respect your decision to grow. never go back to people, habits, and situations that made you miserable.
you won't find happiness where you lost it
Questions I wish I could ask without Allistics thinking I'm being randomly rude, a growing list:
What are you talking about? - 'Too blunt, rude.'
Do I know you? - 'Forgetful, rude.'
Who are you and where do I know you from? - 'Really forgetful, rude.'
What's your name again? - 'Even MORE forgetful, rude.'
Am I boring you? - 'Passive Aggressive, rude.'
How do you want me to react to this? - 'Apathetic, rude.'
What do you want from me? - 'Defensive, rude.'
How long is this going to take? - 'Impatient, rude.'
Are you trying to change the subject? - 'Passive Aggressive, rude.'
When can I leave? - 'Dismissive, rude.'
Why am I here? - 'Antisocial, rude.'
What is the point of this? - 'Arrogant, rude.'
Is this absolutely necessary? - 'Lazy, rude.'
What does that even mean? - 'Too blunt again, rude.'
Why would you do that? - 'Criticizing, rude.'
Are you talking to me? - 'Aggressive, rude.'
Are you trying to start a conversation? - 'Unfriendly, rude.'
Like no fr what are you talking about I'M BEING DEADASS
And they say Autistics are ones that are bad at communication 😐
my Sibling in Christ y'all are the ones that refuse to answer very simple and very clear questions and almost every time without fail I just go
'That's not at all what I just asked you, but okay. Alright. It's fine.'
You ask them 'What are you talking about?' and they act like you've questioned their whole intellect and IQ score 😭😭
Like no sis I just genuinely have no idea what the fuck you're trying to say and honestly you're making very little sense
What, Do I look like Professor X to you??? Want me to read your mind?? What's happening????? What do you mean??!!!!
I think it needs to become common knowledge that "inability to read social cues" can show up as overcompensating.
You don't know how much misbehaviour is allowed, so you become the perfect child who never tests rules.
You don't know if someone is irritated with you, so you'll be extra generous and self-effacing.
You don't know how much is expected of you at work so you'll kill yourself in a minimum-wage job and not notice that nobody else is working like this.
"Hardworking and quiet" should be as much of an autism red flag as "ignores rules and doesn't know when to stop talking". Or why don't we just start using words to communicate so i can stop tracking everybody's eyebrow twitches, that would be great.
Sometimes (though not nearly as often) you get subtypes of this where overcompensating even grows into a special interest. I'm looking at you, autistic actors, psychologists, etiquette experts, interculturalists, anthropologists, sociologists, hospitality gurus, fiction writers, philosophers... All you bemused scholars of humanity.
"Ah, this doesn't apply to me... after years of intense study, I can reliably read most social cues!"
When you spend all day in a performance where you are so incredibly Normal and Socially Skilled and then collapse into a nonverbal puddle as soon as you get home, that's an autism.
...
Also. "Not picking up on social cues" is a frame of the situation which looks in from the outside, where "social cues" are a mundane, obvious facet of reality.
As an internal experience, it feels more like: "Most other human beings are weird and unpredictable, especially in groups. They seem to have shared sets of secret rules and nearly imperceptible ways of communicating which lead to erratic, disturbing behavior."
In addition: if you notice that your ability to parse and respond to social cues suddenly goes to absolute shit when you are tired or distracted... you might be looking at hypervigilant social compensation. like a swan gliding through a pond full of sailboats. sure, you might actually be more maneuverable and faster than the sailboats in some circumstances, but boy howdy are those little feets paddling underneath the surface..
....oh.
So much this.
Autism and masking are so funny because like internally I despise when plans change or food feels funny in my mouth or there's a tag in my shirt or I talk to too many people in one day or I have to make a phone call, etc so I always feel like a nervous wreck at any point in the day, but on the outside I'm just 😎😊😃 just vibing and I seem so chill and adaptable and emotionally put together, so it's hard to differentiate like am I GENUINELY okay with this or am I masking
Please stop infantlizing autistic people
Stop being weirded out when we cuss. Stop being weirded out when we talk about nsfw topics. Stop being weirded out when we are semiverbal or nonverbal.
We can smoke too, we can drink, vape, and cuss and do anything normal people can do. We can have (concented) sexual relationships. We can kiss people. We can have kinks. We can like BDSM or have fetishes. We are not innocent little kids.
Just because we have a disability doesn't mean we aren't people.
Just because we sometimes need to live with someone else doesn't mean we aren't people.
Just because we don't pick up on social clues doesn't mean we aren't people.
STOP INFANTILIZING US. STOP CALLING US INNOCENT. STOP THINKING YOU NEED TO PROTECT US. WE ARE REGULAR PEOPLE TOO.
like man doesn’t it fucking suck that there’s not really any public space. that you can’t go anywhere without spending money on food or transportation, that unless you wanna sit on a mall bench all day or browse library shelves you basically can’t do anything in public? even standing in front of a building without paying for something (“loitering”) is illegal. everything is built to punish homeless people which means if you ever want to sit down or rest or exist in public every building and park bench and windowsill is telling you to kill yourself instead. maybe that has something to do with the unpleasantness of online spaces, where everyone is shoved together into a giant digital chamber because it’s the only “public square” still available while also being isolated and alone in their room on their phone because everything sucks and a global pandemic is still happening. like I’m just saying I think that has more to do with how annoying people are on the internet than like mcu fanfiction
merry christmas to everyone who didn’t get presents today because their family couldn’t afford it and merry christmas to everyone who couldn’t make it home for the holidays and merry christmas to everyone spending it alone i want you all to know that i hope you all have a great great end of the year and i love you all and even if your holidays weren’t how you pictured them i hope you still have a good rest of the holidays and year
Things could get worse. Things could get better.
It could all go wrong. It could all go right.
I might make a mistake. I might learn a valuable lesson.
They might all hate me. They might all love me.
What if I never get better? I am going to get better.
it’s ok if your relationship with sexuality or gender or whatever is influenced by your mental illness, your disorder, your disability, your trauma, or anything else. whether it’s having a complicated relationship with sexuality because you have bpd, or identifying as asexual because of chronic fatigue and you don’t have the energy to engage in sex, or being agender because you’re autistic and don’t understand gender roles, or whatever the hell else. it doesn’t make you any less valid, and it doesn’t make your identity fake. your identity is as real and valid as anyone else’s.
that comment about how you should not borrow grief from the future has saved me multiple times from spiraling into an inescapable state of anxiety. like every time i find myself thinking about how something in the future could go wrong i remember that comment and i think to myself: well i never know, it might get better. it might not even happen the way i think it will and if it does happen and it is sad and bad ill be sad about it then, when it happens. and it’s somehow soo freeing
for whoever isn’t familiar with the comment they’re referring to 🤍
@thoughtstherapy
I do not see posts like this very often. Take note.
i hope it hurts a little less. day by day. week by week. i hope the ache in your chest eases. maybe it won't entirely, maybe it will. may the thought of feeling joy again alone be enough to keep you going, even if for a while.
your mistake is thinking healing will always feel good, and not often like molting while clung to dead tree bark
