I hate seeing computer based misinformation because I get compelled to correct them even though I KNOW no ones going to actually read and acknowledge my point. ms word was never free, you shouldn't be disabling random windows components in the hope it'll make your computer better (I promise windows isn't using the search service for evil. that's how you find your data later!) and not all data centers are bad! tbh most data centers are basically vital infrastructure these days, you should default to "cool data center" as long as corners aren't being cut and they're not being fast tracked through approval at all levels.

No subscription. Just program.

On your computer. You got to use it forever and ever and never had to worry about it going away.

Because it was physically on your computer. As a program. That you actually owned. Not because you got it separately, but because it was a standard inclusion with your computer.

you're thinking about WordPad, which was kind of the middle ground between notepad and word. it could do rich text editing but was missing words more advanced features. Office for windows 95 was 500 USD ( 249 for the upgrade) as per this CNET article. if you've ever had a full version of ms word or any other mainline office app pre-installed on a computer that's because the license was part of the computers price, not because it was free.

your core point (that it's insane that one of the biggest operating systems in the world doesn't ship with rich text editing software anymore) is true, but that's because WordPad literally doesn't exist anymore. if you send someone on a Windows machine an .rtf file they literally won't have software to view it without having downloaded it at themselves and that's fucked
