So I started reading this ✨ totally normal spaceship story ✨ about 30 hours ago (because of this weirdly effective meme) and it has completely consumed my brain. I don't know when the last time was when I was this just mercilessly gripped by a story (particularly a written story!! I'm one of those voracious reader kids that grew up into an illiterate adult!). I went 0-60 hyperfixation so freaking fast. I'm not even done (there's almost 130 chapters now and I'm in the 60s).

This thing has had me on the edge of my seat chewing my nails gasping screaming etc the whole time. I'm usually not even a sci-fi person! I'm certainly not typically a thriller person! But I have got to hand it to Derin! This is seriously phenomenal! I am shaking in my boots! Can't wait to see what else happens on this completely normal definitely not cursed space ship!!

Aight so I have like, a hypothesis on why this seems to keep happening, especially specifically to those kids who read so much and then grew up to read so little (like me, the ADHD driven library addict that spent my formative years with my left hand reserved for whatever book I was reading at the time, and now I only read with audiobooks at work).

And this is just a hypothesis, of course, and I don’t have a way to reasonably test it. But—

As a kid, I consumed so many books in such a short period of time because I was brand new into the world, and each story introduced new concepts and new ideas framed in new and unusual ways, things I had never experienced before, like love triangles and strange space guns and fairy tales turned on their head and blessings that turned out to be curses.

As I grew older, and 1) had less time for reading and 2) grew more familiar with typical story beats and information, it got more difficult to stay focused on new stories. Each book is still unique and has its own benefits and interests, of course, but for those of us whose youth was defined by rapid, intense consumption of new information, looking for the nuance that sets one romance or fantasy story aside from another was not as interesting or engaging.

Then comes along this book. And all the other stories Derin writes (Copy/Paste is one of my favorites). The focus of the story isn’t just on nuance and a few interesting ways to revisit old topics, but absolutely chock-full of entirely new ways of looking at the world, at social rules, and at personal relationships and understandings. The main character is a wonderful mysterious mess, alien to us and our ways of thinking and yet just close enough to be recognizable as well.

That sheer volume of new concepts is exactly what my idea-starved brain was looking for, and so I chewed my way through it and all the other stories as well. The perfect snare for a mind that needs extra engagement in order to stay focused.

(Other books that did this for me lately are Murderbot and Children of Time, highly recommend.)

Aspen isn't alien-but-just-recognisable. Aspen is who I want to be. Please raise me in an anarchist eco-commune into a dryad¹ sociology professor who'll sleep securely in a tree and whose every cultural practice acknowledges the... I'm having trouble finding words for it in English, the nature of nature, and us as part of it, without the hangups we readers are used to. The Arboreans relate to nature, and to their own and each other's bodies, and to home and "family", exactly like I'm comfortable with.

The citrus allergy would sting a bit, though. Love oranges.

¹: I'm aware this is not the polite term, and since it doesn't apply to me (could it?) I should not use it, but Aspen never told us the term people without D-word privileges should use. I didn't specify non-binary because I suspect "dryad" is a reclaimed(?) slur for a specific kind of non-binary Arborean. If Derin could clarify I'd love that.

Oh yeah, 100%, that’s something I was thinking but forgot to mention. It’s alien but recognizable, and more than that, the bad things are familiar, and the good things are a *dream.* It’s like [potential spoilers]

the catharsis of being dropped into a fantasy powerscaling universe except instead of the power to fly and shoot fireballs the character you’re reading about gets the power to think about people in kind ways and come from a nature-based society and be naked without being inherently sexualized.

And more than that, it’s a world where pronouns and orientation and gender are just… that. No inherent stress of being misgendered or mislabeled, people have whatever odd and interesting identities they want and it’s just… normal. You can have that in stories set in the modern day or the past, but there’s often a disconnect because it’s just not the reality we live in at the moment.

But this world is set in the future, and it’s a future I want to be in, even with all the chaos and Very Normal Spaceship stuff going on. It’s a speculative future story where the queers won, fully and totally. You get to read about what that kind of world might look like, and it’s wonderful how different everyone is.

And then, of course, there’s the drama.

It’s just such a good story.

Since Thursday our politicians have been trying to rush the 'Kids Online Safety Act' (KOSA) and SCREEN acts alongside 15 other bills through committee in order to censor the internet while lying about it being for child safety. It was such laws that allowed the UK, Australia, and Europe to become the hellholes they are where youre arrested for mean posts.

Sadly, our same leaders are also trying to repeal Section 230 alongside these bills. What Section 230 does, in simple terms, is categorize stuff you make online as part of your freedom of speech.

If they aren't stopped they will strip that from you. Be wary.

ICE came in two SUVs to try and grab a pregnant mother who was picking her other child up from a west Oakland (like three miles from my house) elementary school yesterday afternoon. Neighbors and other community members immediately boxed the ICE vehicles in with their own cars, surrounded the “officers,” and harassed them until they left (without their target). This is the only kind of response that’s acceptable from anyone witnessing this shit, and as Oakland Councilwoman Caroll Fife said after the incident, “there were too many white people around for them [ICE] to stick around.”

Fellow white people: if you’re able, put your bodies/vehicles/voices in between these kidnappers and their targets, ESPECIALLY if you look “respectable” (eg soccer mom/dad, business attire etc). They’re much, much less likely to engage violently with individuals and crowds who look like ppl they respect/view as human (white/white passing) so use their prejudice to your advantage.

Also: Karen the FUCK outta them. Eg. “I want to see badges and identification containing your full name and title, I want the names and contact information of your direct supervisors, I want to see a warrant signed by a judge that includes the full legal name of the individual you are attempting to detain, and I want to see these items now.” Speak loudly but as calmly and firmly as possible, don’t touch them but stay in between them and whoever they’re trying to grab if possible. Repeat.

Also, if you are an employee of whatever location ICE is entering to get somebody, you can do the following:

- Straight up refuse them entry. Not all workplaces will allow you to do this (e.g. I work in a public library and can't do that) but if you are on private property you can straight up tell them to GTFO or get trespassed by the cops.

- Announce their presence over the PA system. Say "Will the ICE agents who just entered the building please come to [your department] immediately?" and anyone else in the building is going to be made aware that ICE is here and that they're likely to be headed towards wherever you asked them to go, giving them time to escape if necessary.

- Be strict about weapons policies. If your workplace only allows LEOs to carry weapons, ask to see their badges, and ask to copy down their badge numbers and names, too. Take your time doing this, waste their time with as much bullshit red tape as you can muster.

- Be VERY strict about harassment policies, and make it clear to the agents that you will not tolerate them harassing or detaining patrons of your establishment unless they show you a warrant signed by a judge. If they have one, ask to photocopy it "for your records," again making sure to waste as much of their time as possible. Let them know that you will call the cops if they attempt to apprehend anyone without a warrant, and follow through on that if they try it. Tell them it's "policy" if they object. (It doesn't matter if it's actually policy, you can just lie to these assholes.)

- If you manage to repel them from the building, they might try to hang around the parking lot to snatch people as they exit. Make it clear to them that "loitering" is not permitted and they have to vacate the premises if they are not there for legitimate purposes.

for people who work at schools, hospitals, and churches: in January Trump removed a Biden-era protection on these places from ICE. I found out by learning a hispanic family one school district over was abducted while picking up their kids from school. I live in the north. I live in a very liberal area. Do not think you live in an area of the country where this doesn't happen- you're probably less than 100 miles from a border.

TLDR of this article:

- establish or have at hand a written policy on which areas are private. the fourth amendment protects people only in areas where they have a "reasonable expectation of privacy," so ensure there's no wiggle room to exploit.

- double down on document privacy. officers are allowed to inspect anything in "public view"- including screens or papers visible from waiting areas. without a warrant, they cannot move or expose anything, so even flipping papers face-down can protect people.

- avoid collecting immigration information when possible. no one can give information they don't have.

- provide educational materials for patients. this source suggests know-your-rights cards that can be handed out to patients, advising them not to give up any information and insist on their rights to a lawyer.

- designate an "authorized person" to review warrants and give access to private areas if necessary. without a warrant, only an "authorized person" can give consent to allow officers into private areas, but if not designated, anyone can be an authorized person. this involves training staff not to accidentally give consent and to direct officers to the authorized person.

- talk to your coworkers about this. conspicuously leave printed copies on the break room table, start conversations about it.

- if you can't stop them accessing an area, obfuscate and delay them. you need to check policy on this one, and the computer isn't loading, and you can't find the authorized person, you're so so sorry but this is gonna take a bit, etc.
