Children of Earth: Day FOUR Reflections... #6

No. SIX of my more lengthy points, which got shortened for my full list of thoughts after watching Day FOUR of CoE...

"An injury to one is an injury to all…" Now, I'll admit straight up, what I'm about to talk about is probably not what's actually happening in the scene, but the thought crossed my mind and it was funny to me, so here it is anyway…

So, the “very old, very wise friend”, who taught Jack the philosophy he tells the 456, is the Doctor, right?… well, I like to think Ianto's sharp, rather biting comment about it not mattering is actually a bit of a reflection of Ianto not liking the Doctor very much. (I know it's not. It’s more likely just one last bit of bickering for them, so we can hear some Ianto snark before y’kno: DEATH. Or more plainly, it's Ianto criticising Jack for using metaphors against an frickin’ alien!) Either way, I wanna talk about this other concept instead… 

I love the idea of Ianto having this deep disdain for the Doctor. Everyone else loves the dude, but Ianto? Ianto just associates the Doctor with utter disaster… FIRST, the Doctor was there at the battle of Canary Wharf, where Ianto lost everything, including (eventually) Lisa, the woman he loved. SECOND, the Doctor was the reason Jack then disappeared for months on end after Abberdon, Ianto had just gone through watching Jack seemingly being permanently dead, to then be very publicly and passionately kissed by the man on his miraculous return to life... to then be completely gone again when Ianto returns with the coffee. THIRD, he was the reason Jack ditched Gwen and Ianto again during the Stolen Earth crisis to go help the Doctor aboard the TARDIS…! Basically, if the Doctor is around, then Ianto is probably about to lose something he cares about. Therefore, it is my belief that Ianto has zero shits to give for Jacks infatuation with his beloved Doctor.

On a slightly separate note, I wish this were an idea that was actually explored in the show somehow, because I think it's a brilliant concept. Not only would it have been quite funny to see, but it genuinely could have been endearing or even a compelling source of conflict for Jack and Ianto to deal with - and you know my thoughts on the lack of Janto conflict.

But that's just one of my thoughts (admittedly, the most random and ridiculous of the thoughts after watching DAY FOUR). And I lied above - I actually cut this from the original list since there wasn't a quick way of shortening it, but I saw no reason not to still post it here anyway.

Only two more points to go, then I will be done with all my reflections from DAY FOUR... and I'll have no excuse not to watch that final episode of CoE.

I wish Torchwood had had like, two more seasons of business as usual episodes before anyone died or became undead to do dumb tropey genre show shit.

I want a bodyswap episode - I want like, Ianto having to fumble his way through being Gwen in front of Rhys.

I want a full memory loss episode - I know we did memory manipulation with Adam, but I want everyone to wake up in the Hub not knowing who or where they are, and to have to deal with an alien threat when they don't actually know aliens exist.

although i spend day and night thinking about this show, i actually think it's best to dive into fanfic for the afterlife of the story than to keep on hoping the show comes back, because fan writers have the creative liberty the show writers will never be allowed to have in a million years.

"b-but sometimes the writing/ideas in fanfic are trash" so are in doctor who. look at how they shattered belinda's entire personality in the span of a season finale.

if you don't like a fanfic, you can always put it aside. simply don't read it. if they mess up in canon, though, it's there forever. try and ignore it if you will, but it's the undeniable trajectory of that particular reality and it will more likely be brought up again in audiodrama/books/comics. And let's be honest, retcon (the actual narrative device, not the drug in the show) is the defeated's relief. most times it ends up being more disrespectful than the plot point it tried to erase.

so yeah, read fanfic! if you keep thinking about an idea you wish they had done, put it on paper, write it down! doesn't matter if you're not the best writer, i think most people will agree that it's better to read a good story with not the best grammar than a beautifully written clichè.

Look, this is probably going to end up as an unpopular post, because God knows the level of brainrot capitalism and fast consumption caused in people's brains, but I'd rather not get TV shows for a while if it means writers get their rights defended and recognized.

Entertainment can't come at the cost of fair pay, healthy work environment and ethical practices.

i still get amazed at how people truly think capitalism breeds creativity and good art, though that's systematically impossible. It makes no sense AT ALL, it's pretty simple to see why:

The essential, most basic thing that defines capitalism in its very core is: profit. Any single person on the planet agrees that capitalism's most primal goal is to achieve profit.

So when you put a capitalist company in charge of creating art, it still strives for profit. You may think that means it strives for good art, because everyone universally likes good art, right? Well, unfortunately, that's not how it works.

Art is a very subjective field. What I mean is that there isn't a categorical formula for creating it. You can absolutely tell the difference between trash and a masterpiece, but you cannot know if it's good or bad art before creating it.

That represents a BIG risk, and one that companies are not willing to take. So what can you create that will never fail to peak people's interest? It's simple: ask them.

That's the ultimate reason why capitalism doesn't create good art, or any art at all: because it's more profitable to follow trends than to create them. This is why you haven't seen anything really new on TV since the 2010s, why there are only either franchises or remakes in theaters; it explains disney's live actions, the hundreds of sitcom reunions/revivals, celebrity cameos and much more.

whenever I take a train (whether that be a tube or long distance) I tend to sit on the floor if most seats are taken, I also sit down at the platforms if I have to wait for more than like 10 minutes

now I was wondering whether that is socially acceptable (in theory, not because I care) and since all of my friends are autistic and thus largely don't care about social rules I can't get straight answers
