Shout out to acclaimed horror mangaka Junji Ito for writing a cute slice of life comedy about competing with his wife for the affection of his two cats and REFUSING to change his eerie, body-horror-filled, vertigo-inducing art style at all for its entire duration
we stan a legend
im so over seeing posts where people are sad that american soldiers are killed at bases in other countries like wtf do u think we'd do if other countries tried to set up military bases in the us???? oh wait we dont have any bases from other countries bc we threaten to nuke anyone who even thinks about invading the us while we invade countless countries but somehow think that's ok???
cry that these people are dying for no goddamn reason in countries we're supposedly allied with and not allied with. cry bc our gov is never gonna close those bases even when they're blown up by the people WE'RE invading and then those people will somehow be the bad guys for not wanting to live under us imperialism
the land of the free does nothing but oppress others and eradicate anyone who dares to fight back
im sad those people are dead, i really am. but the people who share statuses begging people to pray 4 the troops are also the ones who demand we stay in this forever war and keep shipping out young people to die for reasons they have no stake in for a country that would let them die of an infected cut like it's the 10th century if they couldnt pay for the disinfectant. save your worthless tears. they want this war, so they need to deal with the death of young adults who had futures and goals they desire so badly while they cower in their locked cars in a rough neighborhood theyre passing through to get to whole foods.
they wanted war and got it and death of innocents is always the price of wars waged by the bourgeoisie

This kid is awesome
Cute how people who say this shit dont say transphobia doesnt exist just because shitty parents might kick out a trans kid because they think it’s because they’re gay. It’s all terrible and parents being bigoted and neglectful and abusive. To parents like that it doesn’t matter if you’re gay or trans or ace, it’s all the same to them and they don’t want you in their family.
Using this as a “gotcha” to belittle the experiences of those who’ve gotten kicked out after coming out with the bonus of not even being believed for what they came out as is disgusting.
If you’re someone who’s so wrapped up in your exclusionary ideology that you’re denying the experiences of fucking children kicked out of their homes and abused after coming out, for the love of whatever you believe/don’t believe in, fucking re-evaluate.
Also to everyone like “this fake, aces don’t get offered conversion therapy”
In this recent UK study cis asexuals were the most likely to have conversion therapy equal to cis gay/lesbian people. And the most likely to have it offered.
https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/721704/LGBT-survey-research-report.pdf
Stop basically yelling Fake News!1 and re-evaluate why you refuse to listen to victims of abuse.
Also people should stop reblogged this with “why would a parent kick a kid out for not having sex??.”
1) Stop equating sexuality to behavior. Don’t do it with gay people, don’t do it for ace people.
2) Faith based groups, especially those who are not pro-LGBTQ don’t magically see aces as acceptable. They view them as not-straight therefore wrong.
3) If you are abstinent it’s supposed to be a sacrifice you suffer through to show your strong faith. Sex is meant to be your reward for being married. Being abstinent in a faith based groups works until you are meant to get married, be fruitful, or summit to your husband. The moment you decide you don’t want any of that for yourself now or in the future it’s a seen as a problem.
4) You’ll note that lots of number 3 is sexism, sex negativity, and the forced continuation of nuclear families something that directly and indirectly adds to homophobia and transphobia. And instead of saying “hey this ace, this victim of abuse, gives us an opportunity to discuss all of those wrongs in society, plenty of people just reblog “but why would you kick a virgin out??”
Learn what asexuality is, and how our fight for liberation has benefits for everyone.
5) if you admit to not feeling attraction, a common reaction is that you’re unwell, unstable, maybe unable to love at all, are you violent???? because asexuality as a term in the public consciousness is so new, a lot of aphobia is also wrapped up in plain old ableism. very similar to the “you cant feel empathy and thus are an ~insane criminal~” stereotype that autistic people get.
remember that conversion therapy is ostensibly “nice.” it’s supposed to “help” you, to “fix” you. it doesn’t come from people who actually admit they just hate their target. thats why its so popular with ace kids, even if the parent doesnt care if they’re having sex or not, they’re angry and upset that the child admitted to feeling differently, and immediately classified them in the “dangerous mentally ill person” category.
“Oh, that discrimination doesn’t count because they THOUGHT you were a member of a different group” Fuck off. That’s not how it works.
things that made me stop wanting to die that require no effort whatsoever
change the color used to highlight text on your laptop
move the pictures on your wall
stack whatever clutter is in your room into piles even if you don’t have time to clean it all
slightly vary your commute, even just by one street
change where you sit and scroll aimlessly on your phone even if it’s only to the chair in your room instead of your bed
drink water or juice out of a wine glass in the morning because nothing is real
shower with the lights off, without music
buy $3 flowers at trader joe’s—they look bad next to the more expensive ones but they look so good in your room
start typing things you don’t post into your notes. your thoughts can be worth documenting even if you don’t deem them worth sharing
wake up super early just once. you don’t have to make it a habit it’s just extra satisfying to go to bed that night
listen to the entirety of your favorite album from 2015
Almost all of these are about variety. Humans need stimulation! We need enrichment! We literally cannot do the same thing every day!
The other day I was feeling miserable, so I hopped on a bus and rode it all the way back to where I’d started, and my brain, which had finally had some proper stimulation via new environments, was suddenly ready to go again!
This is why taking walks/drives and trying new hobbies are good for you! Don’t turn yourself into a sad zoo animal! You need some pumpkins to roll around in your enclosure!
ITS BACK!!!!!
god i fucking love the quote “dont turn yourself into a sad zoo animal” it has really inspired me!
I'm just curious, you've given some speculation on where you think the characters would be without the war and it seems you view Jake's future as pretty dismal. I'm curious why that is. To me, I think he'd be just pretty average but you portray him as a dropout who never does anything, I believe. I mean, I know he's not super motivated at 13 but that's 13 and he can be incredibly driven and move mountains when he wants something.
To be honest, a lot of what I find so appealing about Jake as a character is that he is so very ordinary. He says in the first couple pages of The Invasion that the two things he’s best at are basketball and video games—and yet he’s not good enough at basketball to make his school’s team, and not good enough at video games to beat Marco (who has considerably less experience). He’s a C average student as of #1 and an F average student as of #23. He mentions no specific ambitions outside of “be a decent person for a day” (#31) at any point during the war and seems to want to do nothing more than marry Cassie, have her kids, and retire young (#47). When Rachel asks him what he’d do if the war ended tomorrow, he has no answer for her (#22), and when Cassie asks him on the eve of the final battle about his plans in case they win, he can’t come up with anything outside of marrying her and going to basketball games (#53).
Jake is also a hardworking, dedicated, loyal, unbelievably brave individual who (as Marco says in #54) achieves the impossible through courage and determination more so than brilliance or skill. And the thing is that he doesn’t have much in the way of skills. He’s a “dumb jock” (#35) who admits to being bad at math and other academic pursuits (#4), fairly clueless at figuring out other people (#21), and too much of a klutz to be much of a jock (#6). When he finally moves out of his parents’ place after the war and gets a job, he seems apathetic toward it at best and literally willing to go on a suicide mission to get out of it at worst (#54).
Anyway, most of the reason that I adore that side of the character (and celebrate it in some of my AUs, you are correct) is that IMHO there are not nearly enough heroes like Jake in young adult science fiction. The huge majority of YA SF heroes are smart, talented, misunderstood, artistic, and usually otherwise special as well (Ender Wiggen, Katinss Everdeen, Tris Prior, Meg and Charles Wallace Murray, etc.) The huge majority of YA SF portrayals of “dumb” or otherwise untalented characters, especially dumb jocks, show those characters as villains (Vladimir Todd, Blue Bloods, I Am Number Four, My Teacher is an Alien, Valiant, etc.) Tobias is a classic YA SF hero (artistic, intelligent, misunderstood, descended from an ancient line of warriors); Jake is a genuinely unlikely hero according to the conventions of the genre. I like Tobias perfectly well, but I love Jake (even more than I love the other five cinnamon rolls on that team) largely because K.A. Applegate does a very convincing job of suggesting that Jake is heading nowhere fast with his life before an alien invasion lands in his lap and he rises spectacularly to the occasion.
#this is also why I feel like #Jake is a lot like Rachel #more then they think #in the series they talk a lot about #what will rachel be after the war? #they talk a lot less about jake
Jake is like me. He loves excitement and adventure and being a little crazy. Maybe we’re so alike because we’re cousins. – #2: The Visitor
everything about this post is a really good point. even if he had somehow gotten it in his craw that he should try the army, the skillset he demonstrated was very much styled towards guerilla warfare and not something that would’ve been necessarily obvious in the context of being a grunt in the u.s. military.
and this is total conjecture but i feel like the berensons would not have been very happy with their son being in the military regardless; they always struck me as having a strong american upper-middle-class family vibe, where they wanted both kids to go to college and get nice jobs and continue in their generalized white collar footsteps.

re: the Yeerk Empire infographics: I have a line where a Yeerk says about infographic “we ran regressions and they came out significant,” and I just had moment editing the chapter where I thought to myself, wait, does the Yeerk Empire use frequentist or Bayesian statistics, and that may just possibly have been the nerdiest thought I have ever had
Oh wow, that idea leads me to so many questions. How heavily would Yeerks be influenced by other species for this question? Like, is their statistical software just 100% copied from Andalite tech or the Arn or whoever? (Could this result in a slightly patchwork tradition - e.g. Yeerks use different stats for different circumstances, depending on what species they picked it up from?) Or are Yeerks developing their own statistical science and making up their own minds about techniques, based on what they’ve learned from other species? Are statistician Yeerks all living in statistician hosts?
My first instinct is that if I were going to present to the Council of Thirteen or a Visser, the outcome of Bayesian analysis is much easier to explain. “The probability of X is bla bla bla.” No need to define technical terms like confidence or p-values or significance.
I absolutely adore that you engaged with my question seriously. And you’re right, I wouldn’t want to have to explain p values to Visser Three.
Esplin 9466 actually came from the Yeerk science arm, or at least it looks like he did, so he might understand p values. That said, the idea of him screaming <I don’t want results, I WANT FIVE-SIGMA RESULTS!> now has me giggling like crazy.
@thejakeformerlyknownasprince
Ahh I love this fandom
oh my god oh my god oh my god
imagine: a yeerk scientist is getting their very first human host. they’re so excited. they even heard that there’s a voluntary controller from a local university -- they matched up so well, a stat professor and a yeerk scientist with a specialization in probabilities!
then, the infestation. they are poking around in the brain together, trying to get a sense of each other. a sense of dawning dread falls over the yeerk.
<You’ve got some brilliant work in here! Wow! What a... wait, I’m looking into your thesis right now. I... what’s this p-value nonsense? Where’s your prior distributions? How in the world are you accounting for uncertainty here? Oh no. Are you a... frequentist?>
