can I say something.

I actually do not give an actual fuck about (most of) the perceived inaccuracies and adaptive flourishes of Nolan's Odyssey and I think that some of you need to understand that stories can be good even if they are changed to fit a different thematic structure. I simply do not care about perceived mischaracterizations of one of history's oldest blorbos: Idgaf that it didn't include the Nobody detail when Odysseus' connection to the gods is tenuous and his sponsor god/the personification of his guilt wears the face of an innocent murdered as a result of his violations. His defining character traits are established much differently, and in my opinion, serve the medium far better. I think that some of you need to stop the rehash and enjoy a piece of art that claims inspiration, not accuracy.

also the whinging about these kinds of adaptive details is kind of like christians getting upset about jesus christ superstar.

Here here! I saw one person (i don’t even remember which site I was on) who said it actually made more sense to cut it, as the way Nolan depicted the gods was more agnostic anyway. And that including that scene would have killed that ambiguity by blatantly saying “it’s Poseidon doing it.”

"why did they remove the nobody scene--" because nolan's odysseus is a totally different kind of character. because nolan's odyssey is not an epic adventure but the tragic, painful, agonizing journey of loss, pain and suffering that follows troy- a war that is not a triumphant victory but a tragedy of human cruelty and violence- and that's why the encounter with polyphemus shifts from a display of cleverness and trickery with our mortal human protagonist outmaneuvering this mighty mythical beast to instead focus on the horror of being its prey. and following that, the much less glorious and triumphant reality that in having to escape it, and survive, they had to harm this living, feeling, thinking creature, only adding more to the blood already spilled. and once again it is one of many, many examples of breaking the rules of hospitality and civilization, how that is at the core of all of this tragedy.

"why aren't the gods present--" because this version of the story is about the people, and the gods are present in the way they're present in reality and would have been present to these people: not as tangible and visible beings but as something that people use to explain the world. as metaphors. they cannot be directly communicated with or give you answers on the world because you do not have these answers and these characters do not have them.

like, it's seriously not that hard, you guys. these are conscious choices that serve the story and the vision. whether you like the vision or think it works or it's a good choice for the movie is something else entirely, that's worth discussing. and obviously i think they are, but you can make an argument to the contrary. but this doesn't make them inherently bad or wrong just for being different. that's all it is. it's different. it's not a choice made out of misunderstanding or ignorance, it's made to serve the version of this story that the movie wants to tell. you just need to engage with this movie on its own terms, and these are pretty well established terms it's not really trying to fool you about. like, the odyssey is ancient; it's been adapted before, it's will be adapted again, it's been retold and it's going to be retold in ways that are wildly different from the original sometimes. it's literally fine.

What's killing me about the discourse around Nolan's Odyssey as an adaptation of Homer's work is. That yes it's an adaptation but the movie's goal is not to-- Retell the most researched well documented most accurate version of Homer's Odyssey with all greek actors and all the right kind of- NO It's a movie against war first. It is a beautiful, meaningful movie about the horrors of war, about living in a crisis. This movie is about the world we are living in now, it's using this story told for millennia using it to show us that we are still in this. How can you not see that? how can you nitpick this movie on what it's NOT about? When it's such a powerful statement? When the world feels like it's falling apart in front of our eyes and this movie comes out, and it's about everything we're suffering through, about veterans about the people in Gaza about this ideal of Zeus's law and instead of seeing that it's being criticized for what?? Tom Holland??
