Hot take though
my wife worked on an oil rig in Wyoming out of high school because there aren’t a lot of jobs that pay that well for someone without access to college. She was a driller and then a supervisor after the crew supervisor was killed during their shift. She saw multiple people die and loose limbs and she got pretty bad ptsd from watching a friend get decapitated by a chain that went loose and catching his head in her hands.
Shifts are often 20+ hours at a time with an 8-10 hour break between shifts for at least two weeks at a time and then a week off. Rigs are normally understaffed which make it worse and a lot of people on rigs turn to drug use just to be able to stay awake during their shifts. But it’s a job that pays a lot in rural and low income communities for people who don’t have a lot of options. A lot of people go in knowing they’ll maybe die but at least their families won’t have to work afterwards because of life insurance policies from the companies they work for.
I know this post was probably just meant as a joke post the whole thing with Joe Biden and fracking but like sometimes it shows that people who post these things don’t know a ton about what they’re talking about. It remains one of the most lethal jobs worldwide. Switching from oil/natural gas to sustainable energy sources will take time to transition and right now we have millions working in drilling with odds stacked against them. Republicans don’t care about oil workers’ lives because they can be used to make a profit and the left hates them because of a career they didn’t have a lot of choice in choosing.
The oil field is like the military where largely low income and marginalized individuals get preyed upon by an organization that doesn’t care if they live or die. Fracking and drilling being bad for the planet and needing an end and oil workers being worthy of concern because their lives are treated as disposable are two ideas that can coexist.
class solidarity must extend to ALL workers, not just workers of sectors you approve of.
Thank you, if I may add to this. I'm originally from NE Montana and the Bakken is very much a part of life for us and our neighbors in ND and something to remember is these people are working in below zero weather through much of the winter with windchill regularly reaching -40 F. The oils rigs in these conditions become incredibly slick and as you might imagine workers hands become incredibly numb making lethal errors incredibly easy, not to mention they are housed in paper thin trailer houses in one of the coldest places jn the nation. That entire region is facing impending economic extinction both in the oilfield and agriculture where farms are going bankrupt right and left. Studies have shown rural education to be as poor as inner city education and quite frankly these people don't have much more hope than the poor folks who were in the auto industry or the miners in Appalachia. It's honestly depressing the way they worship their oppressors because they believe if they work their asses off they'll get a fair shake.

Who should your Patron Saint be?
Saint Cecilia
Saint Cecilia is the patroness of musicians, hymns, poems, and pipe organs. Crowned in roses and lilies, she gives meaning both to the music of the ear and the song a person sings in their heart. Everybody has one, but if Saint Cecilia calls to you then perhaps yours is especially loud. Her song brings truth, faith, and protection. She died a martyr and legend has it, after being struck thrice in the neck with a sword, she lived for three days. For those who call to her, she acts as the angel does in her story, invisible to most but brings protection and security all the same. There is so much inside of you that is beautiful, it is just a matter of finding the voice and volume to get it out.
Saints Justa and Rufina
Saint Justa and her sister Saint Rufina are sister martyrs and the patron saints of guilds of craftsmen, potters, and the city of Seville. They magnify the voices of those with something to say and hills to die on. After imprisonment with no food or water, Justa passed on and her body was thrown down a well. Her sister Rufina was thrown to the lions, but they were as docile as house cats at her feet and ultimately she was beheaded. The sisters Justa and Rufina bring strength in acts of open defiance and righteousness to anger. You will no longer have to choke back your words if you spit them out, and come what may as a result, if nothing else they will be yours and yours alone.
Saint Jeanne d'Arc
Saint Jeanne d’arc, more commonly known as Joan of Arc and occasionally the Maid of Orleans, is the patron saint of martyrs, prisoners, soldiers, and of course France. The story of the peasant girl who fought to turn the tide of a seemingly endless war, was subsequently abandoned by those she fought for to die by fire and nonetheless stood resolute is infamous. She brings many comforts, but above all she brings an unwavering resound to know your truth through knowing yourself. Legend has it Jeanne had a childhood fear of fire. She does not bring fearlessness, but rather the knowledge of what it is inside of you that is bigger than your fear. There is a truth inside you, and the light of it will not go out.
Saint Pantaleon
Saint Pantaleon is the patron saint of physicians, midwives, lottery winners and victories, and a comforter of crying children. He is a bringer of healing, both for those who perform the act on others and desire it for themselves. Known as the ‘all-compassionate’, he asked forgiveness for his executioners after they tried, and failed, to kill him by immolation, boiling in lead, drowning, mauling by wild beasts, and torture wheel, unbtil he was ultimately beheaded. Ultimately, Saint Pantaleon aids those whom kindness is a driving force and those in need of aid to lay down the arms of anger. Do not mistake compassion and forgiveness for pacivity. You can tuck your anger into bed, let it rest a while, and walk away knowing it was just as much about forgiveness as easing the weight of the burden you carry.
Wow. Eerie.
Little girl teaching her cats how to draw a flower
(via)
they’re? just? sitting there ???
it makes it 100% better that i can’t understand her, i feel like i’m hearing what cats hear
Heh, she’s speaking Portuguese! Here’s what she’s saying:
*baby voice* “… and if you have any questions, just ask me! And now… yeah. And now you draw the roots. You draw them all twisted up! Got it? A flower? Now draw it. Did you get it, Luis Roberto? Did you get it, Jurandir? Look. Did you get it? That’s how you draw a flower.”
Luis Roberto and Jurandir are people names (Jurandir is especially a name associated with older men) so it’s extra funny that the cats are named that, heh.
I am happy now 😊
Please remember that almost everyone around you is traumatized. I didn’t understand this when I was younger. I wondered why people acted so strangely and irrationally. Maybe all children wonder this. The author Robert Anton Wilson said (paraphrasing), “We have never seen a completely sane adult human.” No one makes it out of this life alive. It’s not their fault. Mercy, kindness, forgiving — these are what makes one human. They are other names for love. People break in the strangest of ways.
“Under the present brutal and primitive conditions on this planet, every person you meet should be regarded as one of the walking wounded. we have never seen a man or woman not slightly deranged by either anxiety or grief. we have never seen a totally sane human being." — Robert Anton Wilson

What Native people say about the use of sage: you can use sage, but you cannot smudge as nothing you are doing (waving sage around) is actually smudging. Smudging is a ceremony and you are, we promise, not smudging. Please buy sage from either us, or someone who sources the sage from us. White sage may not be considered endangered by the US government but corperate sourcing is making it difficult for us to source sage for our own religious purposes. Let alone to sell it.
What white people hear: never use sage ever, don’t ever buy it, don’t own it, don’t even look at it.
Look, y’all. There’s a couple of facets to my talk today.
1) Yes! You can buy sage! You really, truly can! Buy it from either native sellers (go to a powwow! Eat our food, buy our stuff, watch some dancing!) Or buy it from a seller who sources the sage from native people. Pick one. And no, buying it from 5 Below doesn’t count.
2) you CANNOT smudge. This isn’t just you “shouldn’t”— this is a YOU ARE INCAPABLE OF SMUDGING. Waving a sage stick around your doorways IS NOT SMUDGING. It is smoke clensing. Smudging, depending on the tradition and tribe, could easily have dancing and drums involved. You, as a white person, do not have the cultural BACKGROUND to even know how it works. At all. Period.
3) please, for FUCKS SAKE, stop making posts here on tumblr where you tell other white people about cultural appropriation and what they can and cannot do. Please stop, your license has been revoked because none of you bother to get the facts right. We native people are FULLY CAPABLE OF DOING IT OURSELVES. Consider instead: a) reblogging our posts where we talk about it! We’re here! We have made posts!! b) Making a post that states what we said and then LINKS BACK TO US. Screenshot with a link if you must. Stop centering your own voices in these conversations. You are already centered in everything, stop centering yourselves in a native space.
I’m tired of this nonsense, y’all.
Thanks for coming to my TedTalk ™
I’m not arguing or anything, I’m just a little confused, but- can you explain to me why white people are incapable of smudging? My family is all white but we’ve used sage for smudging as far back as I can remember- but I always thought that was a pagan thing, so now I’m confused. Again, I’m not trying to argue- I’m just confused because I thought this was a paganism thing, not a culture thing.
Smudging is not the same thing as smoke cleansing.
Smudging is a sacred ritual with far more detail to it, and is a thing done exclusively by native people who often have been trained to do so. Many people I know have been exclusively trained by elders on how to do it. (For reference, I really don’t even know how, and I am a native person who has watched it been done many times.)
Non-native people cannot smudge because they don’t even usually know what smudging IS, let alone how to do it. They don’t have the needed cultural background to know.
It’s like asking if a non-Christian can meaningfully bless a mass with a thurible. (AKA a censer, one of these:)
They’re used in Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican, and some Lutheran services, usually by a priest or minister.
So, could someone who is not Christian lead a mass? Give a blessing? Perhaps most similar to why white people want a smudging, perform an exorcism?
Or would that be just meaningless playacting? If you believe in any of the spiritual backing to these belief systems, yes. It would. And playacting at the rituals of a culture the oppression of whom your (very recent!) ancestors directly benefitted from IS DEEPLY AND OBVIOUSLY DISRESPECTFUL.
So, fellow white people: don’t pretend you can smudge.
