just. breathtaking. imagine if your primary reference for the concept of the un-personing of prisoners was (check notes) a book series about owls.
This is why it's important to Include stuff like this in fiction, especially ya fiction. It can be a lot of sheltered and/or indoctrinated children, in the case of a lot of rural "Christians", first introduction to these types of concepts in a way they can understand.

I was once listening to one of the ten billion animorphs podcasts out there, with two hosts, one who'd read Animorphs as a kid and one who was reading it for the first time as an adult. For those who don't know, Animorphs is a war story in which a handful of children have to secretly hold off an alien invasion until the "good" aliens arrive to save Earth. It starts off with fairly clear-cut Bad Species of aliens and Good Species of aliens but as the series goes on it becomes clear that there is no such thing as a good, clean or glorious war, that a clean Good Side and a clean Bad Side is usually propoganda, that heroism is a matter of circumstance and that war will chew up and spit out even the victorious; there are no winners in war, just the side that lost less.
It's a lot, for books aimed at eleven year olds who want to read about kids turning into fun animals.
On the podcast, the two (American) hosts happened to get onto the topic of the post-9/11 Iraq War and their reactions to it. They were both children at the time and as such could not be expected to have particularly nuanced views of US military policy. The person who hadn't read Animorphs was unsurprised by the declaration of war; that's what you did. Someone attacks America, America goes to war. That's how a country protects itself, through military revenge. The Animorphs fan, about the same age, had been devastated and against the war from the start. War was a Big Deal and, while sometimes unavoidable, should be a last resort; a lot of people were going to die, and a lot more were going to get hurt, and no matter how the war shook out it was still going to be horrible. They attributed this perspective, of course, to the series that had taught them about the horrors endemic to war in an engaging way at such a young age -- to Animorphs.

I honestly donât understand why there arenât more people who, when given the platform to discuss minimum wage, donât simply distill it to the simplest of facts:
A forty hour work week is considered full time.
Itâs considered as such because it takes up the amount of time we as a society have agreed should be considered the maximum work schedule required of an employee. (this, of course, does not always bear out practically, but just follow me here)
A person working the maximum amount of time required should earn enough for that labor to be able to survive. Phrased this way, I doubt even most conservatives could effectively argue against it, and out of the mouth of someone verbally deft enough to dance around the pathos-based jabs conservative pundits like to use to avoid actually debating, it could actually get opps thinking.
Therefore, if an employee is being paid less than [number of dollars needed for the post-tax total to pay for the basic necessities in a given area divided by forty] per hour, they are being ripped off and essentially having their labor, productivity, and profit generation value stolen by their employer.
Wages are a business expense, and if a company cannot afford to pay for its labor, it is by definition a failing business. A company stealing labor to stay afloat (without even touching those that do so simply to increase profit margins and/or management/executive pay/bonuses) is no more ethical than a failing construction company breaking into a lumber yard and stealing wood.
Our goal as a society should be to protect each other, especially those that most need protection, not to subsidize failing businesses whose owners could quite well subsidize them on their own.

when i came out as trans i had an old friend from my church days message me to congratulate me and ask me for my name and pronouns. and i was shocked tbh cause he was such a head-deep-up-the-churchâs ass kind of guy so i was super wary.
and after digging a little deeper i found out that he was very supportive of transness, saying that trans men are men and trans women are women

So funny thing, the Iranian government unironically takes up this position. Trans women are allowed to medically transition, legally transition (only after undergoing surgery however) and even participate in womenâs sports. I used to work with preschoolers and as a consequence watch parents work with their preschoolers so I kind of in my head often compare it to that.
You canât let a preschooler wander off into traffic naked even though many of them would very much like to do that. At the same time though you also shouldnât yell at them for struggling when they canât figure out how to tie a knot because thatâs a hard task and theyâre like three.
No you canât go out in the rain without a coat on. I know you donât like sleeves but you donât want to get cold and wet either do you? But you do want to walk to church and see your friends. Sometimes weâve gotta do things we donât like to avoid things weâd like even worse. But you get to see your friends once we get there.
And sometimes youâve gotta talk to yourself like youâre a preschooler. And it weirdly works.

Why is that. What is this feeling.
I'll hear the struggles of growing up in a much less trans accepting society, or growing up not knowing being trans is a thing at all.
There's this odd feeling of envy that holds onto my soul, as if desiring to grow up like that, even if objectively worse.
Sort of like a lingering thought that my experience isn't equal to that.
There's almost a sort of nostalgia for a time I cannot experience, for an era that passed before I was here, for a place I never was.
I'll hear stories of abuse and horrible things, traumatic events no one deserves to go through.
I know logically that I shouldn't want that, but there's that creeping strangle hold on my soul that tells me that my mundane, straightforward existence is worth so much little compared to the suffering of others.
Its the sort of part that lies to me, discounting any form of struggle I may have gone through. It's not any better that I have lots of struggles with memory.
The fact that I began to take some form of action about my gender in 2022, expressing myself and finding groups, should be positive, working things out in my teenage years.
But that nagging part of me tells me that I'm invalid or haven't struggled enough because I figured it out "too quickly", even if I had spent the previous years in a quiet gender crisis.
Lots of mental health issues, that I'm still attempting to overcome, surely come into play. Depression, Self loathing, Anxieties and dysphoria all coming together in a mix that can most likely be labelled as imposter syndrome.
This feeling seems to crawl its way through up through my mind when I engage in trans stories, either real or fictional.
But I still love to consume these stories. Even when these terrible feelings invade my mind, more emotions seem to come along. There's an inherent beauty to this stories, someone putting themselves on display.
Hearing all of these bring new perspective. I can empathise with the parts that I find myself in, and gain more understanding from the parts that don't align with me.
And even if my own story is really "mundane", or if I haven't gone through nearly as much suffering as someone else, I'm still valid, I still have a story.
Even if someone had the easiest transition, perfect support, no judgement, no doubt, complete acceptance, they still have a story worth sharing.
Me but with both my transness and also being goth. I get super jealous of 80âs and 90âs goths having a closer circle, more of an insular scene, not being gentrified and commercialized and sexualized all the time. At the same time, they had to deal with intense bullying, persecution, (hate crimes?), running from the satanic panic. Almost having to move like a secret society for safety . In some weird emotionally masochisric way I wish I was around for that but I also probably donât in practicality. Same thing with being trans too as you covered. Even if I do struggle greatly relating to it (living a double life in college while having conservative transphobic parents, having to boymode half the time, being American etc) I almost feel as though itâs not enough struggle to beat back the impostor syndrome
