the big man is the masculine dom and the dom is the top and the little man is effeminate and transgender but fully passes as a cis man and has top surgery but since he doesnt have bottom surgery he literally has to be a bottom theres no way for someone with a vagina to top and the bottom is the sub and they are both uncomplicatedly homosexual with zero positive emotions for women and they both have adhd and autism but only the kind of autism that doesnt actually disable you and they also crossdress but in a specifically humiliating way (why would a MAN wear a DRESS??? 🤪🤪 etc.) and they live together in a big house that they can both effortlessly afford and they're married and have 2 kids a dog and a cat (because Big man is dog coded and Little man is cat coded) and neither of them have jobs or lasting damage from canon events they've been through or physical disabilities or PTSD that I cant turn into Angsty Ship Content and the sun has a big smiley face and birds are just V shapes on the paper it doesnt have to be more complicated than that you dont have to flesh them out. you dont have to. and if you think about it wouldn't it just be soooo much effort to draw a whole bird?? youre just having fun its mean to ask you for detail. and my teacher lives at the school and the bus driver lives in the bus and everything is exactly the same :)

black sails john silver just an incredible incredible incredible character, like it's been eight years since i first watched the show and every time i pause to think about him for more than five seconds i'm still stunned. like he gave up his share. he gave up his share. he gave up the thing he said he wanted most in the world so that he could live an incredibly dangerous, painful, labor-intensive life as part of a crew where he mattered. trading freedom and security for love and risk, never meaning anything he says because he doesn't know himself even a little bit.

like these are extremely basic john silver reflections, but sometimes we need to go back to the basics because what the fuuuuuuck

A thought that refuses to leave my mind about the show (among others tbh) is how since the show is told entirely through Niall's perspective, we never really see anyone question the strange dynamics between him and Ruben as adults. Obviously, you have Lori saying she thinks he needs distance from Ruben when Niall is going to university but at that time Niall is still young and reliant on his mother's opinion. But Lori is also (from Niall's perspective) so wrapped up in her relationship with Maura that she encourages her son to lie for Ruben.

And Joanna questions his blind loyalty but that's meant to add to the story of Niall eventually not lying to the court about Ruben and lead into what we see happen with adult Niall.

With Alby, it makes sense he wouldn't question it beyond assuming that it's simple homophobia and Niall being too scared to be honest because he doesn't know the full story. And it's not surprising he wouldn't question the story about Niall losing his virginity because he was a young man in the late 80s when this type of thing wasn't really a talking point. And then later as an adult, he only knows of and sees Ruben through a distance and with only the filtered information that Niall provides.

Mona is so wrapped up in her own dynamics with Ruben and it's pretty clear she's rationalized and normalized so much of his behaviour that it doesn't even register to her. Plus she is the girl that took Niall's virginity while Ruben facilitated it. At her age then and the time period, she probably did just view it as doing Niall a favour.

Ava is particularly interesting to me in this regard. Because she is seen solely through Niall's perspective (like everyone else) and she sees Ruben attack Niall in the street in front of their house. And we don't really see how she would have rationalized it but it's entirely possible that she did. People can and will ignore/normalize/rationalize even the most unimaginable things even when they know better. As far as she's aware, Ruben is Niall's brother. And Ruben showed up later with flowers. We don't see the conversation they had because Niall is not present to see it. But I don't think it's a stretch that Ruben being as manipulative as he can be was able to talk her round. And really, I would question what Ava questioning Niall and Ruben's relationship would have added to the story beyond giving us the audience satisfaction. And the show's ending makes it clear that satisfaction was never the goal.

It's an interesting thing to consider in my opinion and I think it offers up a pretty interesting opportunity as viewers to fill those gaps in rather than the show doing it for us
