"Yeah, no shit." I had been patrolling (pacing) down ART's corridors for 2.3 hours now. I was actually surprised it took this long for it to say anything.
"Mild exercise and changing scenery can help alleviate restlessness," ART said, "however, given that you have been doing that for 2 hours and 19 minutes without improvement, I suggest another course of action."
"Like what?" I asked.
"Moderate to extreme exercise might give better results. You could make use of my gym. Or..." ART paused for almost 5 seconds, which meant it was either thinking really hard or it just did that for dramatic effect. My bet was on the second option.
"Or we could do some integration stress testing."
Or: ART and Murderbot do sex integration stress testing to help Murderbot relax. ART might have some ulterior motives.

Woohoo I can finally say that this was me! As soon as I saw the prompt I knew I had to get it, it felt like it was made specifically for me. And luckily I did! I had a lot of fun writing it, and the reception has been so nice too! I've been writing fanfic for most of my life, but this fandom's positivity has given me the courage to post it online for the first time. So, thank you to everyone in the tmbd fandom who is encouraging to newbies, who comments, likes, reblogs and gives kudos to fan works, who practices the great technique of 'don't like don't read', and who appreciates the incredible diversity in designs/interpretations/headcanons/etc

like I know it's partially because I am stuck in bed with nothing but my thoughts, but I fear many if not most Tumblr users would watch an hour long minstrel show and lynching if there was a compelling vaguely fem white man there.
"Kill your darlings" means "if something is holding you back, get rid of it, even if it sounds pretty."
That's it! That's all it means! It means if you're stuck and stalled out on your story and you could fix the whole block by removing something but you're avoiding removing that thing because it's good, you remove that thing. That's the darling.
It does NOT mean
That you have to get rid of your self-indulgent writing
That you should delete something just because you like it (?wtf?)
That you need to kill off characters (??? what)
That you have to pare your story down to the absolute bare bones
That you have to delete anything whatsoever if you don't want to
The POINT is that you STOP FEELING GUILTY for throwing out good writing that isn't SERVING THE STORY.
The POINT is that you don't get so HUNG UP on the details that you lose sight of the BIG PICTURE.
Your dialogue is stiff because everyone is being too honest
Great dialogue can come from radical emotional honesty. But in most real conversations, people
dodge questions
answer indirectly
lie (badly)
change the subject
crack jokes to avoid serious answers
lie (convincingly)
say half of what they mean
tell the truth but get so anxious/angry/defensive others now think they're lying
If your dialogue feels unnatural, it might be because everyone is saying exactly what they think, or articulating their thoughts too well. Try letting characters hide things instead.
i was thinking about this and i think one thing that's missing here that i use a lot is "A tells the truth; B misunderstands" & corollary "B responds to what they understood A to mean and not to what A actually said"
you can obviously expand this in a number of directions (see the last item on the list! A&B both genuinely trying to be honest but hampered by misinterpretation of tone or assumptions caused by other past baggage)
but you can also combine misunderstandings with stuff in the op as well... A cracks a joke that's half true & B assumes it's ALL true but flippant, and gets upset at the flippancy or misunderstands what's being communicated altogether. A tries to express what they mean but doesn't have the words to describe it, and their metaphor falls flat for B. etc etc etc.
not misunderstanding as plot contrivance but misunderstanding as a fundamental part of human communication.
