The problem with studying the deep ocean is that humans need light to look at things, the depths of the ocean are extremely dark, and what lives there is accustomed to spending most of its time in that darkness. So when we go down there with submersibles and turn on Big Lights to see, we invariably and dramatically alter what's going on, in the same way that it's generally difficult to observe the natural behaviors of terrestrial animals if you whip out a megaphone and shout HEY GUYS WHAT ARE YOU DOING at them first.
A humble snubnose eelpout on its way to the whale fall buffet when some nearby humans give it a quick, unintrusive study:
I put this in the comments but feel it needs a reblog- Check out some of Dr Edith Widderās work on light in the deep sea! Among other things, she used the bioluminescence of stoplight fish to deduce wavelengths which most deep sea animals canāt perceive and used that to create light filters to be able to film with minimal disturbance! And thatās how we got 25 minutes of giant squid footage!!!!
Contrary to popular belief the biggest beginner's roadblock to art isn't even technical skill it's frustration tolerance, especially in the age of social media. It hurts and the frustration is endless but you must build the frustration tolerance equivalent to a roach's capacity to survive a nuclear explosion. That's how you build on the technical skill. Throw that "won't even start because I'm afraid it won't be perfect" shit out the window. Just do it. Just start. Good luck.
I don;t actually think theres been a true tumblr sexyman this decade. its an archetype that has largely died out
rewatching Avatar is so weird because Sokka is literally the only thing keeping them alive and fed. He constantly is like,
'guys we're out of supplies/ we need to stop/ we're attracting too much attention with the flying bison we should walk' etc.
Like in the “The Storm' when they're completely out of money and supplies the one to get a job in hopes of making money (he never actually gets paid, the world hates him) is Sokka.
In 'The Waterbending Scroll,' it's Sokka who's concerned about their lack of supplies when Aang sends them in a wave down the river, and is making sure they're careful with their spendibg when in town shopping.
He's also seen to catch fish and gather nuts (I know more often than not he fails to catch things on screen but it's implied he's the one that does most of the hunting and gathering)
It's like- Aang totally would have starved to death or gotten completely off track with often they're completely out of food and money
also when they save people who are all like 'how can we ever repay you?' Sokka is one who says 'with food and money'
What do I need to do when people respond to arguments of "you, as an adult, should be capable of making this specific choice for yourself, and can be expected to take responsibility of the consequences" with shit like "but what about my sister's kids, if we let my toddler nieces loose in these circumstances unsupervised, they would get seriously hurt". Like I get that some of you were taught to just skip the words you don't understand and assume that they aren't important to understanding the whole sentence, but how do you not know what the word "adult" means??
When I was small, about six or seven, I was balancing on a curb while waiting with my mother. I don't remember what we were waiting for. There was a toddler nearby, their parent otherwise occupied but within earshot. While I was doing my balance beam thing, my mother noticed I had the toddlar's rapt attention and said to me "Careful, you have an audience."
I noticed the toddlar, knew toddlars tend to copy others without understanding and don't have great balance, and promptly sat my butt on the curb as I realized I was Setting A Bad Example, and did not know I was doing it cause I didn't realize A Kid Was Watching.
If you are outside your home? Assume a toddlar somewhere can see you, and consider what they'd learn and then attempt from the watching. Would it be dangerous to them? You cannot assume supervision, toddlars people watch out windows all the time, and if you choose to act in a way that they copy dangerously? You just Made Labor for that kid and their entire family group to Unteach that before its an ER visit, and Kids Don't Roll With Un-Teaching. The harder a parent demands the kid stops without explaining why, the harder the kid will cling to that behavior or a permutation of it whenever they feel trapped, spiteful, or upset.
If you don't consider that there may always be a set of extremely young eyes on you, you will make life harder for all of your peers who have to deal with that kid. Consider them if and when you find yourself upset and feeling entitled to a public behavior when giving it up does you no harm, and may do others incredible good.
Part of Being The Change you want in the world is living it, even when no one is watching.
That is a beautiful sentiment. What does it have to do with anything in this poist?
i think maybe ur choices n actions have consequences n therefore u need to make good choices bc if u are being watched by a kid who dont know what good choices are they will copy u
Damn OP itās your post happening in real time

Itās finally happened.
After almost a decade on this site, I found another Tumblr user in the wild. I stopped to tie my shoe with rainbow laces this morning outside the silversmith at Colonial Williamsburg, and I heard it.
āI like your shoelaces.ā
Oh. Oh no.
I responded the only way I could. āThanks.ā And then I reluctantly added, āI stole them from the presidentā¦and if that makes sense to you, Iām very sorry.ā
The poor man, in full Colonial dress, stared at me for a long moment. And then burst into laughter. And said, āI havenāt thought about that in YEARS and this has never happened to me before.ā
Yeah. Me neither. Not until today.
Tumblr rite of passage. Achievement unlocked.
@victoriansecret I found your friend!!!
it says so right there in my bio textbook i would never lie to youĀ
perfect (bisexual)
every day it just concerns me how little compassion people have. no compassion for those living in the global south. no compassion for immigrants. no compassion for disabled ppl. no compassion for addicts. no compassion for prisoners. no compassion for children. like holy shit ...
i made a separate post about this but actually there are plenty of people cough white people who care about animals more than they ever do human people . not what i'm talking about make your own post
Endlessly diabolical how you can't say words like rape and suicide uncensored without either being criticised by idiots or punished by conglomerates.
It's not r*pe, it's rape. It's not su*cide, it's suicide. Not unalive, dead. The backbone needs to be reintroduced en masse because softening the blow of these concepts with advertising language does absolutely nothing but allow people unaffected by them to feel not even a sting of what they can do, prompting inaction.
And it's been proven that on certain websites, you don't even face a repercussion for using the words as they are. People just started censoring themselves because they feared the potential lack of views and likes and followers which is so nasty itself.
I attended an anti-suicide seminar in college. One of the big takeaways from it was that stigmatizing suicide increases the rate of suicide, because people who are feeling suicidal feel like they can't ask for help. Every time I see babytalk garbage like 'unalive', I think of that.
Use the real words. Words have power, and they matter.
theo van gogh was the one who suggested that his older brother vincent start seriously painting. as soon as theo was gainfully employed he gave vincent around 15% of his own yearly salary for art supplies, lodging, and food. about 2/3rds of vincent's surviving letters were to theo (including vincent's earliest and last letters), all of which were found stored in theo's desk. theo's child, vincent willem, was born on january 31st, 1890, and vincent was so delighted by his nephew that he painted almond blossoms for him. vincent shot himself half a year later on july 29th, 1890. theo's distress at his brother's death worsened his syphilis symptoms and he died half a year after his brother on january 25th, 1891 (four days before vincent willem's first birthday). theo was reburied next to vincent in auvers-sur-oise at the request of theo's wife johanna.
Almond Blossoms, 1890, Vincent van Gogh
Story time:
In middle school biology, we did an experiment. We were given yams, which we would sprout in cups of water. We then had to make hypotheses about how the yams would grow, based on descriptions of yam plants in our books, and make notes of our observations as they grew.
Hereās what was supposed to happen: we were supposed to see that the actual growth of the plant did not resemble our hypotheses. We were then supposed to figure out that these were, in fact, sweet potatoes.
What actually happened was that every single student in every single class lied in their notes so that their observations perfectly matched their hypotheses. See, everyone assumed the mismatch meant they had done something wrong in the process of growing the plant or that they had misunderstood the dichotomous key or the plant identification terminology. And, thanks to the wonders of a public school education, everyone assumed the wrong results would get us a failing grade. We were trying to pass. We didnāt want to get bitched out by the teacher. Curiosity, learning, science - that had nothing to do with why we were sitting in that classroom. So we all lied.
The teacher was furious. She tried to fail every student, but the administration stepped in and told her she wasnāt allowed to because a 100% fail rate is recognized as a failure of the teacher, not the class. It wasnāt even her fault, really, though her being a notorious hard-ass didnāt help. It was a failure of the entire educational system.
So whenever I see crap like Elizabeth Holmesās blood test scam or pharmaceutical trials which are unable to be replicated or industry-funded research that reaches wildly unscientific conclusions, I just remember those fucking sweet potatoes. I remember that curiosity dies when people are just trying to give their superiors the ārightā answers, so they can get the grade, get the job, get the paycheck. Itās not about truth when itās about paying rent. Thereās no scientific integrity if you canāt control for human desperation.
honestly I'm very grateful that I got involved in queer community organizing basically as soon as I turned 18, because that's how I was exposed to other queer people saying things like "I just wouldn't trust a bisexual" and "I don't believe in that privilege stuff" and "I don't like when people act like you have to be a feminist if you're gay," all of which taught me at a very young age the crucial truth that queer people can be very stupid and very wrong
I think there's a pervasive tendency among very young baby queers to get kind of dazzled by being among other gay people for the first time and that combined with the heady drug of the first taste of independence can really make you start thinking of The Queer Community(TM) like it's one big enlightened rainbow utopia but unfortunately we have dipshits and malevolent freaks like every other demographic. Peter Thiel is in here.
my condolences to the people learning that Peter Thiel is gay from this post
I think Australia actually had the best answer to the question "what do we do with phone booths?"
In Australia anybody can make free calls from any phone booth, also most phone booths also provide wi-fi.
So many people benefit, in so many situations.
The free phone booths have been so popular and important that new(fancy) phone booths are being installed.
Making phone booths a free public utility š
Ripping them out in the assumption that everyone has access to a phone or internet š
There has been a sharp increase in calls to helplines and emergency services using the free calls service provided through public payphones
