It’s epilepsy awareness month and I’m seeing people tagging stuff incorrectly so a reminder: the epilepsy tag is a tag for the epilepsy community to talk about having epilepsy. You are endangering people by tagging your videos and gifs that contain flashing lights with epilepsy. Also, anything with the word epilepsy in it appears in the tag search so please also avoid tags like epilepsy warning. Just tag with flashing lights.
I really can’t believe I’ve been on this hell site for 8 years
Impart me in your wisdom of ancient times
one time there was a tumblr user with the url “pizza” and she would just comment on any text post about pizza saying “omg that’s me” and then we found out she had an entire tag dedicated to saying the n word
One time somebody paid $750 for the url ‘hi’ and got deleted in less than a year for promoting weight loss scams
There’s always been something deeply wrong with this place.
too much to document, but god damn we can try
i'm so glad goncharov happened when it did, right before prolific public use of AI. that was pure honest gaslighting straight from the heart. real human whimsicality and trickery thru blood sweat and tears. we were a family. and we all gonched, together. you cant replicate that with any machine.
i love explaining the etymology of the word "rickroll" because the story starts with "ok, so at one point 4chan applied a filter to everyone's posts that changed the word egg to duck"
can you explain the “No, Mr Horse, don’t worry. I certainly don’t have a Plinko down here!” post? ive been trying to track down all the references but theres too many i cant find. thanks!!
it seems to be a crossover between the following:
the cask of amontillado
horse in the hospital
color theory
horse plinko
ngl sometimes the sentiment of "don't ever say anything that might suggest someone may be trans ever" on tumblr being as pervasive as it is feels less like a "i'm trying to be respectful of how you identify/not trying to pry into something you may not be comfortable with" thing and more adjacent to the "trans-as-social-contagion" line that transphobes have.
i didn't feel like i was able to id as anything but cis woman until one of my transfem nb lesbian friends took the time to ask me how i felt about my relationship to gender after watching me post quite a bit in the vent channels on a discord server we were both on. she told me that a lot of the feelings i was having about my relationship to gender and sexuality were things she had also felt before when figuring her own relationship to it out (albeit her journey was different because she also has to navigate transmisogyny), that i shouldn't be afraid to explore the possibility of being nonbinary and even just using "lesbian" as a means to describe my relationship to gender if that felt right, and that i wouldn't be stepping on anyone's toes in doing so.
and that conversation was like a sigh of relief to me after having held my breath for years and being afraid of putting an actual name to how i felt about myself. tbh, if she hadn't reached out, i'd probably still be here telling myself that i'm a cis woman despite how much the concept made me want to crawl out of my skin and made me feel like i was having to smother a part of myself in the process. and i do not think that this is a completely unique experience.
while there's always a line that can be crossed when it comes to just about any personal topic and ultimately that gender identity is journey of self-discovery, the idea that even mildly and compassionately suggesting that someone might benefit from exploring options with their gender identity during a heart-to-heart is somehow inherently disrespectful, or god forbid, predatory (especially when it comes to transfems) is something a lot of people need to unpack.
i have no idea how to find this particular one so i thought i'd come here, do you have the comic where its the crowd of main characters being pushed aside to reveal the side character sitting in the back behind them. do you know what im talking about its very important for my purposes. if you do not have it would you be able to point me in its direction. thank you for your time
unfortunately we‘re not familiar with this meme nor were we able to find it
if anyone else has an example or link to this meme let us know
everyone's talking about how "prev tags" is an integral part of how people use the site and now the update's ruined it and blah blah blah, but you can't fool me! I remember back when everyone was griping about how it's a degenerate innovation from twitter migrants and that real tumblr users write out the tags themselves
let it be known that i still hate it
The phrase "prev tags" itself is very new, but the concept of backwards-traversing a reblog chain is very old.
Working backwards up the reblog chain is an integral part of the site and it's insane they removed it.
Saying "prev tags" instead of just screenshotting them like a sensible person is only like a year old and it's sucked that entire time.
thanks @bmoharrisbankofficial but unfortunately i can’t focus on the very important message here because i’m too busy being confused by the fact that apparently if you send an ask with only one letter tumblr will bold that letter in the “asked you” notification text?? why the fuck would that be the case
fascinating
what the fuck is the backend of this site like
Hey do you have a link to some sort of master post to explain what words like blorbo and skrunkly mean? Been trying to find one but can't
you can find all the memes that were documented on this blog here
and if you google any meme you are trying to understand + know your meme you should be able to find most memes. (eg. "blorbo know your meme")
hope this helps
so i have a mildly popular “reblog and put in in the tags” post going around and its. very clear how many people don’t know how to interact with a tumblr post
so, first of all, tumblr’s culture has changed a lot in the past couple years. there’s a genuine community effort to not start any drama, and ironically a lot of the current hostility is an effort to keep things calm. there’s also a change in how people interact with posts, so if you haven’t been here in a while please skip down to the tags/replies/reblog with text section.
for newcomers: you should be reblogging posts about as liberally as you would like something on twitter. if you only like stuff, people will think you are rude/a bot. you’ve probably heard people talk about “cultivating your dash,” and thats because this platform is 100% centered around your dashboard. trending matters less, unfollowing and blocking in order to shape your dash into it’s best form is widely accepted, the majority of the content you’ll find and interact with will be because of your dash, and the only way to put things on your dash is to reblog them. tumblr users are deeply distrustful of algorithms and have largely turned off the “see posts your friends have liked” function (i recommend you also turn of the various algorithms in settings → general settings → dashboard preferences).
so, once you’ve reblogged a post, there’s three ways to add content to it. the tags, replies, and reblogging with text. all of them have different connotations
the tags: an inside voice. originally they were meant for organizing your blog (and they’re still used for this), but they’ve also morphed into a way to share thoughts that aren’t funny/insightful enough for non-followers to be interested in. when in doubt, put your comment in the tags
replies: basically talking to your friends in class. your followers have no way of finding your replies (they don’t pop up on the dash, nobody gets notified except for the original poster) so chances are, only the person who made the post is gonna see your comment. it’s for quick one-offs that you’re okay with other people overhearing, but really is only made for one person. they’re like a public dm
reblog with text: an outside voice. you’re getting up on a stage in town square and entertaining people. make sure it’s funny or insightful— bottom line, add something new to the conversation. you should use this the least
general rules of thumb:
when in doubt, reblog. people will judge you if your blog is only personal posts and you only interact with other content by liking it.
the only things people will judge you for reblogging are personal vent posts. leave a like to give a little virtual hug
if a post is asking about your personality/opinions (i.e: tell me what’s the last tv show you watched, that kind of thing) put it in the tags
also if you see a nice edit, gifset, or art, reblog and say something nice in the tags! it’s that nice sweet spot of common enough that no one will notice but uncommon enough to make the artist’s day
Finally real advice for new users. This is a solid guide for how to make the transition from Twitter to Tumblr.
In particular, artists need you to reblog. A reblog helps them get seen. A like doesn’t help them at all.
there's still a week left for the funniest possible thing to happen (charles dying before the coronation) like to charge reblog to cast or whatever
Would it be possible for Tumblr to share more financial information? I'm specifically curious about how much revenue is coming from users (Ad-Free Browsing, Blaze, Important Blue Internet Checkmarks, Dashboard Crabs, merchandise, et cetera) as compared to revenue from advertisements, and also how that stacks up against the costs of running Tumblr (servers, hosting, payroll, et cetera). I personally would feel better about financially supporting Tumblr if I had more information about where and how far the money goes, and I suspect I'm not the only person for whom that is true. I want Tumblr to keep existing as the weird and wonderful website it is, so encouraging more user support seems like a good thing.
I can't share specifics, but I can tell you that it costs many millions more to run Tumblr than we currently bring in via avenues that aren't advertising (advertising + non-ad revenue also doesn't close the gap, but advertising makes a significant amount more in revenue than all our non-ad revenue). You're going to see us experiment a lot this year with different non-ad revenue ideas, because we would like to get to a state where we are sustainable (obviously, that is our most imperative goal) but also where we can turn off programmatic advertising entirely (programmatic ads are the ones like from Amazon or "this one weird trick"; we want to expand our partnership relationships, which are things like our Stranger Things campaign last June, Manscaped, etc). Not everything we try will resonate, but we are going to try plenty of things, because we simply have to. We have a tricky balance right now that I find very interesting - make things our long-time users will find engaging, while also making sense to the next 5 million users who aren't yet on Tumblr. There are tons of different communities on Tumblr, and we want to be able to provide this space for all of them, and so future fans and folks exploring their identity and the world have a safe space to do so.
To answer your question as directly as I can, the money that users pay to us, and what we make from advertising, goes directly to the costs of Tumblr (including salaries and server costs, but not limited to that), but it costs Automattic a lot more than we bring in to cover the gap (again to the tune of 10s of millions). Automattic can't do that forever. We have decreased our costs by quite a bit, which helps, but the most significant gains will come directly from users. We have made big improvements in the last year, and if we can keep building on that, we have bright prospects. Blaze and Important Blue Internet Checkmark are doing the best, and we have high hopes for Live and merch, both of which we will keep tweaking.
I hope that helps!
Deinfluencing in general can be a huge force for good. It helps to ensure that bad faith products don't go unchallenged. This is an example of attempted deinfluencing, but this isn't based in fact, which is necessary for deinfluencing to be that force for good.
In this case, there are no EU laws against live streaming. But I assume the point here is around data collection. Here's the data we collect: Username, Age, IP location. If you consent, we share this with our partner, and you are able to use Live. If you don't consent, we don't share it, obviously, and you don't use Live.
We will be rolling Live out internationally, and we are currently in the process of getting a DPA (data processing agreement) with our partner to ensure we are 100% in compliance with laws in any regions we open Live up to. We take user data very seriously, and that is partly why we're not more financially successful. It's a conscious choice we've made, and it's financially penalized us, and we have no regrets.

wish i could paint this on the walls of the dashboard for more people to understand. (emphasis mine.)
