I'm a multishipper and I like to play the what-if game! which is an approach that has served me well in comics fandom where there sometimes isn't even one true Canon never mind one true Headcanon.Â
basically I just think it's a compelling direction for dick's character! dick is someone whose life is defined by layers of identity and performance and who has spent a lot of her life* falling into roles defined by other people, railing against them, trying to escape them, and then discovering that her escape was actually just another set of expectations. see: the transition from Robin to Nightwing, team lead; see: all the times she's played Batman and been objectively miserable doing so. also a character who is frequently self-sacrificing to the point of suicidality and who is given to fits of furious emotional self-sabotage in arguments (see the entirety of Murderer/Fugitive and every Dickroy argument ever put to paper but especially Outsiders '03.) ALSO a character with intense bouts of self-doubt and feelings of inadequacy. I don't it's a tremendous leap to say that there might be something beyond just the vigilante roles that she is trying to escape. you can read that in different ways, obviously - bruce's influence, various formative traumas - but the role of "Man" is also one that looms pretty large over anyone's life, and that you might try to escape in various ways if you didn't think transition was an option for you. like I don't think dick is even consciously closeted for years she's busy! and also she's not thinking about it. (sometimes not thinking about it really hard creates its own large and heavy weight that you are always consciously not thinking about.)Â
plus there's all of dick's struggles in relationships, which are of course partly vigilante lifestyle problems and partly dating people who are echoes of Bruce "emotional constipation" Wayne. but also you could read Dick's scrambling for the nearest "time to Be A Man And Husband" script when things start to get rocky, regardless of whether proposing makes sense for the relationship, as the actions of someone who is going through the motions of what she thinks she's meant to do and not what actually feels comfortable for her. it's really difficult to date when you are hiding from yourself!
and - this is just a little thing - but she grows a beard every time she becomes completely miserable and isolated and I like to read that as semi-unconscious self-sabotage via induced dysphoria. she doesn't feel like she deserves to look the way she wants to!
but no, this isn't coming from any particular run. because my mental conception of when dick finally lets the gender realization crash over her is some time after Bruce comes back from the dead, my comics evidence for this is just sort of. all of post-crisis comics. if you read enough comics about an often miserable man who swings back and forth along the pendulum of hypermasculinity depending on when the comic was written, it only makes sense to consider that dick might be trying on different masculinities and finding none of them a particularly comfortable fit. (relatable! I did the same thing with attempting to be a woman!) and then to consider that perhaps this miserable man might not be a man at all.Â
also on the "this is an interesting character direction side" I think it would create an extremely delicious tension in her relationship with Bruce for reasons I've talked about before. and it would do meaty things to her relationships with Donna and Kory, but especially Donna, who might I think have some complicated feelings about why Dick hadn't come to her with this earlier and what it means to be a Wonder Twin when Dick is no longer her male mirror. Donna has so many identity issues already! she would love gaining a sister and be nothing but supportive and lovely and welcoming. But she might have some private feelings about how to differentiate herself when she's already wrestled in the past with feeling like she didn't really have an identity of her own.
and of course it's fun to think about the potential fallout with the rest of the robins if the first one comes out as trans. both in Character ways and also in fun silly ways a la Tim trying to source gray market estradiol to beat Jason to the transition punch. consider also Damian, whose life has now been shaped by two very different very strong women.
plus I love Dick and as much as I like to turn on the blorbo blender 2000 I also do like to imagine a happy ending. and I think late-in-life transition is one of the happiest endings you can get. especially for a character who has experienced so much loss of agency over her body and mind, to get to remake herself in her own image that way? oh it's just euphoric. I think it would feel like flying, all the time.
this is so many paragraphs to boil down to mostly yeah I just think she's neat! come play in the space with me 𫴠let's rotate gorgeous middle-aged gearhead dyke dick grayson together.Â
*using she here since this post is about Dick as a trans woman, but like I said it's not the only reading I have for the character. so if you see me posting about Dick with he/him pronouns elsewhere I'm multi-track drifting.
okay I did go back into my various panel collections and find some ones that have The Vibes.
(New Teen Titans 1980 #29)
(NTT 1980 Annual #1)
(NTT 1984 #3)
also the entirety of the crutches storyline becomes exponentially more painful if dick is a trans woman because for once she's getting this warm familial love and pride she's never gotten from bruce and it's because Tommy Tevis couldn't have a son. like how much worse do all of her feelings of being a cuckoo in that nest become if she's not anyone's son at all!
(Nightwing 1996 #107)
(Nightwing 1996 #109)
(Nightwing 1996 #123)
and then of course this classic. agh.
Once i read all of golden age and silver age and bronze age and pre-crisis in general and post crisis and new52 and rebirth and all the different events and crossovers and learn all of the writersâ histories so i am aware of their biases and influences when creating those stories and familiarise myself with the cultural/social/political climate of when those comics were written to be able to understand and analyse them well from both a watsonian and doylist perspective itâs over for you all
Shit, the way things are going, racial slurs, racist jokes, and the N word have become socially acceptable too. The bar, already in hell, has gone lower and still!
dick is leaving voicemails like No thatâs fine ignore my call itâs not like i had anything important to tell you or anything. itâs not like iâm dying. even though i could have been. iâm not bleeding to death in an alley way or anything. but i could have been. and you would have missed the call. and all youâd have to remember me by is this voicemail. hope the concert was worth it tim
and heâs doing this with 643 unopened messages and 329 missed calls up his ass.
okay well heâs literally busy.
Sorry, but if Dick Grayson isnât a little bit in love with Bruce Wayne in your fic, youâre mischaracterizing him.

but on the real though, here is your guide to assyrian rice preparation from your friendly neighborhood assyrian:
start wanting rice. (or, if you are traditional, simply recognize your constant desire for rice.)
measure out two cups of rice. then one more. then two more. then another. this seems fine. you love rice. there is no way that this will backfire on you.
remember that your great-great-uncleâs recipe says it should be soaked overnight.
become consumed with despair.
decide to soak it for half an hour instead, acknowledging that the final product will be inferior and anger your ancestors but will still satisfy your now almost-overwhelming need for rice to be inside your body much faster.
remember that you should have set the water to boil when you soaked the rice. goddammit.Â
once the water boils, put the rice in until it is half-cooked. the eyeballing or intuitive method is less effective than a timer but thatâs how your aunt does it so you feel compelled to meet her standards.
now that the rice has fluffed up, realize how much rice six dry cups really is. holy shit. youâve fucked up immeasurably.Â
take a minute to dwell upon your failings.
grease a baking dish with butter. this will never be as elegant as you want it to and your fingers will get greasy, but the slightly shameful, self-indulgent joy of licking your fingers afterwards will make up for it.
pour the rice into the dish. wonder immediately if you actually buttered the dish beforehand and if youâve just fucked up.Â
melt approximately one thousand pounds of butter in the microwave and pour it over the rice, pondering your imminent death from rapid-onset arterial clogging. put a small pat of butter on the top to properly gild the lily.
put your pan into the oven, which you have absolutely preheated after your previous lack of foresight. shake the rice once or twice while it bakes to make sure the butter is well distributed. resist the impulse to climb into the oven with the rice. for the last ten minutes, sit next to the oven and count the seconds until itâs done.
remove the dish from the oven. shed a tear or two at the perfection laid before you. if you are dining with others, this is the time to serve the rice while making passive-aggressive statements about how oh no, you donât need any help, you just made dinner all by yourself, you can serve everyone as well. (this is still fun if done alone, but optional.)
CONSUME THE RICE.
realize that you have eaten half of the dish in one sitting. no matter how much rice you made, this will always happen.Â
put the leftovers away, if there are any, and enjoy a cup of chai while marveling at the amount of food you have just eaten. if possible, fall asleep in an armchair, sitting up, head tilted slightly back, like a grandpa.
for the rest of the evening, think fondly of how much rice you have in the fridge now and how many meals it will supplement, refusing to acknowledge that you will almost certainly eat the rest of it in a few hours for a midnight meal.
i really played myself with this post huh. every time it gets a note i start wanting rice.
for anyone who wants it, here is my familyâs actual recipe for assyrian baked rice:
1lb / approx. 2 â cups basmati rice (any long-grain rice will do)
3 tbsp salt
8 tbsp / 1 stick butter (you can reduce this if you donât want to have a heart attack)
Put the rice in a pot and cover it in cold water and salt. Let it soak overnight. (If you donât have the time to soak it, rinse the rice with cold water until it runs clear.)
Edit: The reason you want to soak basmati and other aromatic rice before cooking is to preserve more acetylpyrroline, the compound that gives aromatic rice its characteristic scent and flavor. Soaking rice allows the grains to absorb water, which reduces the cooking time, which means less time for the acetylpyrroline to cook off. Itâll still taste pretty good if you canât do this, but you donât want âpretty goodâ, you want mind-blowing, so for that perfect flavor youâll want to soak your rice overnight. The soaking process also washes away the layer of starch on the outside of the rice, which allows the grains to separate rather than sticking together; this is why you want to rinse your rice thoroughly if you donât have time to soak it.
Preheat your oven to 325°.
Boil three quarts of water in a separate pot. Once itâs at a fast boil, drain the rice and add it to the water. Boil for 5-7min or until one grain tastes half-cooked, but not soft. Pour the rice into a colander and rinse with cold water.
Edit: This step also helps get rid of any remaining starch on your grains, for perfectly separated rice. If your colander or strainer has large holes, you can put a paper towel/cheesecloth/clean dishcloth on the inside in order to drain your rice. Pour carefully if youâre using a paper towel, though, and put a bowl underneath your colander; I once lost a heartbreaking amount of rice when my paper towel got oversaturated and tore open.
Liberally grease the bottom of your baking pan with some of your butter. Pour the rice on top. Melt the rest of the butter in the microwave and pour on top of the rice.
Bake for 45min. (If you like, cover the rice for part or all of the baking time, but I find it gets less crispy on top if you do this.) Shake the pan a couple times during baking to ensure that the butter distributes throughout the entire dish.
Eat.
Serves four. Can easily be scaled up if needed (or down, but why would you do that?). Best enjoyed with a nice cup of chai.
