What's the tag to get reblogged? ✍️
🍁 The tag is #flufftober2026
Make sure there is NO SPACE between flufftober and 2026! We will NOT be checking other variations of this tag!
🍁 It's also good to mention us: @flufftober

🍁 Please make sure that all info is easy to find, either in the post or the tags. It takes a lot of time and energy to research every other post. So, please make sure to at least include the following very clearly:
💜 the day/alt/challenge prompt
💜 the fandom(s) (add "original work" or similar if applicable)
💜 the characters and/or ship(s) (add "oc" or similar if applicable)
What about the ao3 collection? 📝
🍁 The collection's name is Flufftober 2026 (either as flufftober2026 or as flufftober_2026)

One hot and cool writing tip that I wish more people knew is... you don't have to write out people's accents phonetically. You just don't. You are not Dickens. You are (hopefully) not Rowling. There are so many other ways you can make someone's speech feel authentic to their background, or just make it clear that they're speaking in a certain accent, not limited to:
literally just saying 'he spoke with a Welsh accent'; sure, it's a bit blunt, but it gets the job done in a pinch. "He's completely drunk," he said, his southern drawl lingering on the final syllable as if to highlight the extent of the offence. Y'know, something of that ilk, but not as shit.
learning the specific vocabulary and syntax that someone with that accent might use. Sticking with the Welsh theme, because it's objectively the best accent*, there's a bunch of things that differentiate a colloquial South Walean accent, outside of our famed tendency to elongate a vowel to the point of death. The way we use prepositions (where to by is he?), the vocabulary borrowed from Welsh - saying that someone daft is twp, or something small is dwty - can easily signpost our speech as being from that specific area, without needing to type something like "'e's absolutely 'angin', man, pissed as a faaht 'e is!" Something less jarring, such as "He's absolutely hanging, he is." is just as clear. A character who says "Do you want a cuppa?" is coded or located very differently to one who says "You'll have a cup of tea, so you will."
ditto if there are specific ways that someone from a certain area might refer to a well-known concept. Regional words for mother and father, for example, or words that are class-specific; your character who calls his parents 'mater and pater' is likely inhabiting a different socioeconomic strata than your character who calls them 'mam and dad'. See if there's a colloquial way of saying 'yes' and 'no'; a lot can be signposted if your character says 'nah' rather than 'no', or 'aye' rather than 'yes'. A character saying 'couch' is inherently coded differently to one who says 'sofa'.
The reasons that writing accents phonetically is Generally Ill-Advised, In My Opinion are as follows:
quite simply, you're probably not being as clear in conveying the sounds of the accent as you think you are. Taking JK Rowling's work as the best possible example of this, her attempts at writing a Cockney accent phonetically come across like someone is chewing a mouthful of cheese curds and struggling to contain them. There's no consistency, no proper understanding of how to transcribe syllables into writing in a way that coherently conveys the accent she's trying to portray. I mean this so seriously, but what the flying fuck is: 'Well, 'e 'ad these 'ead pains and 'e was def'nitley nervous. Depressed maybe.' It's a crime, is what it is.
it's just plain hard to read. Trying to wade through sentences full of apostrophes and elision, parsing what's actually being said, gets tiresome. It asks the reader to do work that you're actively making harder for them. And that's not always a bad thing! Making readers Put Some Fucking Effort In can be very fruitful! But do you really want them to be struggling to understand every single thing that your Character B is saying for 350 pages?
which leads me onto the last point, and the most important in my mind: writing out accents like this always, always affects accents that are already in some way Othered. They're either racialised or working class, or associated with certain local regions that have negative stereotypes - think the deep South of the US, or the Welsh Valleys. They're never the 'default'. And this raises thorny questions about what the default is, what the standardised accent is, the accents that do and do not merit differentiation from the norm. You're relegating Character B to being hard to read because he's from, idk, Sunderland. You've decided that he isn't speaking 'properly', and therefore the reader needs to understand that other people think he's speaking weirdly. That, to me, is the principle issue. Because returning to JK Rowling (a sentence I hoped never to type), the only characters who speak like this in her work are working class, or they're from other countries. They're never from, you know, Surrey. Wonder why that is. And it's easy to be glib about it, but I do think it reifies class and regional boundaries in a way that's ultimately harmful.
This isn't to say that there's never a place for eye dialect in writing - Trainspotting, for example, wouldn't be what it is without it, and there's definitely a different conversation to be had when it's your own accent and you're making a deliberate point about identity by differentiating through eye dialect - but I think that the blanket assumption of 'oh shit, my character is from Ireland, I'd better type that out phonetically!' can actually be both damaging to your writing and to your character representation, and I think that instead doing the work to really understand the vocabulary, speech patterns and unique aspects of a language or dialect always makes a work feel more authentic and lived-in.
To wit, less of this shite:
There’s mony a slip, an’ I’m no losin’ sight o’ any o’ my suspectit pairsons, juist yet awhile. (Peter Wimsey, if you were wondering, and yes, that's supposed to be Scottish)
and more of this:
"Are we straight so?"
"Aye, we're straight," said Jim.
"Straight as a rush, so we are." (Jamie O'Neill, Irish, from At Swim, Two Boys)
*objective determination made via a sample size of one: me, in an elaborate hat.
i've noticed that people don't leave the same kind of unhinged compliments under fanfics that visual artists usually receive (eg, "i want to eat your art"), so i've come up with a list that you need to start employing when your friends send you their WIPs and when your favorites update on ao3 but you're having a hard time commenting something that sounds intelligent and you still want to support them
"you're like if [famos author] (eg, Victor Hugo if the fic is angst) was into [fandom]"
"well THIS has been added to my pre-sleep daydream schedule"
"this fic invaded my mind and consumed my brain like a spore"
"I'M LOSING SLEEP OVER THIS ONE, FOLKS"
"yOu'Ve AlReAdY lEfT kUdOs HeRe"
"this fic has me scratching at my yellow wallpaper, it's so good"
"this fic has me checking under my floorboards for the heart of a kind man i murdered, it's so good"
"i'm making my parents read this"
"i know only one chapter is out so far, but i'm going to print this out, staple it together, and put it on my bookshelf next to the canon material"
"this fic gave me another mental illness"
(you can only do this one once) "i made an ao3 account specifically to bookmark this"
"i'm going to print this out so i can eat the words on the paper"
and a couple that are just nice (without the feral nature):
"i made a custom playlist to listen to while i read this fic"
"this fic reminds me of [song]"
"i really liked the part where [x], it really stuck with me"
"i really liked this line, [quote the line,] it was so well-written!"
artists: draw fanart of the fic!! it doesn't matter if you think your art skills are good and it doesnt matter if it's just a sketch!! let the author see it!!
make a moodboard!! for the fic!! let the author see it!!
It started as a joke. Danny is starting to think it may no longer be a joke.
So.
Vlad dragged Danny along to a Wayne Gala, and Danny got bored.
Danny also noticed that the Wayne Manor had like, a lot of weird statues.
So he uh. He possessed one of them. Sort of? He really just hid in it intangibly.
Then he started whispering shit in ghost speak to some of the rich fancy guests. Guests that sort of understood the general gist of what he was saying, but appeared to have a bit of a gap.
They asked him weird shit about like, the meaning of time and how could they be sure they had enough in a city like Gotham.
So he tried to convey that he wasn't Clockwork, but he thought they were probably doing okay.
They started leaving really tasty food bits in front of his statue.
So he answered some more questions.
Four hours into the Gala and there's a few people actually praying to him.
Six hours in and half the guests are ready to riot if Bruce Wayne suggests they go home one more time.
Eight hours in and Danny is nervously sweating as he stares through the statues eyes and into the whiteouts of a very angry Batman's cowl, the party goers are being forcibly prevented from sacrificing the Joker to him courtesy of Nightwing, Red Hood, Red Robin, and Robin (he'd mentioned at the beginning of this whole thing that he hated clowns and apparently the people had taken that to heart).
Gothamites too, hate clowns. They can FEEL a presence of some sort. Good enough for them! Not like any OTHER God will touch this place. So sure, might as well sign on with this one.
Throw in a bit of "Danny helps the Pit Rage" and you can up the stakes by making Red Hood one of the most devout to The Statue.
Also, what if the statue is one of those fancy ice sculptures rich people like to put up for parties. And Danny, by possessing it, accidentally made the ice part of his ghost ice, so now it isn't melting.
The sculpture is probably in some shape relevant to some charity Bruce is hosting the gala for. Could be an animal charity? Make Danny an elegant ice swan. Or a huge fuck off ice deer or lion. Or if not an animal, maybe something mythical? An angel, dragon, griffin, phoenix? Hmm, many options.
Even better? Highly stylized. Something with wings. Gotta be non-denominational and not attract any particular Supernatural elements, here in... you know, GOTHAM. No one wants an ACTUAL mythical beast showing up. And Go-... uuuuh, SOMEBODY, forbid, a biblical angel of any sort.
The whole city would probably burn.
No Thanks(tm)!
So since it's a faux pas to have anything be cute animals, objects, or "idea" pieces? Obviously Bruce looked up some up-n-comer, who's probably hyperventilating in the back over his work turned Possessed God Idol For A Cult IN GOTHAM, and had him make some piece representing "Hope".
Something both fitting for the charity AND appropriately "Brucie Mask: I am a very earnest himbo" -ish? Like "HOPE".
Which it definitely fits. Dude NAILED it. Absolutely hit it out of the park. Thing shone like diamonds and was made in such a way? That it would melt SUPER gracefully and shine beautifully the entire time. This was gonna be his ticket to the big leagues. Danny's gonna feel like shit.
(Bruce absolutely doesn't blame the sculpter. HE already passed his background check. Bruce is gonna hire him again AND recommend him to others. But Danny doesn't know that.)
So like? Imagine graceful swooping lines. "Wings". The COULD be swirls, COULD be tails or mane, it's up for interpretation. As intended. It arches up. Is it fighting to be free? Is it swirling freedom itself, about to take flight? Looking up to the heavens? Or peering, benevolently, down at you from the corner of its eye? Does it even HAVE eyes or is that just a trick of the light?
Yes.
And isn't it BEAUTIFUL. A+++ Job, ice sculpture dude!
But... uuuuuuh... it was? Less BLUE wasn't it? Or is that green? Some intangible blend of the two, instead of the softly frosted white he chose. It's also? NOT MELTED. It WAS. It's catching the light now, the way he designed. But it STOPPED. Everything ELSE melted?
And worse! It's... it's gotten COLDER? Without changing!!! Weird shit is BAD in Gotham! Colder without changing the temperature is BAD!
But now it's distinctly? "Purity of snow" somehow? Like childhoods and wonder and hope! What the actual FUCK!? It's RADIATING cold that seeps into... no, BYPASSES the skin. Feels like mint on your breath, the coming of winter against your face. The stillness and rest of SOMETHING they are all too familiar with, that the fight the hold off each and everyday.
They see angels in that statue.
Birds of legend and great beasts of lore.
Defiance and freedom, struggle. Compassion. And SOMETHING is speaking back. Answering prayers that other Gods ignored. No miracles, no shows of power. But in a world like theirs? A CITY like theirs? Should they be impressed by such things?
The Statue LISTENS. The Statue knows things beyond their mortal understanding, yet? Still cares to answer they worries and concerns. The Gods surely turned their back on Gotham. Everyone knows it. Yet? The Statue has come for them. Waded into the tar and muck, too try and pull them free.
The Statue despises (hates) The Clown (clowns). And? Of course! What more Wicked and Tainting force could you imagine, in Gotham, the The Joker? OBVIOUSLY The Statue wishes to set them free of Him. Too free EVERYONE of the fear and trauma he rains like poison.
But The Statue is weak! Oh no! We are THE FIRST! Chosen, probably! To witness their coming! Everyone knows that God's probably get stronger the more people worship them! They've seen movies! Read popular book series! The Statue can not Smite the Wicked, doesn't seem the type...
Luckily THEY can! Don't worry Statue! We'll protect Our New God!
LETS KILL THE JOKER FOR THEM!!!
And like... m-maaaaybe *sweats nervously under Direct Bat Glaring* if he just? Holds Very, VERY still? Batman won't notice him? Ha ha... W-We'll look back at this and laugh?
*softly and with panic* Vlad, Help!
Which like? You KNOW Vlad had found a comfortable lounging seat, from which to watch the little badger Dig Himself Deeper. Drink all of Brucie's good wine. Enjoy the show. God, he loves these parties. Always SOME sort of interesting shitshow.
But! That's his cue~
After all, as Danny's BELOVED and TRUSTED Father Figure(tm), he really can't just let the boy be capture by Bats. He did promise to return him too his mother.
So~ *silently and invisibly splits in two* *possesses a decorative suit of armor*
*Sets FIRE to the far side of the ballroom*
Oh nooooo. We're under attaaaack. Oh. His boy, his boy. Won't SOMEBODY help him find his godson? *smirks like an asshole*
The suit then becomes SUITS of armor, thanks to the Bats fighting back. Which? Gives Danny enough time and distraction to dip. Ha ha, YEP! Was in the crowd the WHOLE TIME!
But also, like.... don't take your eyes off Cultists, man. Religious fervor is no joke.
People get hurt, trying to protect The Statue. But that's only AFTER? At least a handful of people fuckin full on stab the Joker. He survives PURELY because they have no idea how to properly stab someone. With serious medical complications, sure, but? Eh. "Fuck that guy." Is Gotham Party Line.
(So? What have we Learned, little Badger?) (That Gothamites have no sense of humor and Batman scares me.)
But! You think?? Silly child. That A CULT will just? Stop?? After they PERSONALLY WITNESSED: 1) the arrival of their God. 2) the rare BENEVOLENCE and concern for them of said God. 3) A CLEAR and MALEVOLENT force, bent on the DESTRUCTION of the NICE God. ?
Ha! No, no. Clearly The Statue was just AN AVATAR of The Winter God. And-! *sprawling, conspiracy board style mythos built up from "context clues"*
Worst of ALL~♡ :D WHO? Attends Brucie Wayne's parties? WHO are these new Cultists?? Did you say Business Leaders, Heirs/Heiress's, Socialites, trophy partners who also in this day and age happen to be HOT INFLUENCERS, and union service staff? Because you should have!
You think certain IRL Science named Cults have star power? THEIR God never showed up to personally answers your questions about your marital concerns. They gad to trick people! Most cults do! THIS one? Just has to say "no, I was totally there, here's the snap chat timeline of the dude before me in line. God is really nice and the group is super supportive. We have brunch."
Good luck keeping THAT from taking over Gotham! A place that DESPERATELY needs something to hopeful believe in!
Danny? Has made the ROOKIE mistake all Supernatural Creatures know to avoid!
The Wayne gala was going well, no rogues hand attacked, Dick was not swinging from the chandelier, and Alfred had prepared those little sandwiches she liked. She was actually enjoying said sandwiches when she felt it.
Kronos.
While she had never personally met her grandfather, every member of his bloodline could identify his presence, or in this case his blessing.
Finding a blessed mortal was rare enough, but one blessed by Kronos was unheard of.
When Zeus had cut his father into pieces he had inadvertently split the Titan into separate aspects as well. The Mad Titan aspect of Kronos was safely sealed away in Tartarus while the Time God aspect had fled to the Infinite Realms. Both places no mortal could survive. So how was it that a mortal blessed by Kronos was walking around?
Diana had to find the blessed mortal, if only to ensure they were not a servant of the Mad Titan.
…
Diana could not believe what she was seeing.
She had only stepped out of the ballroom for a few moments to inform Bruce of the blessed mortal and figure out how to locate them.
Upon her return … well, she didn’t have to look for them anymore.
Why was the blessed mortal in an ice sculpture.
Why where the Gothamites worshipping it
Why was Joker beaten to a pulp and ritualistically splayed out on what used to be the desert table like an offering.
forget how fast this cult is going to take over gotham, it's 100% spreading to the rest of the world. amity park takes one look at the videos, recognizes their friendly neighborhood ghost, and declares the official town religion to be "Whatever That Is"
I also feel like Sam/Tucker would come out of the woodwork as the “original” devotees and make up a munch of stuff that people can do to devote themselves to the winter God
And of course they're going to consult with Danny about the stuff that they can do to devote themselves to the winter god, because with it they can both tease him, have the devotional stuff be things that wouldn't make him feel bad or go against him protection Obsession, like actual sacrifices instead of just food, and they also get to spread his religion further so that he gets the recognition that he deserves.
Plus, what if they become his "priests"? I can see the cult going 'they were the first ones to worship him and have been doing so for longer than anyone else? Obviously they deserve to have a higher rank in this religion than us', and BAM! Priests
I cant go to my local libary anymore because last year when I stopped by a librarian was reading a book I wrote under a pen name years ago. This book sold under 10k copies and I've literally only heard people talk about this book online *if* I went looking for it so I went up to them and tried to start a conversation like "oh hey I've heard of that book is it good?" Like hoping for some real feedback and she goes "yeah I love reading things by queer writers" and in a moment of terror I was like "oh but- hold on, I thought the author was some old hetero white guy?!" A thing I thought because I used my own dead grandpa's picture for the author pic because grandpa never had internet. I fake looked it up and was like "yeah if he was queer its not public?" And without looking up this absolute unit goes "oh the author bio is obviously fake. I'd bet my left leg the author is a west coast millennial non-binary queer who has never lived on the east coast." And then proceeded to rattle off a dozen linguistic flourishes that are specfic to the pacific northwest that are in the book and several that are nearly ubiquitous in the state where I said my pen name lives that are somehow completely absent from the book.
So you know. Got read for fifth and didn't even find out if she liked it.
