Meet the Artist/Writer!

Decided it was time to revamp my blog a little bit.

So hi, I'm Dis aka DisillusionedDanny! If you're looking at my blog, it's probably because you've read my fanfic on Ao3!

I'm not gonna lie, I don't create very many original posts on Tumblr, I mostly use it for reblogs and whatever interests me. But every so often, I'll take prompts, or I'll post drabbles. If that's something you're interested in seeing more of, let me know :)

Above you'll see some of my favorite things, plus fun facts about me, like I work in criminal justice reform! I specifically look at data and help conduct research for the organization I work at.

I've got two cats, Artemis and Apollo, I'm addicted to Dr. Pepper and love to listen to true crime podcasts when I'm not reading or writing.

The miscommunication in Heated Rivalry is because they're living in different romance types to begin with:

Shane: In some sort of Austen-esque existence where hjs ill-advised flirtation with a notorious rake goes too far. Scandalised by the intimate use of first names he flees, concerned what society and his goodly parents will think, his reputation at stake. He tries to find a proper marriage prospect but alas his heart is lost to the rake! But he finally follows his heart and invites Ilya into his home too (and accepts first name usage!)

Ilya: Smoldering in mirrors and out of windows and getting emotionally wuthered screaming Shane's name on a moor. My man is byronically going through it gothic style

i know that in role model/the long game troy and ilya mostly bond over secretly being nicer and softer and gayer than people realise, BUT i choose to believe that one day (maybe post the stanley cup the centaurs win with the power of friendship) the team all goes out to the club and there’s throwback edm hits playing and troy and ilya’s fuckboy party personas activate like fucking sleeper agents and they have the biggest night of their lives together

Some old fart retired hockey player goes on ESPN and does an interview where he talks about how gay DEI initiatives are unfair and are ruining Hockey by keeping the good ole boys from getting their chance to prove themselves on the ice.

Ilya, as the captain of the gayest NHL team, is asked for comment on this. Of course, this is half way through the season while the Cens are sitting first in their division and second in the league. So Ilya says, “Ah, yes, I can see how he would think that. It seems unfair that being queer is clearly such an advantage for hockey players. We are just much better players, and having so many of us on one team, while very fun and nice for us, does seem to be putting us above everyone else in the standings. Perhaps more teams could play well if they had gay players? The Admirals are okay, but they only have one and we have four, so it is not quite fair.”

There is a rampant debate online over whether Ilya actually understands that the original comments were homophobic or if he genuinely believes that people think gay guys are too good at hockey. People also start speculating about who the fourth gay player is because Luca hasn’t actually come out publicly yet.

Scott Hunter has to put out a statement that he doesn’t believe his homosexuality has had any impact, positive or negative, on his athletic ability even though he believes being out of the closet and in a fulfilling relationship has made it easier to focus on the game.

Troy posts a tweet that just says “got gayer and got better”

Shane puts up a post with pictures of every time he won the Stanley cup and the caption “I’ve been gay the whole time and I’ve been great the whole time” with a shrug emoji.

“Shane Hollander deserves to crash out at Troy Barrett-“ NO HE FUCKING DOESN’T-!? Guys are we serious? Are we being fucking fr!? Okay, first of all, they barely know each other, they only know each other because Troy Barrett is Ilya Rozanov’s best friend eventually and he was invited to their wedding. Second of all, Shane Hollander does not GAF!! He literally does not care about this man, beyond the support he gives his husband, and a little jealousy he gets to play on the same team with him and stuff. Third, Troy Barrett was not “allowed to be angry and then got a cute little redemption arc like that fixed everything-“ he was FORCED to be homophobic and that made him angry, but he wasn’t ALLOWED to be angry at his teammates or his dad or whoever else, so instead he channeled it into something his teammates would respect and leave him alone about; so he wouldn’t GET DISCOVERED AS GAY!! Aka, being a rude asshole, chirping and the occasional casual (he pretends, it is SO not casual) homophobia. Because what I think a lot of people forget, is that Troy Barrett, contrary to every other eventually out queer player, not only does not initially have a support system (barring his mom, who’s literally on a vacation around the world with Troy’s money, which, good for fucking her, but she’s not actually THERE), but is in an environment that is possibly the most actively homophobic team, with possibly the most homophobic asshole EVER, his best friend. Dallas Kent. WHO HE GENUINELY CARES ABOUT PEOPLE!! And let’s not forgot the dad who, oh yeah, what was that, loves Dallas Kent more than his own son and is ALSO clearly homophobic and looking down on him even without that. And wow!! Look, it’s a cheating boyfriend!! :D!!

Look, I love Shane Hollander, and I’m not saying his life wasn’t hard, but Troy Barrett gets out of his toxic environment, with his toxic team, toxic bestfriend, toxic bf to be constantly reminded of and eventually his toxic dad and into a supportive environment, with good energy and a nice crush, eventually boyfriend. And look at that!! He stops being homophobic (let’s be real, he never actually was, but he stops being it at other players without constant pressure to BE IT/DO IT!!) and try’s to unlearn being an asshole, and is an incredibly nice, supportive boyfriend and a good teammate and people really like him, and he apologises to the guy he especially messed up with (Ryan Price, sweet guy) and takes accountability and doesn’t expect to be forgiven??

And even beforehand, it was picked up by people (everyone say thank you Eric Bennett) that he was (at least mildly) uncomfortable with Dallas Kent and trying his best to be nice and supportive to the only active gay player in the league out yet, Scott Hunter.

Guys. Pack it up. It’s not a competition. But if it was? Between Troy Barrett and Shane Hollander? I’m pretty sure Troy Barrett wins. Considering one’s team, parents, best friend, and boyfriend were all initially supportive of him. Okay, scratch that, his team wasn’t, but they were willing to TOLERATE (ffs Montreal Metros, sybau, okay? Fucking casually homophobic LOSERS) him, which is much, MUCH more than Troy’s team would ever do for him, and well. Yeahhh-…let’s not talk about the rest of that-though at least he has his mom, yay!!

Ahem, anyways: thanks for coming to my TED talk, please stop acting like Shane Hollander is some kind of moral superiority or smth, it’s icky. Love him, but disgusting to see the fans who act like that, bsffr.

At some point after the cottage but before the public outing TMZ does an article on “Ilya Rozanov’s most high-profile hookups” which is essentially just a list of Instagram models with paparazzi shots and blurry cellphone pics of Ilya at the club. Shane scrolls through it, absolutely seething, because he is Ilya’s most high-profile hookup - maybe not by their metric, which seems to be Instagram followers, but Shane hasn’t heard about a single one of these women, apart from Svetlana whom he wouldn’t have recognised if not for Ilya talking about her. The guys are talking about it in the locker room, as if Ilya’s a legend for getting with all of these supposedly very desirable women (although that is decidedly not the way the guys phrase it) and Shane is absolutely furious because he can’t tell anyone that none of these women got to keep him. He is the only one who’s gotten to call Ilya his. He is the only person Ilya’s been in love with.

Anyway, after the next Boston/Montreal game Ilya shows up to practice genuinely looking like he’s been mauled. His entire body is covered in hickeys and bruises that look suspiciously like bite marks - his neck is basically covered in purpling marks with a fair few centred on his chest but a couple of the bruises trail further down, one on his pubic bone, a couple on his thighs, and the darkest one on his hip, a large circle of clear teeth marks - not only that but his back has been practically scratched to ribbons. Ilya is basically a walking sign spelling out “TAKEN - BACK OFF” and when the gossip of Ilya Rozanov apparently having been locked down by a wild animal reaches the Montreal locker room Shane can’t help the proud little smile that blooms on his face because, yes, that’s his man.

The thing is, until you get past the mindset of "justice=punishment" you will never be able to create lasting change. We have actual proof that punitive justice creates more crime and makes criminals more violent. We have actual proof that rehabilitation reduces crime and recidivism. But some of y'all are so stuck on this idea that the wrongdoer must be punished for justice to be done that you will choose sating your need for revenge over actually moving toward a better world every time. And that's sad!

Everyone in the notes saying punishment doesn't undo the bad thing: exactly! Punishment does not create or preserve healing, prevention, protection, fairness, or goodness. The only thing punishment does is satisfy a sadistic public desire for revenge and give us the illusion of control.

To follow up with this, i work in criminal justice reform, we’re seeing major changes and showing that alternative routes work. There are non profits all across the country that focus on restorative justice and addressing base level needs such as mental health, substance use, and poverty and the people who have criminal offenses who get these needs addressed are less likely to reoffend than those who 1. Don’t get those needs addressed and 2. Are sent down the more punitive route.

Not only that, but people are so hung up on the idea of recidivism that they don’t recognize that there is a better, more holistic view which is called desistance. Which I recommend looking into because it’s a much more accurate way to show that people who get these rehabilitative services are straying further and further from the criminal side of things.

But people like OP said, are so focused on this sadistic desire for revenge they can’t be bothered to look and see that there are other avenues that work better but are largely ignored by the general public because they aren’t punitive.

yeah the reason ilya’s depression gets worse in ottawa is not because he hates ottawa and hates the centaurs. like don’t get me wrong it doesn’t help that he’s suddenly in a new place and on a shit team. but that’s not the problem. the problem is that he’s spent almost a decade playing the game of ‘well if i had what i wanted then i’d be fixed’ and then he got what he wanted - his dad is gone and he doesn’t have to go back to russia or have contact with his horrible brother and shane loves him and he loves shane and they’re going to be together now - and unfortunately it didn’t fix a damn thing
