Beloved Whump Prompt #119
I see your "Character A dies in Character B's arms" and raise you "Character A dies holding Character B in their arms"
Whumpee who doesn’t even realise they’ve passed out before waking up. They were awake, dizzy, too hot, and then dreams start to creep in, and they’re not even aware that what they’re experiencing isn’t reality anymore. Until they wake up to a gentle voice. “Hush now. You’re alright.” Their hands are curled around warm wrists. Their skin slowly registering the soft bedsheets that weren’t there last time. That gentle voice… Caretaker. Where … what happened….
Whumpees whose powers/magic are so integral to them that that blocking the abilities is like blocking their breathing. The same power-dampening tech or anti-magic that weakens others will kill them within hours.
What happens if they are captured? Do they desperately explain that the standard protocol isn’t going to work, and promise to obey without it? Are they sedated? Restrained more tightly in other ways? More importantly, are they even believed?
And if the dampener is activated, how long does it take their captors to realize that the whumpee wasn’t lying?
Magic user Whumpee in a team full of people who know absolutely nothing about magic at all.
The first time they’re vulnerable enough to wear clothes that don’t cover all of their skin, they’re worried of how the team will react to the magic markings on their skin, but nobody seems particularly bothered.
In fact, they all think it’s super cool. All of them think magic is invaluable, after all, and can’t imagine why Whumpee would cover up the markings it causes.
They ask a few questions here and there (after all they’ve never heard of magic doing that before) and Whumpee gives vague answers that are enough to satiate their curiosity.
Some time after a strenuous mission, Whumpee panics about the markings spreading. The team assume Whumpee is insecure about how they look, so comfort them by saying how much they love the markings.
Whumpee starts to cover up less, however this leads to disaster when the team encounter a fellow spellcaster and Whumpee doesn’t have a cloak or anything to hand.
To the team’s surprise, the spellcaster is horrified because oh my god what the hell happened to Whumpee?? Are they ok??? How the hell are they alive????
That day, the team find out that magical markings aren’t, in fact, normal, and are clear cut signs of magic actively harming the user. Whumpee had been covering them up because they didn’t want anyone to think they were weak.
This entire time, Whumpee had been actively rotting because of their magic, and the signs had been right there for all of the team to see. And they didn’t know any better.
a magic whump thing I'm obsessed w lately: powers malfunctioning so whumpee can't turn them off.
everywhere they go, they trail magic. people around them babble their secrets and truths compulsively. lightbulbs burst or candles light themselves. a friend asks what perfume whumpee's wearing because the scent of greenery and ozone lingers in the air around them. they're holding themself back as much as they can, stopping the people around them from catching the brunt of it, but flowers grow under their feet and there's no keeping their powers a secret, not now.
they're exhausted—they aren't meant to function this way, with their magic a parasite eating away at their energy, a wild beast bucking inside their chest. even as their friends react with delight as beautiful things bloom in whumpee's wake, whumpee can feel something worse on the way with each new surge of magic that wells up from within them
Mini Whump Prompt 204
A possessed whumpee that is moving without preservation towards their life, becoming stronger than their muscles can handle, running longer than their legs can carry them, shifting and twitching erratically. Caretaker knows if they free whumpee from their possession, agony will await them.
incorrect quotes (Punching Bags)
extremely good trope: injured character sees their own blood on someone else who's otherwise unscathed and gives a concerned "are you hurt?" double points if they're so injured they're barely lucid
The Whumpee was locked somewhere by their own people, for their own good or for a good reason. Maybe they are in quarantine, or in isolation, or in the brig for a minor thing.
It was meant to be temporary, or for there to be people checking on them and taking care of them.
But then something happens. Whumpee's people are under attack, there is a natural disaster, some glitch put everyone in lockdown, or just anything bigger is happening and keeping everyone away from Whumpee. As a result, Whumpee is left alone, where they are locked up.
Maybe Whumpee was delirious or possessed or is amnesic, and now wakes up alone and confused, with no one answering. Maybe Whumpee knows that something is happening and fears the worst for their friends. Maybe they are unaware that the others have a good reason to be kept out, and so Whumpee thinks they have been abandoned or are being punished.
Maybe it lasts more than a few hours and Whumpee has to find water or starts feeling hungry. Or feels too hot or too cold if there is something up with the place they are locked in. Maybe it's pitch dark or way too bright. Too silent, or maybe there is an alarm ringing nonstop. Maybe the Whumpee was hurt and needs more medical attention, or their painkillers. Maybe Whumpee is starting to go stir crazy.

Tips for Writing Comas!
Your character has been in a coma for three weeks and just woke up, said something profound, recognised everyone in the room, and will be walking by next chapter. i love you. i respect your commitment to the plot. but i need you to sit down because we have to talk about what the human body actually does when it's been unconscious for three weeks.
⊹ Waking from a coma is not waking up. it is a gradual, nonlinear process that can take days or weeks. there's no moment where the eyes open and the person is back. there are stages: responses to pain, then to voice, then to commands, then inconsistent awareness, then windows of consciousness that come and go. Your character might recognise someone they love and then have no memory of it an hour later. the people waiting at the bedside have to live in that uncertainty for a very long time.
⊹ Muscle atrophy is immediate and significant. after one week of immobility, you lose a measurable percentage of muscle mass. after three weeks? your character cannot sit up unaided. they cannot stand. their legs do not work the way they used to and getting them to work again involves weeks of painful physiotherapy. They will not be walking to the window to look meaningfully at the sky. They will be trying to hold a cup without dropping it.
⊹ Cognitive effects are real and unpredictable. memory gaps. difficulty concentrating. words disappearing mid-sentence. personality changes that might be temporary or might not be. your character waking up is the beginning of finding out who they are now, which parts came back intact and which parts are different in ways that can't be fixed by time or willpower. The person who walked in is not quite the same person who wakes up.
⊹ The psychological experience of the people who were waiting is also almost never written properly. you visited someone unconscious every day for three weeks and talked to them and held their hand and made decisions about their care and lived in a sustained state of grief and hope at the same time. and then they wake up. and you're supposed to be relieved. and you are relieved. but you're also exhausted in a way nobody is acknowledging, and slightly angry in a way you can't justify, and you've changed too while they were gone. the reunion is complicated. Write the complicated.
⊹ What the coma patient experiences, if anything, is genuinely unknown. some people report nothing. some report vivid dream-like states they can't distinguish from memory. some report hearing voices around them, including things said at the bedside that were never meant for them. Your character might have three weeks of false memories they believe are real. They might have heard something they weren't supposed to hear. they woke up knowing something about the people in that room that those people don't know they know.

When a character is revealed to be nonhuman, or a villain/living weapon while wounded, and the discovering character seems like they're about to point out the obvious in a horrified tone, only to go
"They're.... hurt."
Like yassss characters not caring at all about their friend's true identity. They only care that someone is need of help
Whumpee who loved books so much, their family buried them with the one they were reading when the car crash killed them.
Whumpee who, after being raised by the dead by Whumper, brings their book with them again, and is devastated to realize they don't remember how to read.
#329
content: came back wrong, necromancy, grief, emotional whump
Whumpee was confused.
They didn't remember how they'd gotten into a coffin, why they had been buried, I mean, I'm feeling fine, why would anyone think I was dead?
There was a book in their hands as magic lifted them out of their final resting place, gently setting them on top of the freshly dug soil. There was a stranger there, Whumpee assumed the source of the magic. They looked harsh and strict, and Whumpee could only imagine what a person doing magic in the middle of the night in a cemetery would be like.

content: nonhuman whumper, mer whumper, lady whumper, monster whumper, drowning, noncon kissing (sort of lol), biting, chewing, gnawing, whumpee with a death wish because why would you ever go cave diving, nitrogen narcosis and stuff, i don't know man
Whumpee loved cave diving. They loved the challenging caves, the ones with death tolls, and they went into every single dive with the knowledge that they could meet Lady Death down there.
They were expecting that. What they weren't expecting was to hear some sort of eerily beautiful sound after a successful expedition.
Mermaid whumpee rescued from a fishing ship by pirates for mermay?
#330
content: nonhuman whumpee, mer whumpee, dehumanisation, lady whumper, emeto, drowning, rescue, implied death, implied murder, restraints
"Ay, Captain," Caretaker called, eyes wide and something akin to panic rising in their chest. They had no fear in their heart when they cut down the crew on the fishing ship, but now, staring at the strange creature bound and left in a big barrel of water, they felt uneasy. "Captain!"
"Coming," came the gruff voice of Captain, but when she arrived and took in the sight before her, she also stopped dead in her tracks. "What's that?" she asked, furrowing her brows. "That's no man."
"I thought it was, before I saw the… fins."
