Yaupon Holly (Ilex Cassina) - dry, roast, and drink like tea for a major source caffeine, theobromine, antioxidants.
The Yaupon Holly (leaf) is a North American super leaf that has been consumed for centuries, long before the European arrival in the New World, due its beneficial chemical compounds. For many tribes, particularly in the southeast, the trees had sacred value.
Yaupon: The Beloved Tree
America is the native home of many wondrous edible and medicinal plants. Tomatoes, potatoes, corn (maize), pumpkins, peanuts, chili peppers, chocolate (cacao), vanilla and blueberries had never graced the European palate prior to 1492*, and the healing wonders of arnica, goldenseal, and american ginseng were unknown to western society.
Among all these wonderful native plants, Yaupon held an exalted place among the indigenous people who lived with and understood the plants. Like many of the natural wonders around them, Yaupon was held in high regard. We all know of the Grand Canyon, The Great Lakes, Grand Forks, Grand Rapids. Indigenous people called Yaupon Holly: “Big Medicine”, “The Purifier” and “The Beloved Tree”.
In past days, Yaupon was sought after by tribes outside of its natural range. It was traded to far away tribes, lovingly and carefully transported to their villages. It was even traded to the Mayans in exchange for cacao.
We can’t forget about the natural wonders like the canyons and lakes we all marvel at. So, how did we forget about this magical, healing plant right under our feet? For me, the reasons are a different discussion. Yaupon is here with us now. It is traditional medicine with its own story to discover. Yaupon is revealing its magic to modern society at last after being forgotten for so long. Yaupon knows its time is now. Maybe it knows we need her now more than ever.

Have you ever experienced that euphoric, feel-good sensation when you enjoy a piece of chocolate?
That’s from theobromine!
Theobromine makes our teas a powerful tool for endurance athletes. It’s relaxing properties go to work on the nerves in your veins causing them to relax and expand, allowing for increased blood flow. Combined with the stimulating effects of the caffeine, Yaupon tea creates long term, sustained energy that can easily pass throughout the body.
So next time you’re heading out for a long run, hike, or bike ride grab some ASI Yaupon Tea and see how much farther you can go!

Crazy for Coffee ?
We get it. There’s very few aromas that trigger a sense of pleasure like the smell of fresh brewed coffee in the morning. And then, of course, your first sip...pure bliss, right? At least, that is, until your heart starts racing, your limbs start jittering and you are overcome with a wave of hyperactivity and mild anxiety. This is the effect of Caffeine when it’s left to it’s own devices.
When Caffeine is tempered by the presence of Theobromine, like in Yaupon Tea, here’s what happens:
Stimulation and Focus without the jitters
Same mental alertness without draining your physical system
No “crash”: the effect is steady and long-lasting, without highs and lows
ASI Yaupon Teas come in many different flavors to suit a variety of different palates. Experience being alert without the jitters and get back to tackling your daily tasks without worrying when your energy may crash.
A 2009 Texas A&M study found that Yaupon Holly can offer 50-100% of the antioxidant benefits of green tea,
Antioxidants are your body’s way of providing cells with a defense against exposure to everyday toxins that cause the production of free radicals.
Free radicals can damage your DNA by disrupting DNA duplication and maintenance and have been linked to such illnesses as Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, arthritis and diabetes.
We believe that Yaupon is here to teach us something,
and we want to share that lesson as best we can.
HEALTH: Yaupon has grown here on this continent long before any humans were living here. Native tribes here drank it medicinally and socially, finding its natural caffeine to serve as a reliable source of stamina and focus.
SUSTAINABILITY: We are picking this Yaupon right here in the South. We harvest in such a way that does not harm/kill the plant, in fact it often stimulates more growth, thereby making it a truly sustainable resource.
LOCAL: No ocean-crossing involved! By drinking Asi Yaupon Tea instead of Chinese Green Tea or Brazillian Yerba Mate, we are reducing the American Tea carbon footprint because this grows right in our backyard.
Ecological sensibility is a core concept of who we are at Asi Tea. Truly, we see our tea products as a means, not the ends.
Brew-at-Home Yaupon Herbal Blends Coming Soon!!
This Summer Asi Tea will have 4 new organic blends coming out in tea bags in addition to the traditional Yaupon Tea, but we don’t want to reveal all of them too soon...
Here’s a sneak preview of the early recipe experiments of the blend we are dubbing “Flower Power” so YUM!
We are excited to announce that our Native Grape Muscadine Iced Tea was named a Finalist in the Flavor of Georgia contest this year!!
“Ahh, I see...It’s pronounced ah-si: Asi Tea”
The Native peoples who lived in the southeastern region of North America referred to the Yaupon Holly as “Asi” which meant “The Purifier.”
When you really get to know the plant and its effects as a tea, you might start to think the Natives were actually anticipating us English-speakers saying “Ahh…I see, Ah see” as we came to realize Yaupon’s potential.
