The erasure of characters that don't strictly go by he/him/his pronouns needs to be studied. Open your mind for a moment, in the Project Hail Mary fandom, there are possibly upwards of 100 different men being shipped with Grace, while only a handful of women and not cis men. For the sake of the argument let's say the ratio of anybody that isn't a man to men being shipped or even SHOWN in fics is about 10 : 100. That is 10 times the amount of non-men even showing up in a fic. I understand that most fics are one shots, as a fanfic writer I know that all too well, but some of these fics they're on Erid and it's only Adrian who isn't strictly a dude, and that's if they're written to not go by he/him (I know Eridians only have one gender but Rocky in most fics is written to go by he/him pronouns). Of course heteronormative ships shouldn't always be the main focus, but this isn't just about shipping anymore, it's about representation of a large part of our planets population. Here is an even better question, why are we villainizing Eva Stratt for sending Grace? Do I agree with what she did? No. Do I think what she did was justified? A little bit. Imagine you're her and a trolley is going to crush the entire planets population and everyone that will ever come after, but if you flick the lever you will be dooming the lives of three people. Three people that you know very well and maybe even you love. She still flipped the lever. Was it right to send an unwilling soul? NO. But also was it selfish of Grace to basically doom his students and the rest of the planet to refuse? YES. Why are we choosing to actively villainize a woman and then babying a full grown adult man? Eva Stratt did a lot of wrong but she does not deserve to have people foaming at the mouth at the prospect of ripping her to shreds. I think it speaks to a larger issue that we as a society have in which cis men are held on a pedestal while everyone else has to grovel at their feet. Again, heterosexual relationships shouldn't be the norm but that shouldn't be an excuse to erase the existence of non-he/him people from what you make.

maybe simon did think grace was an angel. not in the white savior way that is kind of being pushed unintentionally (hopefully it's unintentional). but in the way that simon thinks that he must have died and this is a twisted version of hell. he thinks grace is an angel sent to torture and deceive him. simon does not partake in the food or water offered to him by grace. heaven has never been an option for simon. he doesn't talk and just stares at the wall until he passes out and they try to give him fluids and the nutrients he needs while he sleeps. simon wakes up and feels violated, the cycle continues on and on and on. simon does listen to what grace rambles about and learns about the other man. meanwhile grace doesn't even know simon's name. and slowly, simon realizes that maybe this isn't hell nor heaven. something in between. maybe grace isn't an angel or a demon but just a man. maybe he is trapped in space as he always was, but it's bearable if there are stars.

in a world where shapiro and dubois were sent, do you guys think that grace wakes up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat because he's imagining that none of the four survived the journey. Earth wouldn't ever know until at least 28 years have passed and someone gets a feeling that something went wrong. it doesn't matter if it did or not. grace still feels the guilt of sending those four up into space to die. maybe they would figure it out or not. grace watches the world freeze over and knows that it's his fault for not training them better or understanding astrophage enough or not volunteering

in a modern au universe where simon has escaped from a cult in modern america, where do we think this cult was located? because personally i'm feeling wisconsin-- WAIT NO I'M NOT picture this montana. montana has 7.4 people per square mile, there are trees there but not the kind of trees that simon yearns for, it's mostly cattle farming (which i'm getting from the most goated science teacher) so simon could grow an aversion to horses or cattle OR he found solace in the cattle and horses when shit got bad... he moved to san francisco to learn biomedical engineering then met grace there..... do you think that after simon woke up from being saved by grace, he thought that grace was a hallucination. then he thought that grace was going to kill him. then once it became evident that that would not happen, and grace showed him so much kindness he thought that grace wanted sex from him? simon doesn't want to have sex with dr grace. but he thinks he has to or everything will be ripped away and he thinks of all the people that had touched him unkindly and without his consent. and when he starts crying, grace notices, of course he does. grace gently places a hand on simon's shoulder for comfort and simon warbles out, i don't want to fuck you. grace just backs up slightly and takes his hand off of simon. but simon wants it there. he wants a gentle touch that doesn't lead to anything, he wants to be kissed without the other wanting more, he wants to be cuddled without ending up underneath grace. but i like it when you touch me. so grace puts his hand back and simon shudders against it. this time grace's other hand touches his cheek and wipes the tears away. grace makes a promise, that feels different than all the others, then we never will, we never have to have sex, simon. but simon knows deep down that everyone breaks their promises and grace is no different.

why is it that there are so many fics in which the bottom is trans? listen, trans people need more representation in everything but it's slightly strange when people are making the BOTTOM the one who's ftm (I'm specifically talking about in mlm relationships in media but it's probably also happening in wlw fandom spaces). why does ryland grace HAVE to be ftm in a fic where he is having penetrative sex with simon? it's just weird that those who are considered more "submissive" are made trans in fics. it's the same thing when people genderbend Bilbo Baggins into Bilba Baggins while keeping Thorin the same. it's just really fucking weird and icky in my personal opinion. it just all feels a little transphobic and sexist, why does a character have to be born female at birth for them to be submissive? really think about the answer to that question

hate yourself by TV Girl is such a good song and fits many characters. and we can all relate to the song on some level, even if we don't always hate ourselves and if you don't hate yourself right now, I guarantee there was a time when you did. even if it was just a little bit, and only for a little while, you have still hated yourself and who you are. it's part of being a human, and it helps us grow as people, but sometimes it really does nothing but bad for us. so when people think that ryland grace of the hail mary hates himself, I can't say they're entirely wrong, he has 100% hated who he is at some point in his life, I don't think it is an ongoing thing and not as intensely as others have in the past or present (myself included in the past section). hate yourself does not belong on a playlist for him. you know who fits the song better? simon. he's been in prison for however long for being a murderer who most likely hates the fact that he didn't do more to stop the destruction of filament station. BUTTTTT that's no reason to make grace the solution to that problem (it's definitely leaning in white savior territory). I think it's more of an ongoing problem on his psyche that will probably heal over many, many years, after many, many conversations. guys!!!! can we please stop making grace SIMON'S solution, he may have been the world's but simon doesn't need the saving that people think he does. he doesn't deserve to be alone to fend for himself but I think the Eridians do more lifting in the department of self-worth. I need to mention that he does still have a praise kink (don't we all a little as human beings?) just I think it heals his relationship with other humans rather than the relationship with himself if that makes sense
