2. ✸Warm - 205k - “I don’t want Sirius to die – that would be too quick. And public humiliation is thinking too small.” He began, looking around at the intrigued faces of his friends.

“What I want is to hurt him. As much as he hurt me.” Regulus said, a cacophony of painful emotion swirling in his gut. “Physical pain is too easy. I want to hit him where it hurts the most.”

“And where would that be?” Pandora asked.

Regulus forced his turmoil down and focused on the ice settling in his bones.

“What’s the most important thing in his life?”

Regulus watched as comprehension dawned on their faces.

“His friends.” Emmeline whispered, anticipation shining in her eyes.

“How awful it would be, then, if I stole them.”

His words hung in the air for a few moments.

“Oh, this is going to be so much fun.” Barty cackled as sly smirks crept onto each of their faces.

3. ✸Yes, Professor - 179k - James Potter wasn't surprised to get the owl he was needed in the Headmistress' office after his son was caught in the middle of yet another prank. What he wasn't expecting was to be so caught off guard by the Professor who had caught Harry this time around. The last time he had seen Regulus Black was years ago, and now here he was immaculately dressed, scowl on his face and James couldn't stop staring.

Why hadn't he seen Regulus in years? Regulus has spent the last five years avoiding James Potter because he couldn't take suffering through his childhood crush a second later. Now all of that was for nothing, because James Potter was standing across from him, smirking at him from behind those glasses of his, calling Regulus 'Professor Black' and setting Regulus' skin on fire.

4. ✸The Sun & Wayward Stars - 137k - “I’m afraid that’s your choice to make,” Peter said solemnly. “If you want Sirius back, James comes along with him. The two of them are inseparable.”

Regulus’s eyes locked onto Peter’s, “You believe that, don’t you? That they’re inseparable.”

“Only because it’s true,” Peter agreed, shrugging lightly. “It’s not fair to expect Sirius to choose between you, Regulus. James was there for him during some really tough times. He pulled him out of depressions and tantrums repeatedly, despite his protests. He can reach Sirius when no one else can. Do you really want to take that away from your brother?”

“Yes,” Regulus answered petulantly.

Peter snorted a laugh, “Piss off, Regulus. Now who’s a prat?”

“Still Potter.”

5. ✸Only the brave - 645k - Regulus Black is angry. He wants revenge. He wants to watch the world burn for all it's done to him. He also wants to make out with James Potter, but that's a secret he'll take to the grave. Vengeance is more important than... whatever it is that chokes him when he lays eyes on Potter.

James Potter is confused, because Regulus Black is, all of a sudden, hot. And it's unfair because Sirius is going to kill him if he doesn't get his impulse control in line.

7. ✸King of my heart - 40k - Regulus and James have been hooking up for a couple of months but no one knows - and both are steadily fighting off the feelings that are inevitably looming. James falls first, Regulus falls harder.

8. ✸that's what you do, baby - 47k - “Whatever, Rosier. Believe what you want. I couldn’t care less about Potter.” Regulus spat.

“Good. Don’t waste your time. You know as well as I do that The James Potter doesn’t date anyone. He's gorgeous, obviously, but apparently no one here is good enough for him,” Evan scoffed. “Seven years at Hogwarts and the star quidditch player hasn’t found anyone worthy of his presence.” _____

In which Regulus has had a crush on one James Fleamont Potter since he was eleven years old, and James is a lovable, oblivious idiot who platonically kisses people when he's happy/excited. James kisses Regulus in a moment of excitement, chaos and pining ensues.

9. ✸Deep blue waters - 104k -

Where Regulus is sorted into Ravenclaw, and everything changes. Or do some things stay the same? --- "Oh, I'm not letting that happen," James said determinedly. "You're friends with us whether your family likes it or not. Got it?"

Regulus let out a nervous laugh. "Understood," he replied. "What about if…"

"Alright. No. You need a distraction," James interrupted him, and Regulus was about to argue when James got up and grabbed him by his wrists. James doesn’t need to drag me anywhere; I’d follow James willingly. Not that he would ever tell James that or admit it to anyone. --- Basically in which James falls for Regulus first, but Regulus falls harder.

10. ✸grim omens in starlit skies - 346k - Less than a week into the new school year, a loud knock disrupts the quiet of the fourth-year Slytherin boys' dormitory. The last person Regulus expects to find on the other side of the door is his (somewhat) estranged older brother, Sirius, his handsome face bloodied and bruised.

Even more shocking than Sirius's sudden appearance, is his request - if they'd be so kind, could he bunk with them in Slytherin 'for a bit'?

His brother's refusal to explain his abscondence from Gryffindor is irksome, but Regulus lets him in regardless, confident he'll unravel the mystery in due time. After all, Sirius has never been very good at keeping secrets from his younger sibling, and Regulus can be *very* persuasive when he wants to know something.

Unbeknownst to the Black brothers, however, their choices in that moment set off a chaotic chain of events that will have lasting repercussions for The Noble and Most Ancient House of Black, and change the trajectory of their lives for good.

11. ✸Of pinstripes and potions - 52k -

When James wakes up, his head is pounding. He can’t remember drinking anything, but supposes he must have because it feels like he’s been hit square between the eyes with a bludger. He’s never been one to get hungover, but he knows this is what it’s supposed to feel like. Although, come to think of it, he doesn’t remember celebrating their victory on the pitch, isn’t completely sure they had one at all. The last thing he remembers is turning to look to the stands, revelling in the roars of his fellow Gryffindors, certain that they were going to beat Hufflepuff. Then, he turned and… was hit square between the eyes with a bludger.

Now he’s stuck in the hospital wing, and the bed next to his is occupied by none other than Regulus Black.

12. ✸The scent in our clothes - 157k - “Do you swear it?” Regulus looks deep into James’ eyes, waiting for the faltering, but there is none. “I swear it,” he says, gripping Regulus’ arm tighter. There’s a moment of silence, and then it is James who twists their arms, locking the charm in place. Not that either of them will remember it the following day, drunk as they are.

James and Regulus get really drunk and make an unbreakable vow. James swears that Regulus will be in love with him by the end of the year, and Regulus swears not to push him away and make him try. When they wake up the following day, they remember nothing of it. But everyone knows what happens if you don’t go through with it, so they can do nothing but try to recall and respect their drunken promises or be met by sweet old death. As if this wasn’t enough, their everyday problems seem to double by the minute. Between the vow and life as a student,

It’s about to be a hell of a year.

Regulus has it all under control. Really, he does. And anyone that says otherwise is just plain wrong.

He knows what he and James are doing. It's fun and easy and, most importantly, casual. He can put an end to it whenever he wishes to, because the power is all his. The ball is in his court, and all that bullshit.

So what if the longer he spends with James the more of his rules that end up broken?

There's nothing to worry about. Nothing at all.

14. ✸The brightest star - 200k -

And oh.

Oh.

Oh he was kind of beautiful wasn’t he? Had Regulus always been?

To anyone else, he was all sharp edges and scathing remarks, but not to James. He could never be just that to James.

He could never just…be, to James.

Trilogy of Marauders era/Hogwarts AU + after school (1975-1982), focused fully on James and Regulus POVs. Canon-divergent (adjacent if you squint), but the path to defeating Voldemort lies not in the prophecy but in Regulus' hands.

"Yeah. It's actually bloody brilliant, if you think about it. Everyone will leave happy. I'm going to fake date my way into falling in love," James announces grandly, sticking his hand out and waving it through the air like he's presenting a banner.

Or, the one in which James Potter wants to prove he'd be a good boyfriend to Lily Evans and comes up with the brilliant plan to fake date Regulus Black his way into falling in love. It doesn't quite go as anyone expects.

19. ✸Runaway Spare - 451k - Later, when Regulus was safer, healthier, no longer actively bleeding, Regulus would accept that Sirius hadn’t meant to. He was naïve and careless with Regulus’ safety in a way Regulus had never been with his, but it wasn’t malice that led Sirius to make his mother question. When Sirius had spit those hateful things at Regulus he hadn’t known that his mother could overhear. He hadn’t known that his words, which were meant to hurt only his feelings, would cause this. But they did.

A slip of the tongue leads Regulus, Sirius, and their friends down a different path. This fic deals with themes of surviving an abusive household, a realistic progression of healing/ rebuilding relationships, and navigating new relationships in the context of trauma. Sometimes people's action impact us even when they don't mean to and just because someone doesn't mean you harm doesn't mean you walk away unscathed.

This fic runs from the middle of Regulus' 5th year through to the War.

20. ✸When you love these broken bones, can you feel them mend? - 41k - Regulus Black’s life is not exciting; if anything, it’s mundane, no break from the routine he found himself in after leaving his childhood home, following in his big brother’s footsteps. It might have taken him four more years than Sirius to gather himself and leave their parents behind, but now, at twenty-three, Regulus is the happiest he’s ever been. Well, he’s as happy as he can be, considering his life is bleak and his only form of entertainment comes from his and Sirius’ bi-weekly dinners.

He never would have expected said monotony to be broken by Sirius’ best friend, yet here he is.

(or, James Potter walks into Regulus' class, toddler strapped to his chest and looking like he's in dire need of a nap and Regulus' world gets thrown off its axis.)

When their paths unexpectedly collided, Regulus felt that his life would never be the same again.

The second rule is: Don't be James Potter. Because his hands are cursed - flowers die under his supervision or so he thinks. That brings him to the door of his moody neighbour who doesn't seem to like him very much: Regulus.

“Not everything is about winning, Reggie,” Sirius sighs. “It’s Formula One, of course, it’s all about winning. What else is there to live for?” Regulus replies.

Or, James and Regulus are teammates for Formula One team Andretti and Remus and Sirius are teammates for Formula One team Black-Hill. They battle for the championship and have to navigate their feelings, all while living in the spotlight.

24. ✸put us on ice - 67k - Regulus leans carefully into the boards between them, his own dark curls brushing James’ forehead briefly. “Not interested in hockey.”

“Maybe not,” James muses. He slides both hands up Regulus’ forearms to his elbows then down again, settling over the back of his cold hands and warming them. “You are interested in me, though.”

And, well. Regulus doesn’t have a solid enough denial for that. Not anymore. No matter how much he may like one.

Tanned skin and broad shoulders, a brilliant smile paired with infallible kindness.

James stares at his best friend in disbelief, because what?

“Look, if you go on a date with Regulus, I can go out on my Moony date. My parents will realise that their stupid idea of cursing me with only getting to date once Regulus does didn’t work out because look at that, Regulus also dates! They reverse the magic, Regulus can happily go back to refusing to date anyone, I can go back happily dating Remus, and you can happily go back doing whatever you had planned to do this summer. Quidditch, I assume.”

“Reggie, listen. Your new movie is so highly anticipated that having The Marauders write a song specifically for it? Everyone will go wild.”

“I don’t care. I don’t want it.”

“Well, it’s not actually up to you. I’m only telling you as a nicety. The Marauders have already agreed.”

or, Regulus is the highest-paid actor of his generation, and when his brother's band agrees to write a song for his film, the brothers are forced to speak to each other again after seven years.

29. ✸pink lemonade - 121k - If you had told James Potter 2 weeks ago that he would be touring with Regulus Black, he would’ve admitted you to a mental hospital and then driven himself off a bridge. If you had told Regulus Black the same thing, he would’ve slapped you across the face.

As the Black brothers unexpectedly reunite after ten years apart, James and Regulus are forced to spend time together and James starts to think that maybe rules are meant to be broken. It's the festive season, and Sirius and Regulus are struggling to keep their failing bakery afloat.

Enter James Potter, a Christmas enthusiast and Regulus's first crush, and his best friend Remus Lupin, an introverted novelist who turns to Sirius for inspiration for his next romance book.

I really just miss the simplicity of s1 I think. I miss when Hawkins really did feel like a close-knit town, I miss when characters weren't all over the place, and there was just some type of grain in the film, even if it was filmed in 2015. I also miss the character building. Jim was a divorced alcoholic. Jonathan was a 'creep' and had a rough upbringing. Nancy was your typical popular, pretty schoolgirl, but she was in love with the so-called creep and could handle a gun. And Joyce was just a single mother, being driven to the brink of insanity. I just feel like nowadays, there's no time for character development, or no thought put behind it at all.

I really miss when stranger things did feel like an eighties, small town, cop sci-fi thriller with horror elements. Now it just feels like a long, drawn out season of some shitty marvel cash grab show.

“Ooh, 11:11, make a wish!” James exclaimed excitedly, glancing at Regulus before he closed his eyes, appearing to make his wish. When he opened them, he looked at Regulus expectantly.

“I don’t make wishes.” The younger man told him, glancing at the lingering 11:11, willing it to change to 12. He was distracted, however, when James let out a dramatic gasp.

“You don’t?? You mean, you just ignore all those signs?” He asked, gaping at Regulus.

“Yes.” Regulus replied flatly, blinking at the still-astounded man.

“What about on dandelions?”

“Nope.”

“Not even birthday candles?”

Regulus snorted.

“Definitely not.”

“Eyelashes?”

“Okay— shooting stars?”

“Ha, no.”

“What?! You’re literally named after a star!!” James cried, throwing his hands in the air. After a moment of silence, finally he sighed, defeated.

“Listen, wishes just don’t work for me, okay?” Regulus explained, trying to drop the topic and move on.

“So… you’ve tried in the past?” James pushed, hopeful. Regulus sighed.

“Yes. But they’re useless. They’re just little shreds of hope we grab onto even though they don’t do anything.” Regulus stated bitterly, deflating slightly when he met James’s dejected face. “Sorry.”

“No, you’re fine, just… don’t you want to have hope?” He asked softly, his thick brows furrowed.

It was Regulus’s turn to get quiet.

“Growing up the way I did, it was kind of hard to maintain hope, when every day it would be taken right out of me. When the people who are supposed to give you hope take it away… it’s hard to get it back.”

At this, James’s eyes softened, features saddening greatly.

“Oh, Reg…”

“No, it’s okay.” Regulus assured him, a small smile on his face. “Really, I’m okay now. Just… still not a wisher.” For a moment, James just looked at him, gaze gentle but appraising. Then, he scooted close, wrapping an arm around Regulus and pulling him close.

“Then I’ll just wish twice every time, one for you and one for me.” He said softly, squeezing Regulus’s shoulder.

“Sounds good.” Regulus replied, a warm smile gracing his face as he leaned further into James’s chest, looking out at the water.

Maybe wishes weren’t so bad.
