Luigi Mangione pleads guilty in the federal killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Sentencing is set for Dec. 18.

Mangione read a statement to the court: “After years of enduring severe pain from a broken back, navigating the obstacles of the health insurance system and witnessing similar experiences of countless others, I learned that United Healthcare would be holding its annual investor conference in New York City on December 4, 2024, although the specific location was not publicly disclosed. I then researched the event online. I observed that the annual conference of America’s largest health care organization with the stated mission to make health –excuse me – with the stated mission to make the health system work better for everyone, would be attended by company executives, the board of directors, and hundreds of investors, not doctors, nurses, and patients. In November of 2024, I traveled from outside of New York State to Manhattan. I then emailed United Healthcare leadership posing as an investor at a firm managing over $50 billion in assets and requesting information about the conference. Unlike my previous interactions with insurers, I received an immediate response within an hour. Before traveling to New York, I used a 3-D printer to make part of a gun, and I equipped the gun with the silencer and magazine. My travel to New York and email to United Healthcare was with the intent to shoot Brian Thompson. On the morning of December 4, 2024, I shot Mr. Thompson in Manhattan and he died. When I did so, I understood that my actions would place him in fear of death or serious bodily injury. I knew what I was doing was illegal.”

Always be hope-pilled. Things are fucking rough. Many of us have experienced horrors that are almost unspeakable. But still there is good in the world. Females from all walks of life organize, look after one another, and advocate for one another. We are beating men in educational attainment, birth rates are going down, more resources exist for domestic violence and rape. And there is pushback to all of this! But we need to push back harder and continue to support and look after one another rather than allow ourselves to fall into despair. I believe in us.

Women who you don't like, or you don't politically align with, or who are horrible people, still have the right to see their rapists and abusers face justice and to have their voices heard.

This is a putrid attitude to have, BTW. Rape isn't a punishment for being a shit person. It is a violent and fundamental violation of the right to control over one's body. Excusing, dismissing it, or justifying it, just once, just a little, is a road to total dehumanisation. The worst, most evil person in the world would still never deserve to have it happen to them.

Additional reminder that there are always going to be people who think YOU are a horrible person, sometimes by virtue of being a Democrat, or queer, or being pro-choice...

and if you subscribe to the "horrible people don't deserve to see their rapists face justice/do deserve to be raped" take, then there will be people out there who think those things about you.

That's the thing about human rights: every human deserves them. Every single one. You do not have to earn them by having the "correct" opinions or doing the "right" things. Every single human deserves them, no matter fucking what, simply because they are human.

Because the second you start dehumanizing people and then using that as justification for stripping away their rights, there WILL be someone who uses that same justification against you.
