Waited a year for the Supergirl movie, and I have so many conflicted feelings about it...
First: I'm so glad to have finally seen it!
Loved that version of Kara, she's way different than her comic counterpart (which I had no issues with, it's nice to see variations of her personality).
Loved the intro, the CG, the road trip scenes, the set ups, costumes and aliens, made me feel nostalgic of Firefly, that was really nice imo.
Now unfortunately two things ruined a little bit of the overall fun for me.
Hated the writing and character design of Krem, and everything about the bandits. The changes in their storyline -the kidnapping of girls in order to turn them into brides- was probably what annoyed me the most. I can get over most of the changes, but this one nope. Can't. I remember coming out of the theater after Superman 2025 and gushing about Lex being an awesome antagonist (Nicholas Hoult did a fantastic job!) so I'm beyond annoyed Krem falls short on this aspect.
The second issues for me was Lobo. His presence didn't feel earned for even a second. I liked Jason Momoa's performance, the character was fine in and of itself, it just didn't fit Kara's and Ruthye's storylines imo. You could tell DC was only trying to sell fans on an upcoming standalone project.
But I'm still glad this movie exists, and although it has a great deal of issues, ones that could have been prevented easily, I can't help but feel disheartened by the bashing the movie has been facing from the same people who always shit on women-led stories.
I still enjoyed most of the movie, and I'll probs watch it again, although for me it doesn't come close to WOT's quality (the comic has such beautiful visuals, a subtle building of Ruthye's and Kara's relationship, doesn't gloss over their way of dealing with trauma and revenge, or even the incredible scenes with Kara at full power, drained of it, in grief, angry etc...)
This is ofc nothing more than personal preferences at this point. Go read the comic, watch the movie, support more stories with Kara Zor El in them because honestly this is the kind of character I hope we get to see more of💛
